Requested by James Williams.
Yes, this ST movie is usually scorned by fans and movie buffs. But it was a request. Plus I thought this video would be a good example of what happens when a Star Trek movie from back in the day does NOT use ILM for special effects =D
I'm not saying all movies need to use ILM. There are plenty of movies who didn't and their special effects still hold up. But when it comes to these Star Trek movies, ILM was a must!

Chekov demonstrates his superior tactical effectiveness in comparison to Kirk. Soon as a threat was becoming too great to ignore, he ordered the shields up and requested the shuttle go somewhere safe. Even as the situation worsened, Chekov still managed to protect the Enterprise from harm.

Yep, I love this scene, love Chekov's "Warp speed now" and the near miss. This, Sulu's "Target that explosion and fire" from VI and "Fire Everything"......"We are picking up another ship" with Chekov (again) shooting down the incoming missiles. These scenes are what I love about the ST movies.

William Shatner was doing the directing of this film. He slashing the budget to the bear minimum. ILM prices were to high and left when Mr Shatner would not pay the price. When the the film got released it did poorly and Mr. Shatner director license was taken away.
@SupermanKalL
@SupermanKalL 2 года назад
I'll never understand why STV had to end up with horrible effects. I mean the producers and Shatner kept saying ILM only offered their "B team" to work on it. Because their "A team" was on Indy Last Crusade, Ghostbusters 2 and Back to the Future 2 at the time. Which to me would've been better than what the film ended up with. Also couldn't they still have used the effects crew on the Next Gen series? Even ILM's TV divisions special effects would've been better than the final version on screen. Why that was never thought of I'll never understand. I mean they used the Next Gens studio sets anyways for the Enterprise interiors the next 2 films, albeit dressed up changes. So that was a sign of sourcing what they had. Other than the fact also the films budget had gone too high and the special effects got a hammering from what I understand for its budget. Shatner spent too much money on the film halfway into production hampering the movies budget going higher at just over $30+ mil, most ever since the Motion Picture, which was around $47 mil.

The Final Frontier has a ton of flaws but it also has some bright spots too. Laurence Luckinbill was fantastic as Sybok. He’s a powerful actor. Also, DeForest Kelly gives one of his best performances ever. It’s the scene where McCoy has to say goodbye to his dying father. That scene gets me every time. The actor who plays the young Klingon captain isn’t bad either.

Star Trek V, in addition to the scene with McCoy's father, also has Kirk's line about his need for his pain, McCoy's line about doubting any god who would inflict pain for his own pleasure, and the delight of the Kirk-Sock-McCoy trio around the camp-fire-and two great performances of the theme music. It's the first Star Trek movie I ever saw, on VHS in a hotel room in 1990, when I was ten; for years, it was my favorite Star Trek movie, for reasons that aren't very good. I now see the many ways in which it falls short-but it still has those strengths. Besides, without it, we wouldn't have this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HU2ftCitvyQ.html

Yeah it's pretty horrible for a few reasons...chief among them of course is Bill Shatner's acting. But yes, it does have some redeemable scenes. This was very well done except the crash in the bay of the _Enterprise_ was kinda of exaggerated. Naval pilots would have been trapping on carriers for centuries. And on nighttime icey conditions with zero visibility and a deck pitching 2 or 3 metres. Sulu would have been trained and retrained for an arrested landing.

Well someone has to stick up for this movie, which I think is the best 'Star Trek' film. Every character is fully engaged with the plot, every joke perfectly timed, the music is beautiful, cinematography and dare I say it - Shatner's direction - lend themselves to a classic Trek connundrum that slips in a few doses of moral philosophy. The other movies are great in and of themselves - but this one gets the formula just right. Of course there are a handful of dodgy effects shots but nothing that spoils the show - and could be easily edited out. On the whole the effects are more than good enough to serve the story - Enterprise looks more like a big ship than ILM's little model in Star Trek VI. But let's not mention that! Despite all the budget cuts thrown at him, Shatner tried admirably to scale everything up dramatically, which gives it a grandeur more in common with the first film. They go very well together - the Motion Picture shows how a tight crew can split up and move on, only to find they're much better together - and that's ultimately more rewarding than individual accomplishments in life. Star Trek V completes that arc to find Kirk, Bones & Spock admitting they're family. Considering what passes for entertainment these days - and especially what we're supposed to believe is the new Trek - it's long overdue we give Star Trek V it's proper place in the Pantheon.

I don't think it's the best Star Trek film, it's one of the weaker entries for sure, but for the most part I think Shatner did an okay job with it. I agree with your comments about the humor, the Jerry Goldsmith score, and the performances. All were good which leads me to believe the only reason it's so reviled is that the plot isn't motivated by the Enterprise crew, it's a side character's story, and the effects work was underwhelming. Those are the only real problems with the film.

It has its good moments, and this is one of them, it's the one scene I remembered the most from when I first saw it on VHS almost 30 years ago until I saw it on full HD last year.

They didn't even credit ILM for the scene from Star Trek IV they did use. And they totally messed up the Enterprise model when they gave it back to ILM. They ended up having to completely redo the fiber optic lighting because the cable had been sawed through. Sadly, Paramount still hasn't learned the lesson about being cheap.

To be fair, wasn’t ILM’s A and B Team both already reserved for use on some of the other big blockbusters in 1989? I want to say Ghoatbusters 2 was one. Indiana Jones the other? But yeah, Paramount are the ultimate cheap fucks. Always have been. Even if they couldn’t get ILM they could’ve found someone better than their rock-bottom-dollar, in over their heads choice.

Everyone forgets this moment shows just how in sync the main cast (and bridge crew) was. It’s not plot armor, it’s the the Enterprise and her crew working perfectly together. All the cast insisted on big fat raises to do ST5. Shatner got $6 million to direct. Nimoy made another $6 million because he got paid that much to direct ST 3&4. Kelley, Doohan and every other known character in the series got up into the millions salarywise, which added up to $32 million in cast salaries alone. That left about $8 million to make the rest of the movie. ILM was tied up with THE ABYSS, GHOSTBUSTERS II, INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE and only had time to do 3 composite shots on ST5. Paramount hired Bran Ferran (ALTERED STATES) to do the film, and they subcontracted the miniature work out to another company, that wasn’t up to the job. Paramount could have gone to some more established places like Dykstra’s Apogee, but were tight with the purse strings. I always thought they should have tried someone like Derek Meddings or another U.K. effects house.

This isn’t actually a bad scene. I like the tension, the music, and overall scenario. Why couldn’t they have just done a pure ‘high Jack the Enterprise for nefarious purpose’ story. Why did it have to be such a convoluted and nonsensical pseudo-mystical Shatner ego trip? There was potential with this to make it a pure action/adventure, especially coming out of the vibe of the Voyage Home.

After seeing some of the deleted scenes and reading about what Shatner was originally attempting (before the writer's strike and possible on set sabotage), I can see where he was trying to go and the potential that this film had. In the end, Shatner's $5-6 million effects budget request was cut down to $4 million and would not include ILM.

In this scene there are actually some nice looking shots. The two that look terrible is the first "on approach" shot to the E where its small in the frame. It lookks like the miniature they used back in TOS during The Doomsday Machine. Not entirely convincing. The other one that really bugs me is the Enterprise jumping to warp. My GOD everything about that shot is just awful. Anything would have been better. Reuse the shot from the end of Star Trek IV if you have to, but that shot just makes the Enterprise look like a cartoon. I can literally hear Road Runner going "MEEP MEEP!"

An embarrassing entry in the TOS universe, but man, Goldsmith's score was stinking amazing. I will say this film plays a *lot* better on TV than it ever did in the theater. And the horrendous SFX didn't help, neither did the cartoonish replacement for Shatner's infamous rock monster. What a mess. Agree with others, however, on the quality of Deforest Kelley's performance.

If I'm not mimstaken, ILM offered the models of the ships to Bran Ferren...but yeah, watching the Enterprise go slightly sideways as it lurches into warp was really bad.
@cubdukat
@cubdukat 5 лет назад
They did, and they got them back in worse condition. Ferren ended up ruining the fiber-optic lighting system by cutting the cable so that they could mount it easier. That might explain why there were very few motion-control shots; most of the visual effects were actually achieved on an animation stand. ILM had to all but rebuild the model before they could use it for ST6.
