Star8 Solar Electric Jeepney and Tricycle Philippines

Solar powered Jeepneys and Tricycles inline with the LTFRB PUV modernization program, from Star8.
These fully electric vehicles all include solar panels on top, which help to extend the range and generally be more environmentally friendly.
With a range of 120KM (75 miles), they've got more than enough energy in them to keep even the busiest public utility vehicle going for the day.
Unlike some other large electric vehicles, the star8 vehicles include an onboard smart charger and don't require any special charging station. That means the vehicle can be charged from a regular wall socket at the home of the driver.
The solar panels on top of the vehicles will extend the range but in most circumstances, a regularly used vehicle will still need to be charged from the grid.
The cost of recharging from the wall is estimated at around 80 PHP (1.50 USD, 1.20 GBP) which is much cheaper than buying diesel or unleaded gasoline.
Being all electric, you also avoid the expensive oil changes that are required fairly often on a vehicle that spends so much time on the road.
Another part of the public utility vehicle modernization program from LTFRB is to provide the drivers with a set wage instead of them earning per passenger. This should improve the ride quality since the driver doesn't need to battle or feel threatened by other people "stealing" his passengers. He's guaranteed a set wage regardless of how many people he carries.
According to someone who attended a Star8 Solar Jeepney seminar in April 2017, you need to pay P150,000 for the franchise and transportation cooperative group. For the first 5 years, the unit maintnecen and parts have to be done through Star8. After those 5 years, the vehicle is yours and you have no more tie-in with Star8.

Passengers will pay the same as they pay on any other jeepney, using cash. But there will be extra options like Beep card. Apparently they'll add some styling later to make them more bright and unique like the traditional jeepney :)

These are awesome! I'm glad to see the Philippines using more solar. Too bad the U.S. president isn't keeping up with the times. I think I'll stay here where people are friendly and hard working.
@GadgetAddict
@GadgetAddict 7 лет назад
Yeah finally! Such a sunny country and solar is really booming at the moment. Most of the MMDA lighted signs are now solar powered. I see the maintenance crew driving along in the early hours throwing buckets of water into the air to clean the panels. And more people are starting to put panels on their roof. What I'm surprised about is the lack of solar hot water heaters. In China they're on pretty much every property but here you rarely see them. I guess a lot of people prefer cool or cold showers but I still know people spending a lot of money on their electricity bill to cover an electric shower when they could add a solar water heater to the top of their house instead. I think some electric cars are pretty popular in the U.S. like the Prius right?

If I heard correctly about the drivers getting a fixed wage instead of relying on fares, surely that will improve the quality of life for the drivers and make things a lot less stressful. I do worry though that the new system could be open to a lot of abuse. Also, with regular "brownouts" during the hot months, what happens if a vehicle cannot be charged. The solar is not going to do it all. Just some thoughts.

Pixel Surge nuclear is too dangerous and already Philippines is affected by Fukushima. Notice the deformed children? Nuclear is just too expensive if you factor the true cost of nuclear. Plus you have the big problem of nuclear waste. Nuclear needs highly educated people to run it and Philippines safety record would be suicidel. You cannot afford to fk up with nuclear. Nuclear by its very nature is highly unstable, very high pressure, very high temperature, very high corrosion. That's a very dangerous combination. Reactor vessels don't last as long as they're meant to. Nuclear waste must be managed forever. Especially MOX fuel. If one of the technically most advanced races can't handle nuclear power what hope would Philippines have? Earthquakes near reactors don't mix. Flooding near nuclear reactors bad idea. Backup diesel generaters can't be underwater because they won't work. You can't be sloppy with nuclear power. DONA PAV proves Philippines doesn't have a strict safety record and even if they did Japan proves even the most advanced countries have diasters.
@eDriver
@eDriver 5 лет назад
@@brunsmip How stupid could it be, to implement nuclear power, while the rest of the world is trying to escape from nuclear power, It's just not 100% controllable. Only 99,9% And what happen with that 0,1% is obvious in Fukushima, Chernobyl and many others. just check in Google: "nuclear accidents" you can find almost hundreds... By the was is nuclear power only "cheap" for the moment, but the used "Nuclear fuel rods" needs care for thousands of years, which is very expensive.

What?! I live here! Aside from that, I dream of my own company making electric jeepneys. However, like other previous electric propulsion products, they seem to focus on the higher end/more expensive side which most Filipino drivers/families will not be able to afford. Amazingly, they have multiple products and I am not sure if that's efficient for a successful company in the future.

Thankfully Star8 are looking to make money from advertising on the jeeps rather than from selling them. So they can give the jeep for free or at a hugely subsidized cost. Of course there are requirements to be met, but it makes it attainable for the 'average person'.

These vehicles are very good. It ticks all the boxes. They just need maintenance and replacement panels if and when they have accidents. There's a few things I dnt agree on but don't shoot me. Eg: usb chargers and the possible snack vending machine should be removed. They should be radio controlled (not literally), GPS tracked, with timetable schedule, should have bustops, route numbers and maps. Will be good for all including tourists. Good for their advertising. 😊

Adding marshals is a great idea. One of my worst fears riding jeepneys is getting robbed and having a marshal on board will at least prevent things like that happening. They'll scare misbehaving passengers as well like those pesky perverts I read and see a lot in the news.
@GadgetAddict
@GadgetAddict 7 лет назад
True. I've heard many horror stories of people being pickpocketed while riding the Jeep or being felt up. Hopefully the marshals can watch out for that and quickly get to know which people in the area need to be banned from riding or closely monitored.

I think we'll also see a big improvement in the quality of driving once the drivers are given a wage instead of earning per passenger. There's a reason the Jeepneys stop in the middle of the road and race around so fast. They want to stop other drivers getting ahead of them and "stealing" their passengers. Once they have a proper wage, they won't need to drive like that anymore. They can just focus on providing a smooth and safe ride to their passengers. And yeah, having someone onboard keeping an eye on the passengers AND the driver doesn't hurt either ;)
@hey_joe4577
@hey_joe4577 7 лет назад
Ah, yes. I was not aware of drivers being paid a wage rather than a % or per person. Sounds like a good plan. maybe add a bonus for being a save driver. No accidents or incidents at the end of the month and get a bonus or reward of some kind. One of my old employers was like. Every 6mo we got a bonus for no safety violations.

Good work, man. If a local tv outfit made this feature documentary, half of the time we'd only see the face of the host on the screen. By the way, how long would the batteries last before they have to be replaced? Also, there are already all-electric jeepney type units (no aircon) plying the SM North-Katipunan route. They are charging the same fare as regular jeepneys I think.
@GadgetAddict
@GadgetAddict 7 лет назад
I've seen those electric jeepneys along Katipunan and the charge station at Ateneo :) I believe you're right, regular fare. But I don't know if they have any upgrades like the fans or USB ports. That's a good question about the batteries. I don't have any official answer for that from Star8 but my own research and experience with deep cycle batteries suggests anywhere from 4-12 years depending on how heavily discharged they are, how hot they get and how well maintained they are. Considering the lack of maintenance costs elsewhere on the vehicle, I think the cost should be manageable.

I think as a driver there's no downside. You get a more comfortable ride, power steering, a good brake system and passengers will prefer your Jeepney because it has better features for them. But of course some owners of the older Jeeps will continue to fight against the phase out of old vehicles because they want to keep their jeeps on the road forever and continue to make money. Putting aside the missing features, the truth is that many of the old jeepneys aren't properly maintained and really aren't safe. They have bald tires, worn out brakes, holes in the exhaust system and many don't even have lights at night. They're going to have a hard time convincing the public they should remain. On the flip side and to be fair, there are some very well maintained traditional Jeepneys with safe and polite drivers/owners. As for the demo routes, I'll see if I can get info on that :)

I've seen these units while it was being presented to the DENR, the problem is it cannot be deployed to high terrain areas for example antipolo or rodriguez rizal wherein there are inclined roads, the motor is not sufficient for those terrains and the problem is its solar, meaning it depends on sunlight power, so how about if it rains for 5 days continously whats your backup plan to keep those vehicles moving? We in our group have the best backup plans, and we'll introduce it to the market this year on our sample E-vehicles, no charging 24/7 365 days. And we'll even try it on our Tesla car. Good product though but it needs more analysis and improvement.

@GadgetAddict 7 лет назад
That's a fair point. While they can handle an incline, there's a limit, especially if it's loaded with a lot of passengers. Electric motors are high torque but there's still a limit. The solar is really only to extend the range, they still rely primarily on being charged from the grid.

I'm sure a lot of those materials can be local made. We need to think modernization based on manufacturing in the Philippines using local products!

Yes to solar but the problem here in manila is flood. What will be the preventive measure in solar car if in case if there is a flood.

The solar panels only extend the range. Most of the power will still come from normal grid charging.

Philippine transportation will never be "modern" in the true sense of the word until the authorities change the way these things run. They cant just keep on stopping anywhere anytime indefinitely.
@GadgetAddict
@GadgetAddict 7 лет назад
I don't know all the details of the PUV modernization program but I hope it includes specific official stops instead of just stopping everywhere. Like you say, it causes a lot of problems. I get triggered when a Jeepney stops and someone gets off, then it moves no more than 20 ft before it stops again to let someone else off. Like seriously? You couldn't just get off while it was stopped 5 seconds earlier?

It's great to see and it's about time,it's been a very loooong time coming.But it would be nice thought if they keep the tradition styling/looks so that you can identify that these vehicle are from the Philippines. And hope all the 1300 units they will be releasing should be divided for all three regions(Luzon,Visayas and Mindanao)not just in Luzon.Would they sell them to private owners in the near future to?Oh heres the website of the manufacturers of this vehicles if anyone is interested,www.star8.green.Thanks for sharing this,from a Pinoy downunder.

My guess would be that their initial focus will be on Metro Manila because the reach of the advertising they put on the Jeepneys. Since they're giving these vehicles for free, they're hugely reliant on that advertising money. But provided they can get companies who are happy to advertise in other regions, I don't see any reason why they can't send these all over the Philippines. I think their bigger plan is to push for PUV usage but I'm sure they'd consider selling direct, especially to resorts, private subdivisions and such like. Maybe one day we'll see the solar Jeepney listed on Lazada with free shipping lol

Its one of the excellent PEV Public Electric Vehicle that I've tried, it has a wide floor space, while the ventilation systems are cool. The USB ports are installed inside the underneath seats, clever designs to give some juice to any passenger's gadgets unlimited. The Upper roof is really good, it has that SOLAR PANEL that charges the whole unit, while waiting outside the road, since the solar charges the batteries before the unit reaches its lowbat, its continuously charged, in most designated charging units or post near Las Pinas. Its route are continuously servicing consumers of the Southern parts of Cavite, Las Pinas, Muntinlupa, and soon in many areas. This is one of a kind vehicle type(s) that can provide ultimate satisfaction for consumers, it is quiet, clean and smooth riding experience for everyone. One must try to get some ride using this PEV unit. SMEs.../../.../../../Riders/commuters/Consumers are well coordinated regarding their respective feedback about this type of vehicle. 2022 onwards. DON'T DELETE this is for Information only, not for solicitation. Thank you.
