It's finally time to start the first seeds for the 2024 garden!!
Richters Herbs richters.com/s...
This is always such an exciting time of year. Today I am starting onions and celery, it's about 13 weeks until my average last frost date. This will give these slow growing plants plenty of time to get started before being planted in the garden.

I’m in Saskatchewan so it’s wonderful to see which onions you’re growing. Kelsae is my favourite from 2023!

I liked the Kelsae too, hopefully I can get a few big big ones this year :)

I always think about letting some of my onions go to seed and saving them but then I always end up using them. 😅 Someday I'll manage it, I love the idea.

I leave onions, leeks, celery and carrots every year for next years seeds. I just pick the entire flower head off when the seeds are mature and place in a labeled paper bag until seed starting time. The other benefit to doing this is all the pollinators that are drawn to these flowers. Have a good day! Stay Well!!! New Subscriber

That's awesome!! I will really have to plan this spring where I am planting things, it would be great to save my own carrot seeds too :) Thanks for the sub!!

Onions love to be crowded and it's so easy to separate then when planting that I sow 30-40 seeds into a 4 inch pot. They are thriving. ❤ Thanks for sharing!

I'm in Grande Prairie Alberta and you can DEFINITELY leave onions in the garden to flower the following year. I do it every year. Zone 3

Yes, I have gotten a allotment pack from a community garden and have found 2 onions from the previous owner, they went to flower and I saved some seeds just for fun.

Awesome, thank you for sharing that with me. I will have to find a good spot for some onions this year where they can stay overwinter!

Have you tried walking onions? You leave them in the garden over winter and they multiply. More of a green onion but they do form a smaller bulb.

I haven't tried them, just seen some pictures. I will have to look for them, they do look pretty neat. I also love anything that overwinter :)

I have had the "missed" onions come up in the spring here in SK so I am pretty sure a person could just leave the bulb in the ground - might want to cover it with soil though. I grow utah, tango and this year pink plume. I have never had any trouble with bugs. I always plant on the east side of my pea trellis and last year mulched reasonably heavy with some used straw from the animal pen to control weeds and evaporation - they are high nitrogen feeders and big drinkers. Don't know if that's why I had no bugs but it did work well.

Thank you for the tips, I will try that this year! Mine were on the west side of my peas last year, will swap them. So far nothing has germinated for my Utah but the Pink ones have sprouted :)

@@FiveCanadianAcres They can be slower. Last year I had a heck of a time and ended up reseeding about middle of March. Tango came up no problem. I just planted mine on the 26th so nothing coming up yet.

Have you done Egyptian Walking Onions? I understand they are hardy over winter to zone 3?

I have not personally grown them but know a lot of people who do succesfully in zone 3. They are something I would love to add :)

I"m in sherwood park and while I've gardened before, I'd say I haven't cared about doing things right. This year I want to make a proper effort to grow things according to what the plant needs. I've heard that I should grow in coco coir and perlite, then feed with an organic fertilizer to start my seedlings under lights. I see you're starting with soil. I've had issues with fungus gnats in my house plants, so I'm worried about using soil and attracting them. Can you give any advice on this?
@FiveCanadianAcres
@FiveCanadianAcres 7 месяцев назад
Yes those fungus gnats can be a big problem. I use Pro-Mix HP, technically it's called a soil-less mixture, I should have clarified that. It contains peat, perilite and a few other things but no nutrients so it doesn't bring in those fungus gnats. I use an organic fertilizer as the seedlings grow (I start fertilizing once they get their first set of true leaves). I know there is some controversy with peat but from the research I have done I feel it is a better option than coco coir. I also have a video explaining this in a little more detail :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Rr7ODnV0qvw.html
