Hey Carah’s Mom, just wanted to let you know that you have an amazing strong knowledgeable daughter. Pat yourself on the back for raising a daughter who stands in her own truth. As a mom of 4 daughters I have never and would never want any kid to be a “yes kid.” I want a kid that’s brave and not afraid to stand up for their own ideals even if their ideals are different than mine. Different isn’t bad it’s just different. No one wants a kid that just rolls over and says “whatever, I won’t argue or my ideas don’t matter as long as mom is happy.” You did a good job Carah’s mom. All is well.

You've been through a whole lot in a very short time. That you hit a roadblock and had to separate to be able to come back together isn't surprising. Super glad to see you two owning your individual crap, supporting each other through it and standing up for other, even to each other... if that makes sense. Your love each other is so clear. More, I get the feeling you've rediscovered that you really, really like each other and can be friends as well as spouses. Much love and respect for your brave transparency, guys... so glad you two found true for you.

We need to normalize taking breaks/separating to take care of mental health and to potentially make a marriage healthier. Or really anything a couple needs to make sure it's a healthy thing for everyone involved, even if that means divorce in the end. Kudos to you guys for recognizing what you needed and taking those steps.

My spouse and I took 6 month break. We had all the things and the kids and it felt like life was a joyless grind. My spouse and I started to just resent each other and we knew we loved each other but we were breaking each other. We bot grew so much in 6 short months and while life hasn’t been bump free we have been together for 21 years. The kid years were the hardest, so know it gets better and that if you can keep loving each other and being honest - it will work itself out especially with you both committing to self care and self growth. Keep your chin up and endure and you’ll get through the storm.

Thank you for telling us how you're doing. Santa Monica? Yeh... I raised my kids there, but it seems they're packing more and more people and buildings in those few square miles. It's beautiful there, but glad you got out. Sounds weird, but I'm with you guys. I had to find some calm place to rest my soul, and try to realize what God really is for me. Taking care of the kids while searching for more awareness is hard, but thank you for letting us peek in on the process. Best wishes to you both. Lynn

Carah my hubby and I separated for about 6 months when we had a nine year old and 3 five year olds. All girls. Best thing we ever did. We came back together with better focus, aligned goals, love for each other and a much stronger dedication to our marriage. Nothing is harder on a marriage than children. I will admit that. Carah and Aaron some days I had to remind myself that I wanted these children, I wasn’t raped. I actively participated in getting myself prego. Actually I didn’t sign up for triplets but here they are, healthy and happy so this is our reality now. In the end we discovered that our marriage separation showed us that we really had something worth fighting for. 33 years later we are still going strong. Stu and I both embraced the marriage/kid chaos and jumped back in with both feet setting the resentments for each other aside. Was it easy? Hell no. What it worth it? Hell yeah. Best wishes to both of you in whatever you both decide moving forward. My heart goes out to both of you.

I have struggled with talking, explaining too much all of my life. I only recently learned it is usually connected to not feeling believed as a child. Which so hit home for me. I was thinking that if I was just truly heard, I would be believed. And our over explaining ourselves for this easily morphs into over explaining everything. It would so hurt when people, 99% of this from my family members, would say i was selfish for this. Things like what I thought was explaining why I could empathize with people or situations, ended up looking like I was making it about me. It was so humiliating to be thought of as self centered. I would try to catch myself, to stop it in the moment. But it was like I was missing some ability, as of I were missing some sort of filter everyone else had. Then I would end up too quiet because I was scared of being judged for my not being able to judge how to even talk with people. Anyway, understanding this has helped me to finally start to temper this with some success. Don't feel badly, you are such a seeker of truth, you will get it. Also don't forget, women are called out for this far more than men.

I was in a marriage previously where I behaved like this and really drowned out my ex in so many ways. It didn’t work. In my new marriage, I don’t do that and have learned how to temper myself, to LISTEN more than speak. This is a tremendous life skill to hone, not only in marriages but in all relationships.

i've done a lot of research on mental health including adhd, brain fog, depression, anxiety, etc... I think that ADHD is basically a brain type that is not the majority. but i don't think it's an illness... i think it's just a type. And of course there are benefits and drawbacks of each brain type... but i believe we can optimize our brain function naturally so we can benefit and not beat ourselves up about how we're different. I've helped a lot of people do that too.

Having a third child increases the chances of a couple divorcing, as does job stress/loss of a job and health problems.

Scruplocity is real for young Mormons, especially when you lose a parent at a young age and you feel immense epic pressure to keep a family together through your goodness and keeping your covenants so your family can be made whole again some day. That's the kind of scruplocity guilt that kills.

I'm a never-mo who got into a relationship with a "Mormon in church records only" (he doesn't want to disappoint his mother so he's keeping his records in until she passes away) over 11 years ago. Our relationship has been rocky over the years leading to 2 significant periods where we just could not talk to each other unless it was directly related to our kids. He couldn't move out because we didn't have the funds to support the kids on our own income alone and I am disabled and really needed his help with the children. It wasn't until 2016 when I started to investigate the church that I figured out why we had so many problems in our relationship. To be fair, I wasn't going because I wanted to be in the church, we were just trying to get help with food and even though my fiancé is a member, they still wanted me to get baptized so I went to all the classes (side note, after 8 weeks we were denied assistance and I was told that it would be a good idea if I just not come to church again. They never explained why but just kicked me out). Anyway, our entire issues came down to patriarchy and communication. He was constantly feeling like a failure because he was taught only one way to be a man, and with his depression he could never measure up to that. And i really sucked at making and communicating my needs and boundaries. It took awhile for him to actually sit down with me and the ces letter for him to start to understand how he was raised and how traumatic that can be to a male who never really felt priesthood worthy. The last few years have been really really good because we're finally on the same wavelength and we literally made out lists of needs wants and desires so that we each had ways to approach and communicate with each other. Sometimes separation is the only way to bring us back together and show us what really matters in life.

Sounds like you're introverted, Kara ;) i am too. It's hard to believe when we talk a lot for a living or are really friendly and not shy, but it just has more to do with what depletes you and what energizes you. Personally i love to talk to people and get out and help people heal, but it's exhausting and i have to be alone to recharge. So introverted ADHD brain that talks to people all day, check :)

When you add in the "celestial" kingdom part of Mormonism, it demonstrates perfectly the amount of manipulation that is present in Mormon marriages. I have never really considered that point until you both brought it up in this discussion. It was kind of a clever innovation from Joseph Smith. Although admittedly, I have no idea who actually came up with the idea. I'm sure it's not necessarily present in all Mormon marriages, but I'm guessing it probably really rears it's ugly head when both of the spouses are poor.

ADHD here. Made it thru HS, college, grad school. Amazed. Not diagnosed until 2014. Hmmm. In my experience too much weed messes with your brain in some not necessarily the greatest ways. So be careful.

What's the deal with ex-mormons and mushrooms/weed? I've heard so many stories that involves drugs in this post traumatic experience. Why so many of them go straight to numb themselves after?

Agreed, I dig all of your content, Carah, but by 30 minutes in I had to give up listening because I was so tired of hearing you talk over him or for him. You both rock and I soooooo appreciate everything you put online. It was just a very different experience trying to watch you two share the mic…
