Infantry combat has been lacking for me in the whole wargame and steel division series where the better unit will almost always win where I am looking for features such as digging in setting up defenses if standing still for some time (digging foxholes/ trenches) and also moving at diffrent speeds like the old close combat games where if you sneak you might spot an ambush and plan attacks from diffrent directions or move faster and do not spot the ambush.
yea it kind of seems like a cross contamination from the wargame series where they said that infantry would be so mobile they wouldn't have any time to dig in, where as WW2 had much more static battles and slower moving infantry
I wrote it since Air Land battle in the forum and in youtube: "Correct speed for all units" Also since W:RD: the trucks are gone, whats immersion breaking if infantry is unloading. Simple solution: Make the point value of the truck very high, once the infantry is unloaded. ... You compared by guessing, it could go in the direction, at least a little bit, on the Total War Seria. Well, if the concept of the strategic map is good made with infrastructure, logistics and weather, why not?
A division is a huge amount of units to control. In game you pretty much control a battalion sized force. The equipment availability is based off the division though. So when they say that it will be a battalion based game that means that we will still be controlling the same basic force size. So I don't think anything is changing in regards to that.
You can summon up to 5 batallions in campaign, dont know though if you will have enough requisition points in 30 minutes to call all units. Do you even need req. points in campaign I dont know. 10v10 battles would be then 50 vs 50 batallions.
@@izvarzone 5 battalions is just too many units for a single person to reasonable micromanage, in the current steel division your force usually ranges between company and battalion size. 2 battalions would be very difficult to control, 5 is unimaginable. The 5 battalions you can summon in the campaign probably means that you can choose your equipment from 5 different formations.
The issue with that, however, is it means that infantry also wont fire on armor with their handheld AT unless fired upon first. There should be a button or hotkey that functions the same as the Z button, but WILL fire on armor when in range. As it is now, there is too much micromanaging to pull off tank ambushes without babysitting the infantry when it isn't needed imo.
That's a really good point. You can actually do that by toggling all weapons other than AT off on your infantry (you can do it in the box in the bottom right when the unit is selected) so they won't fire with anything other than AT. The down side is obviously that they won't be able to use any of their weapons other than AT if they are engaged. An "AT Ambush" stance would be a good addition as it would avoid that problem.
Yep, you hit the nail on the head. As things are now, needless micromanagement is involved either way. That AT ambush stance would be a much needed remedy. Hopefully Eugen checks the forums because I posted something about it a while back.
One thing that i miss in SD 1 is sound of the weapons in the deck building phase... veterans of Close Combat series know what i am talking about. Every weapon listed in the squad selection could be clicked and it provided fire sound (even granade blasts etc). It was small but such immersive and satisfactory detail that i adored and I really hope they will implement it in SD2 ! It should not be dificult to do since all the sounds are already in the game, just put it in the decks!
@2:40 you talked about a grand strategy the incorporated both theater level and battlefield control. What about Empire Total War? That’s a wonderful game that is exactly what you’ve asked for.
Just found your channal and appreciate another wargamer on YT. In regards to the Level in SD and the Batallion level comment: I think what they could have meant is, that SD 44 was actually based on Battalions. While The Divisions gave their name and the frame, we certainly did not control divisions. What we had on the field, pushing around Squads and individual Vehicles, amounted maybe to a Bn. That's also the (of of many) qualm I had with the game. I think the comment might be understood in this light.
Old at thirty? Dude, some of your viewers are more than twice your age. Might've tried out Rise of Nations or Rome: Total War (not to mention Europa Barbarorum) once upon a time but yeah, clickfests are no fun at all. Welcome to the club!
As a huge WWII fan since the early 80's I always want to like games like these, but sadly they always move too fast for me to enjoy them. I prefer games that reward better strategy and tactics and not just who's the better micromanager and mouse-clicker. Hopefully SD2 isn't like the other Eugen games in that regard.
I agree that the gameplay was too fast. If you zoom in to ground level, units moved about 2x their natural speed. Speed should be cut in half imo, while still giving the option to speed it up if you want.
Faster speed does not contradict better tactics or strategies. Players who are fast does not mean they are stupid and can't use tactics or strats. While I'd like some easier way to put infantry into long line with less APM requirment, but I still want manually control each squad and tank or artillery gun or plane.
@@izvarzone No one is saying x-playerbase is smarter than y-playerbase. I'm saying I don't like the fast gameplay and frantic clicking most modern RTS games represent today. To me I prefer a game that rewards he who knows how and where to use the best units. Not just he who is the better micromanager.
@@taffelost6221 Eugen games aren't even really bad in this regard btw. I agree they're not exactly "slow" games, they are more traditional RTT/RTS type games but they're sort of a middle ground between the high clicks-per-minute where you have to manage a base and all your units and you have to micro them around different ways and concentrate on 5 parts of the map at the same time and the slowest paced games (which honestly it's hard for me to think of examples of in real time). They could get fast paced if you got simultaneously attacked in multiple places or were attacking in one and defending in another particularly with unit level AI being a bit derpy at times, but I really don't classify it as being overly fast paced for this sort of game in general.
Just play Men of War 2 every mission here is basically looking at icons and flat map most of the time, it's definitely not my thing. What's the point in rendering all the vehicles when if you want to play this game and actually win you have to play it zoomed out. If someone would made "World in Conflict" version of WWII with in-depth story that would be perfect. I'm looking at you Massive Entertainment, you Division spongy piece of crap....
I really like the Phase system it naturally escalates the battle and it makes some units valuable that you would otherwise never touch, wich I found was a shame in wargame for so many units to just be plane useless.
you know what would be cool, whan, if you would make a unit surrender in a battle in teh campagne, it would get added as a captured unit in your batallion reserve. also it would be awesome, if you could play the campagne in coop and versus.
I liked AI in Steel Division, it had decent multitask and sometimes could blindfire with atry (but not as smart as real ppl). Sometimes suicide attacks with infantry are stupid, but they can still win due to good multitask. I actually see AI doing better than players in online matches. When player ragequit after losing sector in team game, replaced by AI and AI takes sector back. Of course good player will be better than AI, but AI is better than bad player.
I mean, the AI being better than bad players is self evident if you've ever played with bad or new players against the AI. Hell, the medium AI could sometimes kick my ass when I first started, and I at least had the experience of wargame (though it wasn't wholly transferrable). Now (or at least when I last played which was actually a while ago, I want a good singleplayer campaign) the normal AI wouldn't have any real chance against me (maybe if I was really tired and playing like crap) but still, it is admirably good and with minimal bonuses. I don't know what bonuses it does and doesn't get, but it doesn't feel like it's blatantly cheating in almost every regard the way it did in RD and to some extent ALB which is really what I'm asking for from an AI.
You can see where the Steel Divisions units are going by hitting shift I believe. While you click on the unit. My KEY gripe about Steel Divisions is the nerfed artillery ranges. A Hummel with a range of 1500 meters? Please! They could shoot over 6km. My dad who was a tank company commander in 1950s and 1960s Europe tried playing with me and liked the game but wanted to quit playing over the artillery experience. As a company commander he was trained on artillery strikes and called them in. He said there were lots of problems. He was also introduced to the army through recon and said there were a few things off there too.
Get your dad to play Wargame: Red Dragon, It is a lot more realistic in this aspect - except it is Cold War warfare from the 60/70s - 90s. Still interesting.
The WarSimmer:::good first video that dont force you to watch a AD, or even a 5-second AD, and for that my friend you earned your self a subscriber, unlike them other greedy youtubers..., i am looking for something like this, the world of tanks is Grindy, as to world of warships, war thunder.
The WarSimmer :: Do you know if they ever Fixed the Cheating Ai issues along with everything else in Wargame Red Dragon ??? thought i was the only one who thought that. i did notices a difference in Decks in SD2 but its totally fun to play i just bought it, and still have a ton of things to look into.
The AI is like 1000x better in Steel Division over wargame. I think it still "cheats" to an extent, but the zerg rushing mindless zombie part of it is gone. It plays a lot more naturally now.
I'd like to point out that this is Eugens normal way of producing their titles. See Wargame European Escalation and Wargame Red Dragon for pretty much the exact same game but set in 1970 and 1990 respectively. I'm hyped as heck for this
They're different games, but you can still tell they come from the same people. Kinda how a game of Stellaris and HOI would compare, except maybe a wee bit less similar.
I wasn't very impressed with the end result of Steel Division, so SDII has a LOT to prove. The basics I expect to see, that were not present in the first game: - Laying mines and mine fields - Infantry can dig trenches, HMGs and Mortar troops can dig basic fox-hole style emplacements for added defense. - Annihilation mode (none of that territory capture BS) - Finland as a playable army - The Karl-Gerat as a field-able artillery piece - 586th Fighter Aviation Regiment (Lydia Litvyak) - JG52 Fighter Ace Unit (Erich Hartmann) - Michael Whittmann and Hans Von Luck as panzer aces. - Stalingrad, Leningrad, Sebastapol, and Kursk as maps.
The problem was the new moral system and vehicles can't move to forest to make an ambush...very lack of diversity of weapon type compare to Red Dragon, there wasn't tactical campaign, limited spam mechanics to make less choices, etc. that's why Red Dragon still popular and Divison servers drop down players in a sort time...
What I hate is the lack of modability as well as them not making major changes with their current releases via patches. Instead they go and make a new game instead, just so they can charge more money for a few extra features and changes. Another thing that annoys me is that they only do small 'campaigns' that have barely any turns. Why can't they do a massive scale on the 2nd world war and actively develop the game with new features, mechanics, campaign's, modding etc? A good example would be the way Paradox handle their games. It's the one thing that annoys me about games that have so much more potential. They make a new game just to add one big feature. WG to air land battles, then red dragon with ships. Fucking bullshit if you ask me, the fuckers know exactly what they're upto
One thing that's a bit of turn off is the aces aren't really aces but just have a different camo. Because it would be "unfair""pay to win". So ahem wittman was the same as any other Tiger commander etc? Even if I didn't buy the aces pack I wouldnt be annoyed if someone did and used a better "ace" against me. Should be balanced with an increase in points.
The WarSimmer : i Totally Agree on the Cheating Ai in WarGame-RD, i been playing Battlegroups, against the Ai on EASY Mode, and still Loose. i played BattleGroups to supposedly get my practice on B4 going in the Campainges, But it's useless, Now unlike Steel Division Normandy 44. Least i have i fighting Chance, and i have been doing well in that RTS game, the Ai is Tuff But gives you the chance to fight and defend, its a dam Shame Wargame-RD is a Fail, something needs to be done, and i just got Both Games Feb-2019, and ST Norm 44. i am Progressing, so Look forward to Getting soon as it Hits the Market, Now if WarGame RD, Developers, came up with something new to it, i would Pass on it unless there was something done to it, give the player a chance to set up and per place units B4 the Launch not after, But until then they get a Bad Review from me and i would not Recommend it !!! side note, i am also not a big fan of multiplayer, in these RTS Games, the only time i Play with Other Players in World Of Warship, War Thunder, and games of that style, but these type games Na, Least not for the moment, Ai is pretty Challenging as is.
The AI is WG:RD is for sure an entirely different beast. It has zero intelligence, but compensates by getting 10x the amount of units you do and just throwing them in. SD44 is way better in the sense that it mimics a human player better. Keep up the practice, especially with SD, and you'll feel comfy playing multiplayer every now and then. Good luck!
@@TheWarSimmer :: i Like SD44 A lot, for the moment i am playing Battlegroups to practice, haven't even done the first Campainge, thinking if i lose i will lose lots of something, LOL. But i am still being a heard head trying to get better at WG:RD, since i bought least want to beat the Ai, then again i did just buy Both Games, feb/24/2019, guess I'm wanting to learn to fast, got to remind my self i'm no Spring Chicken anymore, LOL, ima Oldie But Goodie. Well thanks for the encouragement, most Definitely i will keep Playing SD44, and Soon SD2 by the looks of SD2, Looks Neat and bet tons of Fun, Good Look Troop, remember to Duck and Weave, on the Battle Field Soldier, LOL 👍🏼
I find fast micro in Company of heroes 2 enjoybale but SteelDivision is a game that wasn't designed with micro intensve gameplay in mind yet it forces you to babysit every unit and position them with milimeter precision. Also i detest those clusterfuck hedge infested maps and no space to flank and inability to mount a proper offensive becouse you have to value every shit tanks way too much.
For sure, no AI is amazing. Really, the best AI I've seen in a game is the original F.E.A.R... but as far as RTS wargames go, I can't think of many that are better than Steel Division. Which ones are you thinking of that are better?
