Stellantis Formally Responded to my Questions on the Demon 170! I'm Confused!

After weeks of waiting for answers, Stellantis engineers finally responded to me regarding the questions I posed about the Demon 170. Many are questioning how often the engine oil should be changed, what type of oil to use, how to properly break in the engine, what spark plugs are ideal, and multiple other critical things Demon 170 owners should know. The Demon 170 Owners Supplement is extremely vague on many of these topics, so I asked for further clarification from Stellantis. I give you my thoughts on what they said and tell you why I am disappointed.

Sadly, of course their replies are vague. It's called CYA = Cover your ass (as in cover their ass). So they can manipulate their answer once something goes wrong, to best suit THEIR needs. You also mentioned, "If you have a 170, you better not be driving it like a grandma. Dodge built them to race. My theory is that they did build it in hopes people would park them in their garage and just look at them. For those that do race them. LIKE YOU. That is where their vague (CYA) comes into play to help them, get away from any responsibility. Again, walk away from the car, while the walking it good. IMO

That'd be my guess. I highly doubt it's a "quality engineer". They don't work on the vehicles, they look at warranty data and coordinate warranty claims, they have nothing to do with anything in the mechanical or control systems.

As a retired automotive technican, and based upon my own personal experience, I would NEVER go 3,000 miles on the OEM oil on ANY new car raced or not. I have been using high quailty synthetics long before it was vogue, over 40 years now with labroratory analysis on every oil change, and have purchased over 30 new vehicles both gas & diesel in that time period. There are a ton of wear metals generated in a new engine, so my practice it to change the engine oil and filter at 1,000 miles, and then again at 5,000 miles, and then every 5,000 miles thereafter. It usually takes approimately 15,000 miles before the engine wear metals start settling down to normal levels on a gas engine, and closer to 30,000 miles on a diesel engine. That being said, on the cars that I have raced, I too use a 20 run rule. For example, my 2022 Dodge Challenger 1320 had a very proper and exact break-in of 1,500 miles before it hit the track for the 1st time, and had an oil change at 1,000 miles, again at 1,500 miles, and another one at 1,600 miles. It is still showing higher than normal metal content in the oil, but the numbers are coming down. It should be noted that once this car hit 1,500 miles it was never street driven again, it is a dedicated bone stock race car with a single seat from the factory. So are my intervals overkill, yes they are, but oil is so much cheaper than hard parts, labor, down time, and frustration. Plus I have my own vehicle lift in my nice large home shop, so why not! Thanks for the info RacerX, it is much appreciated!

While I don’t disagree with changing the oil at 1,000 miles, I’m sure the OEM oil in that thing is synthetic, the same oil they recommend you always use. But again, an extra oil change at 1,000 miles is cheap insurance. Especially for something like the Demon 170.

@@PonkyKong Back in the '70's and 80's that's pretty much what we did, new oil & filter before and after every racing weekend event with a street driven car, and on a dedicated race car just after every racing event (or before the next race in any case). Spark plugs on a naturally asipirated car usually got changed about every other racing event. Now adays with far superior lubricants we usually go about every other racing event, or in my case with anaylisis about every 100 miles on the odometer, again, this is of course on N/A cars, I'd change every single race with these 1000hp cars without a doubt! These platitnum and iridium spark plugs can hold up for a while though, I see no reason to change those out that often...

Ever think they’re being vague because they know people buying these cars know cars well, so they should have the common sense to know what they’re doing like changing oil? Oil is cheap compared to an engine, or engine parts. If you’re bothering to send the oil off to get it analyzed,…just go ahead and change it in the process. You’re already draining some to get tested. Wait and extra 5 mins and refill the fill amount, done. Use info towards next oil change. Also make sure YOU know what you’re talking about… NKG spark plugs…? You even show in the video you’re saying it wrong having it literally spelled out in the writing from Stella it’s NGK. And make sure you’re considering if they’re talking about mm or thousands of an in. Many people watch your videos to actually get educated, not just for entertainment. So please provide proper info, if you’re going to provide it. Aside from that enjoy the car

With all due respect, you're confusing metric and imperial measurements with the plug gap scenario. The anonymous engineer is referencing .028" - .030" (inches) and Stellantis is referencing .6mm (millimeter). You're saying .6-.8 "sounds really big", but that's .023" to .031".

checking the quality of the oil in this instance isn't hard. is the oil burnt? black? does it have an odd smell? (fuel, smells burned). sending it out for analysis should be done once an oil change if you are racing it and really want to make sure you aren't tearing up the motor. I do not understand why anyone thinks you are going to get a clear cut answer. they have to answer vague due to the fact they cant give detailed answers for every persons exact circumstances.

When did men grow so limp. My father used the logic if the factory says 5 thousand he was changing the oil at 2500 to 3 thousand m. If he went racing and did a few passes it didn’t matter the oil was going to be changed regardless of miles driven It’s an oil change big deal. There is no confusion use quality oil. Change your engine oil frequently especially running E85 and follow the gapping. They didn’t say to send off to the lab. This guy is reading into statements too much. I think people want their hand held and to be reassured . Engines fail it happens even from the factory. It’s covered under warranty. If your can afford a 150k you can afford an oil change once a month every other month.

We always dyno our engines to check for leaks then check the egt temps to make jetting changes for optimal air fuel ratios and once that's done timing is checked then they let the engine cool down to heat sink a few times then full on engine pulls & the dyno operator can actually see on the graph charts when the rings are seated . The engine needs to have a load put on it to seat the rings properly . It also depends on what type of rings are being used & what type of hone is used for a specific ring package so the rings will seat correctly. You would think that Dodge or whoever builds these engines would run them on some sort of dyno be it a engine dyno or chassis dyno to put a load on the engine to break the engine in & seat the rings so it's ready to race especially with how much these cars cost . Engines that don't get properly broke in tend to use more oil and have more blowby and will tend to have more ring wash where the fuel is going past the rings & ends up in the oil diluting the oil which thins the oil down . Too much ring wash from incorrect jetting or to much full added with fuel injection will cause cylinder wear damage because the fuel is literally washing the oil off of the cylinders and rings . The Brits on the old triumph motorcycles used to use Chrome rings for the engines & found out that it took way longer for the rings to seat in that also caused a lot of oil burning and consumption and also found out that the chrome rings wore the cylinders out faster so they eventually dropped the chrome rings and went to regular cast iron piston rings to fix these problems they were having . Drag cars always need to have the oil changed more frequently because of the excess fuel from WOT and short runs so it's always better to change it more often . K&N filters used to make oil filters for cars and trucks that used a fine screen for it's filtering capabilities and it could be taken apart to inspect the screen for metal particles and cleaned to be used over & over again but I'm not sure if they still make these types of oil filters or not anymore but back in the day a lot of racers used them to keep an eye on what was going on internally with the engines far as metal particles and chips that would tell them it's time to tear down & rebuild before the engine grenades.

Change your oil every 3 months or 1,500 miles and you should be safe. I read on one of the forums there is a tsb bulletin regarding the spark plug gap, the dealer will re gap under warranty. My question is are they going to reuse the old plugs, which is a no no in my books as they have a crush washer, or install new ones. The Champion part number doesn't come up on a google search, Maybe they will use Bosh or NGK. As for plug gap most boosted engines have spark blow out over .030 so .028 is a safe bet. In regards to lubrication from fuel, you need to remember pump E85 has 15% regular pump gas so there is your lubrication. I would be more concerned with the powdered metal connecting rods in these motors, there is a RU-vid video of a Silver Demon 170 that broke a rod at the top end of the track. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lAa_HDxqUnU.htmlsi=TfZcCc0gUMZEGBh5

😂 clearly these "answers" were written by a salesman for the brand not an engineer. Or, even more likely it's probably some kid working at STAR who drew the short straw to reply. After working for Dodge for 20 years, 13 a a technician, it's pretty clear that kids come in from college and have to put in a couple years at STAR before they can move up. Makes it pretty frustrating as a technician when you're dealing with kids reading from a manual that are replying to you.

Personally I would use an engine oil with more ZDDP like Driven 5W-40. Today's API certified oils are NOT good enough for an engine like that.
@peteloomis8456
@peteloomis8456 3 месяца назад
These engines use factory hydraulic roller cams so no need for the added zinc . Also if too much zinc is used it can actually hurt a engine . Engines that run flat tappet hydraulic or solid lifter cams need some zinc to prevent the lifters & cam lobes from failing which has been a issue as of late because the cams being made now most are made in China and the quality of the machining and the quality of the metal used to make these cams has dropped significantly to a point that a lot of people are having issues with cam failures plus all the modern engines are using roller cams & that's what these cam manufacturers are trying to push for people who own & use these older engines to swap over to roller cams which are much more expensive than a regular flat tappet hydraulic or solid cam costs . Chrysler GM and Ford all switched to roller cams in most all of their engines because of emissions reasons & the new oils made now specifically synthetic does not have any zinc in it at all . If the engine starts to use oil then the zinc in the oil will also clog up the catalytic converters in these new engines so that another reason why they eliminated zinc in these new synthetic oils because it helps cut down on dirty emissions.
@rcberry
@rcberry 3 месяца назад
The EPA started removing ZDDP from oil in the 90's. Oil since the 40's contained around 1500ppm of ZDDP. Engines ran flat tappet cams without issue. Roller cams helped with the reduced ZDDP but today's certified API oils are down to 800ppm. I don't care what anyone says that ain't good enough for a 1,000 HP engine! As far as hurting catalytic converters is more myth than reality.

I've had oil analysis done on every oil change for the past 40 years on over 30 vehicles, and I can personally tell you that the wear metals do not settle down to normal levels on gasoline engines until after approximately 15,000 miles, and approximately 30,000 miles on diesel engines. This is why I have always changed my vehicles at 1,000 miles, again after 4,000 miles (5,000 on the odometer) and every 5k after that (much more often on cars that are raced).

FYI in my experience as long as you get the car up to operating temp any ethanol that happens to get in the fuel burns off. I did a video on Blackstone analysis from my car that ran E85 for a year without an oil change. Also, all Stellantis has to do is get these cars past their warranty period, that's why there are no definitive answers. We have to use our experience to know what's best long term. Kinda bad for the guys that lack that experience so we'll have to help educate. Official Stellantis plug gap is now .024" and will be set by dealer if car experiences misfires.

If you want to watch and engine break in go to a national NHRA event and watch them rebuild the engine every pass, the break in procedure lasts less then 10 minutes

That's what engine dynos are for to heat sink the engine & to put a load on the engine to seat the rings . Our dyno guy can tell when the rings are seated by the chart graphs he gets with each pull on the engine and that's when the power also goes up with timing & jetting changes or changes to the injection controller to add or take away the fuel where needed .

If you go to the drag strip/track rental often, you must keep a log of your passes.. IMO no more than 10 passes and you should change the oil immediately after that.. End of story, especially when using ethanol.. It gets contaminated with the ethanol easily.. So there is no checking its quallity, you just change it.. All this vague terminology is so they can deny warranties.. Your racing a $100k + dollar car.. Racing isn't a cheap hobby.. You always error on the side of caution and change the oil more often than you would think is needed..

I would LOVE for Kuniskis to validate that letter is A.I. generated. Those are by No means answers that would be given by engineers...not a one. If there are any machinists on here they can verify that you can monitor the quality of your oil by ysing a refractometer. The question about oil starvation ; well you answered it: it's a factory production engine. The way Mopar sees it; dry sump is aftermarket because of the much higher cost to maintain/repair. 20 runs is a good rule of thumb but that was on older builds. Todays cars are too woke...I mean too sensitive to be reefed on that long on booze. I'd only run.between 12-15 full blown passes then change the oil. 0W40 should be fine if you only beat on it occationally; once a month; and up to 30K miles. By that time I'd start checking out blow by & compression loss %. Really if it's driven hard more than 30% of the time and mostly run on E85, you treat it like a race motor and plan for a rebuild around 35-40K to increase longevity. BRW, here's something to think about. With Sterlinkus firing Tim AND the fact that the new cars on new chassis are still being designed with room for a gas motor and trans, how much longer do you think they'll be allowed to stay solvent? You know Fiat hates Mopar and wants to supplant it with Fiat and Alfa products. I really wish everyone working for Ma Mopar from the security guard to the head office grew some balls and bought every share out from under Stellancrap and got back to making cars that people Want to buy in the configuration the want at a reasonable cost. Seriously, $80K for a Ram pick-up? You gotta be nuts.

By quality I think they mean it shouldn't look burnt or black on the towel.. But he's right there's no way to test it.. I know the cars not going to be mad at you for keeping the oil fresh though.. Even the weekend warriors should be checking their oil and changing it more often I would think.. Like if your at 1000 miles and then you have a weekend where you are hard on the car, like very hard on the car it's probably ok to change the oil early.. To each his own though..

If you track a car on E85 I ALWAYS change oil around 100 miles. These cars with big fuel systems running E will cause the oil to degrade rapidly. I would run an oil like Motul 300V for track use, but I wouldn't change oil specs too far from the manufacturer specs, they set the bearing clearances so they know what will work best. Check oil every time you fill up with fuel, and every oil change send a sample off to the lab. When the car is on E never do a short trip, always make sure your oil not just the coolant is up to temp. Screw those Champion plugs, switch to NKG or Brisk and check gap every oil change. That .6 gap is laughable, don't do that. When they're saying check the oil quality one thing with ethanol is to smell the oil, you can smell heavy ethanol when the oil gets watered down with ethanol contamination. Again this is part of every time you fuel up. They can't give specifics since the duty stress for everyone is different. If you just track and only run E, you will need to change more than the boomer who only cruises to cars and coffee to park and post up a boomer board while sitting in a lawn chair. My experience may be a bit more extreme since I came from 2 - 2.5L cars that trap 150+ in the quarter on good old corn juice and 50psi+ of tiawaneese tornado shoved down it's throat. The lessons learned are the same just on a more extreme level. Keep the oil clean and smelling like oil, and keep the plugs clean and gapped correctly. Use premium pump for normal use and only feed it the moonshine at the track and while in Mexico. I'm not a scientist, just an idiot who ran a 800 - 1000whp Subaru for years and kept it reliable.

Which is why I feel they recommend checking levels and quality visually. You've been doing this awhile X, but not everyone has. So now, as collector values go, would the engine still be “numbers matching”? Could this potentially affect future value of the car? 🤔 Just thought about it. I changed my oil the first time at 500 miles, then again 2,500 miles later, then every 3,000 miles after that. Over the life of the vehicle costs is a little more, but I have 25 year old vehicle that don’t leak or burn oil.
