Amazon makes money. They just spend a lot of money. They could quit spending at any point and show a profit. Isn't this the problem with the economy right now? All the corps are hoarding money. What good does it do us to have all these corporations hoarding cash? Really. What good does that do us?

Not that u were wrong at the time of this post, ballmer may have been right in the long term. That one trick pony aint working for apple. Ultimately Microsoft simply never would have been good at execution of phones had they even had first movers advantage. Microsoft’s heart is in the enterprise,b2b. But it was stupid to assume apple would fail in the short term.

I liked most of what Ballmer said until the 250 billion part. It might have been a ego thing because Charlie was pushing him a bit, but the only reason why he made 250 billion off his tenure was because of Microsoft's capitalization of the computer revolution with it's operating system, as the success of the company has been trickle down off of it ever since. Also, while Ballmer was CEO, the company spread itself way too wide (contrary to Apple's belief of riding only the right horses) and basically missed every single tech related opportunity such as social networking, email, search, post PC devices such as smartphones, tablets and so on. Ballmer's only major accomplishment as CEO was the reinforcement of the enterprise market, which any brain dead CEO could of done with the monopolistic position Microsoft already held. *edit: most importantly, what's left of Microsoft's culture of innovation has literally been sucked out. And as many prospects believe, Microsoft is going down the glide scope because they've stagnated way too long without successfully adapting to the fast changing environment, which comprised of post-PC devices and etc. As even Satya Nadella (current CEO of Microsoft) stated, the company has to rebuild it's culture, and focus on innovation.
@McDonaldsDude
@McDonaldsDude 9 лет назад
Kyu Ho Lee So much truth in this post it could be used as truth serum. Ballmer was one of the worst CEOs ever, but I honestly think Microsoft's slide was inevitable - they were never really innovative. As Ballmer said, "We want to catch the next wave." They never wanted to make the next wave.
@nightwolfbick
@nightwolfbick 9 лет назад
Tarman In some respects, I do agree that some of the stagnation was inevitable. Microsoft, even with their limitless capital was going through political turmoil both within and outside the company, and was way too big of a corporation to make fast changes from bottom up. And of course, seeing product innovation from the top never happened with Ballmer in charge. We can even make a stark comparison with him and Steve Jobs and as we know, they're worlds apart. In a more technical point of view, Microsoft's stock perpetually glided down ever since Ballmer's tenure and because of his huge failure of a bet with Vista and Windows 8, he took the whole computer industry down within him. To be more specific, the PC industry (except for OSX) has been losing growth over the past 3-4 years. Now that's insane.
@ericnicholls3955

I disliked Ballmer as a CEO and as a human being for the following reasons: -He said that Linux was cancer. And Linux currently powers most servers, phones and even cars. -He declared war at Google. He yelled at an employee because he was going to work for Google and he said that he was going to f** Google. -Microsoft felt like a buffet of lawyers rather than a tech company. They were just suing everyone even for stuff that they didn't create but they had a similar patent. By doing that, they lost any opportunity they could have had during the post PC era. Satya Nadella Is a cool guy and he is taking Microsoft to the next level. -

Amazon is investing in more capacity, especially internationally to fulfill orders. Why focus on profitability when you can grow and take as much worldwide market share as possible?
@oscar6832
@oscar6832 6 лет назад
Truth is, Ballmer is right. A business that is not profitable has no value to an investor because they get no return on their money. If you couldn't sell Amazon's stock after you bought it, it would be useless so the stock is purely valued on expected future stock price increase, which by the way is the definition of a stock bubble.

No, Amazon doesn't make any profit because they reinvest all the money they make so that they can evade taxes. There's an article about this and at one point Amazon was worth more than microsoft and today it make 3x revenue compared to msft.

Could somebody please elaborate on Ballmer's assertion that because Amazon had a $150 billion market cap that the shareholders must think that at some point Amazon will earn $15 billion pre-tax (annually)?
@francisjtuk
@francisjtuk 9 лет назад
pools closed Basically using the price earnings multiple estimate of 10x. ie/ if you pay 150bn for something then then you have priced it at 10 x their EBITDA (pre-tax profits or operating margin) which means they believe it will make 15bn profit per annum.
@ZubairKhan-tt8ev
@ZubairKhan-tt8ev 6 лет назад
typical 'fair valuation' is considered 10 times earnings. so if you're making $15B pretax annually you should be worth at least $150B

Shocking to hear such ignorance from a guy who is worth around 40 billion. Of course when your business model is monopoly and grotesquely over inflated profit margins, I can understand why you would be confused by a company with such thin margins. There is a big difference between making no profit and reinvesting profit into growing. He is partially right. They are spread too thin. And worse, they are sticking their toes in a lot of obvious losers, like amazon fresh, but to say they aren't making any money is just silly.

Amazon stock shoots for the bottom : Steve Ballmer : Man on a sinking ship acting like it didn't hit the iceberg . Both Ebay and Amazon being destroyed by misguided management. Capitalism unable to come up with a better model to compete : That's really too bad especially after both Ebay and Amazon are so intent on self destruction. It started out great and then through a series of so called improvements for the sake of customer satisfaction (they said): they ruined it ! Now it kinda (and sometimes more than kinda) sucks to shop on Ebay and Amazon. Even if you still enjoy doing business with these two giants ; you have to admit it's not the same (by that I mean not as good) as it used to be.
