5:30 put the polymer bolt buffer in the freezer for a few minutes to cool and shrink it. (This is the reverse of heating to expand a part, like soaking tubing to slip over the end of a fitting.) Most Ruger receiver pins encountered (historically?) are a loose fit, so there have been aftermarket oversize pins available for years (+0.001 inch so finger pressure to insert, finder pressure with the stock loose pin to remove). A former Alaska guide told me of a client with a Model 77 that would not function, and when opened up a pin had fallen from the action into the bottom of the stock, which they reinserted and secured with a band-aid for the rest of the trip..

Wow how did I not know the 10/22 was THAT easy to put together!? I want to swap my 18 inch barrel out with a 16 inch but didn't want to bring it in

I agree with the pinned comment on Caleb’s 10/22 build. Y’all should make these builds available as a full kit on the website, along with the third build using the clear anodized receiver. That would be pretty cool!

It's a very nice build but I always replace the Ruger standard barrels (The Ruger heavy bull barrels are generally ok )with a good quality replacement like ER Shaw, Volquartzen, etc.
@onmilo
@onmilo 7 месяцев назад
The newest Ruger OEM barrels are quite good. I would not call them "Match Grade", but for the average shooter, most will find them quite acceptable.
@frankbrowning328
@frankbrowning328 7 месяцев назад
@@onmilo I haven't bought a new standard model Ruger 10/22 in the last 7 yrs or so. The last 5 I built would barely shoot inside a 1 1/2'' group at 25 yards with the factory standard barrel even with higher quality ammo. My ER Shaw match barrel shoots most everything in a small all bullets touching group at twice that distance. I think if a person is already buiding 1 they might as well spend the extra for a good barrel.

I have a "box stock" 10/22 I bought in the late 80's. With 550-rd bulk box Federal 36 grn HP high velocity rounds*, I got 10-rd groups at 50 yds (4x32 B&L scope, indoor range, seated, sandbag rest) you can cover with a dime. *Rounds were weighed on a digital reloading scale, and separated in groups by 1/10th grn weight differences. Ten rounds from five weight groups (middle of the distribution of weights) were shot to determine which weight shot best in the rifle. A lot of work, but I ended up with almost 80 rounds (out of 550) in the most accurate weight, and another 75 or so rounds in the second most accurate weight, which is still good enough for headshots on squirrels at 50 yards. A second 550-round box of the same round, with the same batch number, shot exactly the same.

I'd like to shoot one of these built up custom 10/22 rifles because I will never own one. A trigger group, bolt and barrel from the Volquartsen website is $950. I still use my 30 year old 10/22 with the birch wood stock. The only think I did to it was replace the metal trigger group with the Ruger BX target trigger group & I made a Delrin bolt stop pin to replace the steel pin.

I built a BRN-22 a few years ago. Turned into a great gun, but it’s the roughest 10/22 receiver I’ve ever handled. Took lots of break in to smooth out, and still isn’t near as smooth as a Ruger.

I imagine the Volquartsen has the bolt stop that hold open on the last round? It's been a while I remember changing out the Ruger one for a Volqurtsen that had that feature on a older 10/22 I had.

Okay, you say you're going to put an optic on "down the road". The problem I see is that the base you have is very tall in profile and will block the present standard iron sights.

The Ruger BX trigger won't go to "safe" if the gun isn't cocked. You can dry-fire it and then the safety will sit at the halfway point, making it easier to assemble/disassemble.

I had a toolbox cart drawer full of factory 10/22 barrels from customers that no longer wanted them after I installed a threaded or bull barrel on their rifle. Shameful I would have given them all away but I had to trash them after I retired. As long as I was in business no customer ever came in wanting a factory 10/22 barrel.
@Oldbmwr100rs
@Oldbmwr100rs 7 месяцев назад
The factory barrels are honestly excellent, it's rimfire after all, it's not like they wear out. But yeah, people get obsessed with aftermarket parts and throw away perfectly good parts, basically how I built mine and it's perfectly good.

I’m surprised that a gunsmith with years of experience would assemble the bolt and spring assembly dry. That is surprising to say the least. I would also think that with a custom build, using a torque wrench on the screws with a bit of blue lock tight would be prudent.

@rmblwgn
@rmblwgn 7 месяцев назад
There is almost no support for the 22 magnum. There are a few companies out there that make receivers but they may not be in business anymore. Ruger needs to figure it out using modern design and bring back the 1022 Magnum

The bolt and trigger group alone are over $600! For rimfire! Better to leave it stock and buy a CZ .22 bolt action for better accuracy.
@Oldbmwr100rs
@Oldbmwr100rs 7 месяцев назад
Read the post? Bolt action, and that will give better accuracy then semi auto, and the CZ has a hammer forged barrel as well, much higher quality piece then a 10-.22, if accuracy is what you're going for. But it's rimfire, how much can you expect?@sixgunnerdotorg4425

@Oldbmwr100rs
@Oldbmwr100rs 7 месяцев назад
I got most of my parts from Ebay, new barrel, stock and BX trigger group as I had a bolt and receiver already. You can get take off new parts and build a nice one for less than new depending on how many mods you want.
@raykettel1837
@raykettel1837 7 месяцев назад
$1000 for a 10/22 with few or no Ruger parts is on option some prefer or ~$600 for a Tikka T1X or CZ 457 bolt action rifles plus more if one wants a chassis is another option. Base Ruger is $280 on sale but many end up replacing many or most parts and end up at $1000+.
