This brings me to tears every time I hear it. Reminds me of my father. He was my guitar hero my entire life before I lost him. He was responsible for my music career, starting in 1986. This was his most favorite instrumental song ever. It was the song he asked me to play the night he passed away. I'll never get over how beautiful this piece of music is. ❤️
My name is Douglas Rollins, I've been playing drums for 50 years. I think with all my heart and soul you are the best guitar player in the world. I've played Van Halen, Jimmie Hendrix, Eric Clapton and you are the best . Please let me please play with your band at least once before I die. I'm 58 now but can still rock my balls off!
This song makes me cry. It hurts the soul thinking about my father that I lost last year to this awful COVID. He died alone in the hospital and it has scarred me for life. Through this song, the pain that I feel, I hope my father feels the love I had for him and that I tried and tried but couldn't make it to be by his side during his last moments. I hope he knowsI tried and that I love him.....and that this song is dedicated to him....
@@NubsWithGuns to me is what humans have done to other humans. Think about 2020 as you are coming from 1999 and you will se the insanity of it all. people coudnt be with their sick families and now nobody cares if you have it, this was just one of many many inhuman behaivours that we lived. I hope some day we have a trial to find a new perspective on what has happened. regards
He played this when I saw him live in Glasgow. It was just one of the warmup songs but let me tell you, it was a godly experience. Small venue, close to him. Actually seeing him live is something else, that’s when you fully appreciate his ability and the beauty of this song. The entire audience was transfixed, it was glorious. I can still feel the same chills in my spine from that day when I hear it now. Mesmerising, truly one of my greatest experiences.
Thats the beauty of seeing a concert, anytime you hear the music later your brain connects it to the feelings and memories of the concert. You can hear the music on a transister radio and your brain fills in the full body. Just so happens that Vai sounds good even on a broken speaker.
Am I the only one who is thinking that that sounded like a conversation with whales? For me, it was spiritual and THAT'S where it took me, thank you Steve Vai :)
The music is spiritual I meditate with it but down to earth as well. Your interpretation is how you perceive and relate to his music personal to you. I guess ok
I just woke up and here the music of Steve Vai in my head. Must practice so more. I can listen all the time. Learning the guitar the way he plays. I have much learning to do. My fingers have found new muscles. So sore
When he plays, he more or less converts the guitar into an extension of himself, and he is so good that he already knows what the note sounds like before he plays it, his expressions show his mastery.
What is there not to like. He is in the top five guitarists in the world. Not afraid to take chances and will let it all hang out. This piece is simply beautiful.
Michael Burdo I heard that too. Specially it slowed down his picking hand. In addition to that he doesn’t spend 12 hours a day practicing technique any more so his ability isn’t quite on the mind-blowing level it was around the Alien Love Secrets Days. But his composition and emotion are stronger than they’ve ever been.
❤️🔥 WOW, I saw this for the 1st time today and, as usual, was completely blown away by the performance! I’m going on 70, and only recently ‘discovered’ Steve Vai by accident (looking for SRV’s music instead), but it’s one of THE BEST music search ‘mistakes’ I’ve made to date. Not only is it the talented 🎸 playing, but that in combination with his emotional and unique style that sets him apart from so many others imo. IDK what genre I’d even consider him to be in, but think he’s in his OWN! Another bravo 👏 👍 performance of SO many❗️
We saw him last week, and it was my gf’s first time seeing him. During this song she gave me a look towards the end and we both had tears in our eyes. And it’s not even one of the songs by him that I even like to listen to. He has such a way of evoking such intense emotions in his playing. It’s unreal.
I was at Berklee in 1979. Steve was there and played like this then. He was 18 years old. I told him then that he would be great. He and bassist Victor Bailey were in the same band. Two super musicians. Glad to have that experience. We where all just teenagers.
met Steve in the Reno airport once years ago as he was sitting having a coffee. Just said hi and that I was a fan and tried to get out of his space but he invited me to set down and had a few minutes of shooting the breeze. Steve is a great gentle soul with a peace that comes from doing what you love in life and always trying for that next level.
As a student of steve vai, he is the kindest and genuine guy. Hart if gold and his music is a reflection of him. A good hard working honest man who makes sound on an instrument and we get happy and smile.music is about feeling somthing and his music always captured that. I hope one day my art can transcend and touch as many lives as his music has. Am honored to have called him a teacher, but bless to call him a friend. Thank you steve. You help me keep going ever day!!
It's fitting that the name of this song is "Whispering A Prayer" because the sound truly is an utterance to God which cannot be inspired by anyone besides Him. Thank you Steve for expressing your heart in this most beautiful and passionate way. And may God hear your lovely whisper.
@@brycecooper9073yeah it’s just so much talent for sure, reminds me to Gary Moore same felling and talent just giving everything on stage.. they’re souls and life.
Sometimes I'm inspired as a guitarist. This, as usual, is amazing. Steve never disappoints. Sometimes, especially when I go to the comments section, as a guitarist, I'm very ashamed. Some of the comments are deplorable. This guy plays as good as a guitar can physically be played.
He goes beyond just being a guitarist though. He is also a fantastic performer and perfectly understands how to build tension and release according to the audience. Few performers (let alone guitarists) are able to truly capture audiences not just impress them with skill.
Adolph Oliver Bush I play, Yngwie turned me onto guitars and then I searched others. Hence my name I like.to tell people he did more with just one song " For The Love Of God" than some guitarists entire discography! FACT
This man is a freaking MASTERPIECE guitar player that captivates any audience into his personal journey with any song he is playing in my opinion. ..Just listen to this song and that should be all you need to know about this man and his music.... thank you Steve Vai for your incredible gift of music 🎵🎶❤️
Not generally a fan of the "shred merchants" - something Vai can do when he chooses of course - but Vai pushes the limits of possibility with the electric guitar in terms of sound and virtuosity and this performance is simple beautiful and a joy to watch and hear. You can also see the joy in his face and body as he performs. Exceptional amongst guitarists.
What a guitar player this guy is!! Why haven't I known more about him?! He I a phenomenal player!! He never drank did drugs or mess around with women, he's just a great guy!! I really misses long hair though.. 🎶🎸🎵
He's expressing himself with such originality and random people in the comments are telling him to "use less effects" Yeah thanks for your usefull opinion, Vai will surely listen to your advices
I've been slammed for using effects. I have a Fernandes Retro-Rocket Elite with active sustainer pickups. A guitar player guy at a gig one night challenged me to get that sustain without using the sustainers. He told me the only way I could make my guitar SCREAM like that was my pickups and a 9V battery. I switched to my Telecaster and screamed even louder. He then bought me a beer,, lol.
Ya exactly. Meanwhile he could blow their minds with an out of tune two string acoustic guitar from Walmart. He’s used “less effects “. When he taught himself to play.
@@woodywoodlstein9519 the learning process is sacred. What a musical genius and yet shows an approachable method. Learning what he does. Easy no. Hard work of both structure of music and creative genius again. Can you do better. I cant
A true master of his craft. Undeniable talent just drips from this man's guitar. Rock on Steve. Fucking kill it. Blow my brains all over the floor man!!
The expression and feeling in his performance is just amazing. Steve Vai has amazing technique, but above all he seems to have an incredible respect and understanding of melody. This really hit me emotionally.
Steve Vai uses the sustainer beautifully on this song, it's so nice to see him play with emotion and feeling. Beautiful work, and he uses his effects (Echo, natural feedback from the amplifiers) to the fullest extent on this performance.
No words can explain the feelings I`we got every time I hear this song. Thank you, Steve, for all the emotions that surround me while listening to your melodies
"Whispering A Prayer" is an amazing spiritual experience every time I listen to it. Thank you Steve Vai for pouring out ur heart. You are a true Virtuoso who has impacted my life. Forever grateful!🙏
...fabulous exhibition of his craft, superb! Nearly shed a small tear in parts.... just felt some spiritual elements of Jeff' emanating, floating back to Earth... bless!
What a good feeling this song brings! He managed to bring out the many wonderful passages of my life !! Steve is incredible! Great master in his art...
I'm percussionist...but love to listening and watching any kind of arts, specially when the artist can telling us something....by dancing, playing music, using brush and staff like that. In that case, Steve telling us a lot of things, showing us his world. Respect, Maestro! You don't need to be viryuoso to sing, play music, dance perfect...
So true but easier said than done. For me anyway. I get so nervous at times and yet not at others. Unpredictable at times. After the performance is done. I relax as a general rule. My performing experience Dj and opening dance floors with appropriate music and dance. When I start it flows but the start. Well hope it improves my only hope.
@@miroslavtabyashki thanks for the encouragement. As I said previously I am mostly a professional Dj. I have being paid for that. With live bands everything and anything including cooking for them after a gig or going out and having a wow of a time. It doesn't seem like work because I loved every moment. Even then I used to go to separate room and blast their ears off with music. It was hilarious. The guitar and vocals was a complete surprise to me. Something I take very seriously too. I am a bit of a perfectionist unless I have a few drinks. Then the guitar plays itself it seems as the vocals do. People present like it. I just keep going until the party ends. I will show my guitar playing when I feel happy that I have done it as it should sound. A life goal. It has being said to me many times. Consequently, it's time I do. I wish the same for you. At the moment as well as practising the notes on the guitar, is capturing the mood and become the music so it translates when I play it. I do the same with vocals. Many thanks for your reply. If you have any music you want to share. I am keen to listen. Again thanks, and bye for now
Who needs a VISUALIZER when you've got Steve's FACE! A joy to listen to...and a joy to watch his soul connected to his fingers.. connected to his shoulders... connected to his face muscles... it's all hooked up, baby! From heel to tippy tio finger tips....here is a musician WHOLLY in sync with his instrument...his entire physical being....his spiritual being....and with the whole fμ¢k¡Πg universe!
A guitarist friend of mine from years back said to me once that he had extraordinary respect for Steve Vai's ability to play guitar. (He didn't have much to say about anyone else.) He went to one of Steve Vai's guitar clinics and was the first to arrive. When he walked in to the room Steve was sitting in a chair with one leg up on a desk playing his guitar when he stopped and greeted him by speaking with his guitar, saying "How are you?" "Thanks for coming, take a seat." He said that he was really impressed by that because it meant that Vai really knew his shit when it came to playing because what he did wasn't musical in nature and it would take an extraordinary talent to even figure out how to make a few words sound right but Via went on to have a conversation using his guitar to talk with like it was as easy as using his own voice. I always thought was interesting.
My inspiration. Once I heard him make the guitar sound like another instrument or language it changed my life. True music, I can escape and forget about everything!
Pretending to play the guitar for 20 years won't guarrantee any music understanding to anyone. Vai is certainly in the Olympo of guitar Gods along with many others: Hendrix, Zappa, Satriani, SRV, Blackmore, Guilmour, May, Angus, Gilbert, Van Halen, Iomy, Schenker... never ending list ... you can argue who has better technique or who is faster ... but the sound they produce is unique to any of them and thus can't be compared ... as any piece of "row art" you can like it or not but you are not in position to say what is good or not, specially if you are not a professional musician. In my case, I really like Scot Henderson playing.... but I will never say is better than the others because all of them are artist and deserve respect.
Just yesterday i got demotivated by one of my colleagues. I was in my own zone of progressive rock of odd beats, then he be like" bro dont play watever you like" then somewhere it pinched me alot, but the thing was i doing the things i know, improvising, just hearing from someone who just listens to all musics and judged me through by my one type of style, may be it left a big hole, i cant get over it, am i not an artist? Been through lot of instruments and years of practice just a style could judge me, what a shame
Bhupendra Thapa Dont be bothered by other players just go your way what you believe it right. you need strong mental that is not shaked by devil speakers.. go for ur destination and enjoy every singe moment you re playing , then if you feel happiness , that is it for you.
Its incredible to hear what Steve Vai is able to get out from his JEM without overwhelmed sound clusters. A gentle synthesizer and some very few drum notes ... a simple melody and a deep knowledge about his instrument and technique efforts - no more is necessary to create great music. No speed races no endless shredding .....
Little known fact, this was shot at a much more fluid frame rate. But the raw power and talent of Vai and his group was so immense that the cameras began melting and lost a lot of the frames.
he's blessed with his music, and we are blessed with him! after listening to any of his solo, i feel like leaving everything else and to pick up my guitar, find my way, to find peace, joy and give meaning to life!
I'm 88% sure that Steve Vai is from a different galaxy....or a different time.......or a different galaxy and a different time. I've watched this hundreds of times, and it blows me away every time!!!! Jack Butler can play!
Every time I hear this man he keeps innovating and improving himself. What a treasure we have such a talented young man to share his emotions with us. Not to mention YOUR THE MOST AMAZING GUITARIST EVER!!
Steve Vai makes me cry. Tears of joy and gratitude for the beautiful sound he brings to my ears and the wondrous images that form in my mind’s eye as his music spins its tales.
Bravo!!!👏👏👏What a maestro, Steve Vai is! Glorious composition here! Such incredible passion in his music 🎵🎶, & you can see it exuding from his intensely beautiful pores & soul! This, just ripped my heart right out, & sent it soaring to the heavens above! Wow! Thank you, Steve!🌹💜🌍
As a musician, to have a song or an idea in mind and have it come out "precisely" as you envisioned is phenomenal, at least. But to play said song live with an audience, and to convey that same idea to everyone that hears it, is otherworldly. At least, if you are Steve Vai and your song is "Whispering a Prayer," then it is business as usual. And that is what makes him and his music so freakin' special, to me..
Like Joe Satriani, Steve is living, breathing, walking music. I can't be mad at him for all the effects he uses because without all of it, it would still be mind blowing.
amazing. amazing skill, style, ear, and amazing person. cannot begin to thank mr. Via for the inspiration, moral and emotional support and clarity he has given into my own expression as a player. oh, yeah, amazing foresight as im sure he knew these things flow into our lives and transcend notes in grouping. cant say enough, and ive never met the man. from the bottom of my heart thank you. i hope you have some understanding of your enormous impact.
thats the subjective part and opinions will vary, his knowledge, skill, and desire to share with oyher musicians is not. These were the thongs i was commenting on. btw, i am usually entertained by his creativity and melodies.
Beautiful! Such genius! And we can all tell by watching him, the man is absolutely & mindfully engaged in this , as we all are afforded to be, with this fantastic performance! Steve Vai is par excellence! 💜🌍
I think when Steve finally lays his head to rest , FLO and EVO will be buried with him. Those two guitars are about as symbolic to his playing and to himself than any instrument that any musician has played with. When he is using either of those two , its two completely different feelings and he conveys that through them both so easily. FLO is clearly his melodic and hit you in the feels guitar , and EVO is his pick me up and shredding guitar. A master of the sound he creates with both. We listen to him , he listens to them , and it shows.
I love Steve. I have since I heard Passion & Warfare in my early teens around 1990 ... I have that guitar (Jem7vwh) it's so easy to play and sounds amazing. There's a lot of people (gen z mainly) who shit on him claiming their guy ia better and tbat steve has been far surpassed ... I'm an objective person and that is categoriacally untrue ...
@@sci_ent_ificsui_neg9236 well , i have always been the person that would say , what does better mean? Are there people that play notes faster? cleaner? Know scales better? Maybe its better at different genres of music? I mean wtf does better actually mean? I can tell you this , Steve Vai , is a virtuoso , which is as good as it gets for anyone to be classified as that. One of my personal factors that I think is true of only a few guitarist. When a song is heard , without reading who the guitarist is , can you TELL who it is. I can honestly tell you , there is a few that are so distinct , that its almost as solid as granite stone. I can literally hear any song they are playing in , and within seconds , tell you who it is playing. That to me is more defining of what is better than anything else. Here are those guitarist on a very short list , Steve Vai , Joe Satriani , Hendrix , SRV , Eddie , Malmsteen and Rhodes.
@@Obxhatman Totally agree. If I HAD to pick one guitarist still technically in front I'd say Alan Holdsworth, but that's with a gun to my head. However I love Vai the most because YES he's a genius as a technician and innovator but most of all because his melodies can bring me to tears with the emotion. Without Vai I wouldn't play.
This has a special place in my heart,I listen to this everyday when I feel discouraged in guitar. This song is like a bridge and it helps me to cope up in order for me to reach my goal.I will cherish this for a lifetime
Syeve Vai. The most FLAMBOYANT guitar expressionist of my generation. Him and his guitar are as one instrument; inseparable, unstoppable...till death do they part.
i felt like i was there just watching a yt video, Steve, you made love to your guitar, your band and your audience, and the universe was united for a few precious moments
Saw him play this live during his passion and warfare 25th anniversary tour and it was transcendent. It was absolutely perfect and there were many people with tears in their eyes for good reason.
