Simon Morgan is the lead french Horn player on this recording.
This original theme for Steve Wright on BBC Radio One, was written in 1993...this is the same recording that played daily on BBC Radio 2 in the UK. I have re-mastered it to put a bit of shine onto a slightly dusty recording!! AJ - Anthony James, Composer.

I’ve had Steve’s theme tune in my head since he passed and keep listening to it. I’d been listening to Steve since I was at school back in the 1980’s and loved his shows so much. He was a constant in mine and millions of other peoples lives, entertaining us and making us laugh so every day and he had such a lovely warm kind voice. The thought that he’s no longer in this world with us is so unbelievable. Will really miss hearing his voice. RIP Steve we love you and miss you ❤

Why do I always feel good when listening to Steve Wright's radio 2 into theme tune? What is about this particular tune. Please don't ever change it.

Postscript: I worked as a freelancer at BBC Radio London in the 1970s and 80s. We had some great jingles, beds and themes, but Steve’s theme was without a doubt the best Ident ever. Is there anybody in the UK, who cannot sing along to this brilliant tune? I met Steve a couple of times back in the day, and he was just a lovely, kind, funny, decent chap.

Every time i hear this on Steve's show on R2 it really does cheer me up no end...As much as everything has changed beyond belief...It's nice to know Steve Wright is still ere and making us all happy...and this indent intro is testament to continuity in my life..some things do stay the same...Great work.

I love Steve Wright in the afternoon on Radio 2! This jingle always brings a smile to my face! 'This is Steve Wright in the afternoon with the big show live from 2 to 5' & his classic 'HELLO' How are you doing?' Before he says this it's 'Cheers whoever reads the news out & cheers Jeremy Vine for a great show as always'!

Can you remember the previous opening theme from the early 90's? I can't seem to find it anywhere. It had a stadium crowd cheering over it and the cheering would always fade into the first song.

There was another opening music bed Steve Wright used before this, and there was two versions, one done without a vocal intro over the opening bars done by an orchestra, and the same done by the orchestra, a second version with a 'Steve Wright In The Afternoon' vocal intro over the opening bars. Did you do that?

Talking of this being a theme that never gets old (and it really doesn't - I was amazed to discover it has been going 27 years)... Based on the photo you must have been about 10 when you produced the original theme in 1993! A child prodigy??!
@ajproductionsmusic
@ajproductionsmusic 3 года назад
Close very close but not quite. 🤣😎. Glad you enjoy it anyway. It was never intended to be a main theme but just a sort of bed. Funny how these things happen.

@@ajproductionsmusic I just hope you have a good royalties arrangement set up for it! That is interesting that is was a kind of happy accident. Just realised I don't have a "history" for many jingles, but this one does, so at the very real risk of seeming far too obsessed with this: I first heard SW's theme when I was in someone else's car years ago, long before I ever considered myself to be in Radio 2's target age category, and without a clue who Steve Wright was, but already a lifelong tv/radio jingles and idents anorak. As I heard it that time, I remember my gradually dawning sense of delight as I realised this ditty with its superb motifs was not just another record, but in fact some sort of bumper-length ident, and as I didn't realise it was for Steve's show, I just thought that Radio 2 had an occasional extra ident that they'd decided to play to fill in before the news, which I thought was really really cool. (FWIW, 0:24 and 0:30 are what I consider to be the moments of pure genius in the piece.) Didn't think I'd ever hear it again though, what with being too young and hip for R2 myself, and all that (as if I was every hip). Some years after that, when someone suggested I'd probably enjoy Radio 2 while working from home, I discovered I did :D - and that I was therefore probably middle aged :( . My feelings about that were tempered by the rediscovery of his theme, and lo, an obsession was born. I guess I've always been more interested in broadcast branding than the actual content; with SW it is no different :D I enjoyed finding the 'making of' on here a few years ago, but somehow am late to the party of these releases of the other versions and master tracks, only having found them last week. It is somehow a whole new level of endearing to discover that you seem view this 50 second masterpiece as one of your greatest achievements. I mean, I don't disagree... but I can only presume you've had a career of many other equally high-quality successes, which any normal (i.e. not jingle-obsessed) commentator would rate as more significant. (Ha, but what do they know.)
@MQsCues
@MQsCues 3 года назад
On second thoughts... a little bit more investigation reveals that jingles IS what you do, so all your other hits are also jingles. So it's not as unusual as I thought that you'd consider this one to be one of your greatest. And non-jingle-obsessed commentators probably wouldn't know where to begin with any of it, but that is totally as it should be, too.

Actually Mervyn it is this exact recording he uses with crowd FX and other sounds he placed on top. It sound's different maybe because I have re-mastered it without over compressing or limiting it. :-)
