They woke Stevie up out of a sound sleep and he steps right on stage, rubs the sleep away, and just blows the roof off with a Sound Check before the show!! I love this guy so damn much.

It's funny because I've always known life without SRV so in my mind he doesn't age. But as a 27 years old looking at this dude who's probably in his early 30s it really makes me appreciate what he brought. Another iconic talent taken way too soon

At age 19 in 1978 I moved to Austin from the Dallas area. One night I walked into a bar on Guadelupe St. There was no crowd , no cover. I heard Jimi Hendrix playing a version of Third Stone From the Sun I had never heard before. I thought"at least the juke box in this dive is lit". Then I looked over at the little corner they used as a stage and there was a dude doing things to his guitar that would get you ten years in some states. It was over a year before his first album came out. After, I saw him every chance I got, and yes I still miss him. Thanks for this friend, I am a long time sub for you. Blessings.

I first saw him a couple of times when I lived in Austin in the 70s at a small place called the ROME INN and Lou Ann Barton was singing. A while later, I went to one of Antone's many places when it was on Guadalupe. I went into the bathroom and I heard what I thought was Hendrix playing Voodoo Chile. Walked out and it was Stevie, minus Lou Ann (thank god). I knew then how great he was. The last time I saw him was in Dallas the year he died playing with Jeff Beck.

The first time I saw him in person was in Nacogdoches Texas at a bar called the Crossroads in front of about 80 people. The last time was at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas opening for The Who in front of tens of thousands. He was a God!

I was at the Cotton Bowl that day when TN won, but I was a country music idiot and didn't appreciate his brilliance at that time. It's sad that it took his death to introduce his beautiful music and passion to me. Thank God for those who recorded his performances so our grandchildren can be exposed to truly great music we had once upon a time. May sweet Stevie always rest in peace.

When people say they don’t know who SRV is I bring them to this sound check. It’s incredible. I don’t think there has ever been anyone more fluid with the guitar. Also Jamal, Stevie would play so hard that his finger tips would split and he’d have to super glue them mid show to keep playing.

In 1981, in the Houston Chronicle, there was an announcement that Stevie Ray Vaughan was to play at the Pub on the Rice University campus for FREE. I arrived in the small pub and grabbed the table in front of him and maybe Double Trouble. In the Pub were about five pairs of people socializing with each other, two single students studying and the bartender. They were all oblivious to what was going on on the very small corner stage.

Jamal, every summer we have a couple blues jams up here in the Midwest. There is a local one at a small venue in July, Trempealeau, Wisconsin. Blues Bash, or Dave and Howard's Birthday Bash. We have Reggae Fest too. Come do a live show. It's at the Trempealeau Hotel. Talk about walking back in time. It's on the Mississippi, and if you're lucky, the big riverboats cruise by. That's always fun waving to them. Sun setting over the Big Muddy, drinks, good food, Blues players, and lots of fun people dancing.

A friend of mine worked on the Don't Mess With Texas anti litter campaign produced by the State of Texas in the 80s when Stevie came in to do his spot ,my friend who played Guitar somehow talked Stevie into letting him try to play his SRV Stratocaster, I say tried to play because Stevie was using such a heavy gauge string set that he couldn't press most of the strings to the frett board. Stevie had a good laugh over it, My friend said that Stevie told him that his guitar was set up just like Hendrix's strat, Stevie even had the whammy bar on top, like Hendrix did, a product of Hendrix being left handed, but his father bought him his first guitar, used, and it was set up for a right handed player, and that's how Hendrix learned to play ,by flipping it around which put the Whammy on top.
