Stihl MS 170 Carving Bars - Thoughts on STIHL and CANNON brand.

Welcome folks, Its cold and windy here in Kentucky and I thought we would go over some points and thoughts I had on my Stihl MS 170s running a Stihl brand carving bar and another running a Cannon carving bar. Just wanted to give people some info as to where and how to get ahold of some of these items. Please know this is not an endorsement of either brand or what to go with, just my view from my experience of using them. Hopefully this video will help some other beginner chainsaw carvers they may be wondering about the bars.

Bars -
Stihl 12 inch dime tip running a 1/4 pitch chain in the .50 gauge.
Cannon 8 inch dime tip running a 1/4 pitch chain in the .50 gauge.

I get it for sure. I use Bluetooth ear protection to help block out the noise. Good luck to you.

great video my friend. do you flip over that stihl carving bar every couple pf sharpenings , or do you not do that with these carving bars ?

Great video! I too purchased an 8 inch Cannon bar for my MS 180 and was wondering if you had to put a universal bar mount in between the saw and the cannon bar? Without it, I think the chain is not getting oiled and overheating. Did your 8” bar come with one of those?

Mine fit the just fine on the 170, the only thing it came with was a little piece of plastic to use as a shim I believe. I would take bar and chain off and try just running the chain through the grooves by hand and see if the bar is tight on the chain anywhere. I know both my cannons had tight spots that I just put a flat head screw driver in and widened out a tad. New chains will be a little snug for a moment until everything kind of seats in. Pore a little extra oil over chain and bar. And make sure oiler is working, may have to take bar off with it running to see if oil is coming out. Hope all that helps a little. Lol

And yes, my 8 inch Canon bar also came with a little shim or gasket, from what I can understand it blocks off some other oil holes that you do not want oil getting into. I guess that makes it a universal bar, but who knows. I will try it today! Thanks again for the response :)

some people use a 1/8th in file on the micro chains especially with a .43 gauge chain and bar. i use a 5/32 on the 1/4 pitch .50 gauge stihl 13rms carving chain.

Im using a 1/4 pitch .50 gauge chain and sprocket. The 1/4 pitch sprocket was bought at a Stihl dealership and the chains I buy from sawnuts.com

I love my cannon bar.. they take a beating.. all kiddind aside...the best thing you can keep handy is a feminine napkin ( heavy use tampon) i keep one within reach while i carve. If ya ever cut yourself shove thst thing in the cut... it will swell up and help stop or slow down the bleeding... keep carving!!
