This is by far the most requested video I've had so here it is guys I hope you like it... literally from teardown to start up with everything I can possibly show you in-between... the last video I had to pull and edit to avoid issues... what a process that is for a 1.5 hr video lol...
Big thanks to Elijah for letting me post his saw and he's another Hotshot wildfire guy and they dont get much more legit than that... the 461s I do all go to wildfire crews and im honored to do it...
If you are interested in the actual numbers and details on the build just email me johnscustomsaws@gmail.com and I can explain... I have no problem sharing... the way I do the piston and machining is different so I can't give out the details of that build of you don't have the ability to machine everything... but im happy to help you out... Like I said there is no "secret sauce" bit it does depend on how you go about it... certain numbers will work for certain builds and I would need to know the details...

Recently discovered your channel through your ms200t port for treeson. Thank you for creating these videos. You obviously know what you are doing and you present the material in a way most anyone can understand it. I have always wanted to get into porting. I have an ms461 so this video is a huge help. Honestly just from watching the ms200t porting video several times I was confident enough in porting my ms461 but this is one better. I have done quite a bit of research but nothing compares to the quality and value of information you present. Thank you

I used to be a certified Mercury Marine mechanic and one of the first things they told us to ask about if an outboard came in with a dead cylinder and an excessive amount of smoke was "Do you use it for trolling (more important on the 65 horsepower and up engines) and then check the boat for an oil container to see if they were using a oil for air cooled engines or for marine use. Most people never seem to understand that the oil for an outboard engine is formulated to burn cleaner at a lower engine temperature than an air cooled one but I found one engine that was used more for low speed trolling or as a shuttle service for taking people from the dock to their private houseboat moorage that when we pulled the bottom piston out of an 85 horsepower four cylinder you couldn't see where any of the piston rings were at because of the oil fouling. But it also served to cut down on the lubrication of the piston itself and it had beat the skirt up so bad that you could almost put the thing back into the bore sideways because of the skirt shape.

Followed through on watching this video all the way through for ya, learned a lot in the process since I own a 461 and wish I would have watched this first hand. You probably hear this all the time but I'm a self-taught chainsaw mechanic and I've only ported three saws so far my 026, 036 pros and 461. Just would like to say thank you very much for everything that you do and for taking the time to make these videos that are very informative and unique. I'm a fourth generation logger that lives in Washington Pacific Northwest Forks to be specific and I've learned a lot of neat tips from different Legend timber fallers on how to squeeze as much power as you can from your saw and I'm with you for not wanting to just give away all your secrets you've been taught, some of them tricks are worth more than gold in my book. If you're ever in my neck of the woods would love to take you on a tour of the company I work for Dahlgren Log Co. and the shop I work at.We're in the process of restoring one of the world's largest yarders,Berger Mk6 and they own both quite impressive if I do say so myself. There's actually a video we recorded some years back that's on RU-vid I believe it's called flying the cats lol we shot a couple 527 cat grapple skidders over a quarter mile across a valley. I'm proud to say I was the one that made the spreader bar that supported carrying those suckers across. Sorry for writing a short novel but I have to say you are the man when it comes to Saw mods hands down and I believe you are going to make it big it's just a matter of time my friend just keep staying positive and keep up the hard work it all pays off in the end at least it always has for me most of the time with some learning curves along the way LOL. God bless and be safe out there, JH P.S. Let me know if you what you think of that short logging video

I'm a Stihl dealer. I combed through tons of literature in owners manuals, service bulletins, training materials and service manuals. The only references to damage from running out of bar oil was damage to the bar and chain. I found nothing that mentioned damage directly to the pump from running out of oil. However, in the service manual for the MS461 under pump installation it says, "- Lubricate the pump piston with STIHL multipurpose grease". As a service tech I have seen plenty of saws with severely burned up chains, bars and chewed up clutch teeth and rim sprockets from customers running without bar oil for extended periods of time. Once refilled the oil pumps are usually fine when I test them. I've also seen plenty of failed oil pumps from overheating when people run their saws with the brake on for extended periods and I've seen oil pumps in fairly new saws that have never ran dry just randomly fail. Not much of an answer I know, I'll call tech line after the weekend and ask them for a more definitive answer. I would like to know too.

Duckworth atv and mx, I have been in the building game for 40 years and got to a stage where my hands would like lock-up with cramps and pain. Had this operation by a hand surgeon where he cut (or as he put it, slashed) the carpal tunnel free from the inside of my hand to release the tension in my palm, on both hands in separate operations. Sounds gruesome, and it is (and a very painful experience) but no more cramps in my fingers, and I can turn a screwdriver again ect ect.

I've also been "mechanically inclined" for the better part of my life, and as such have cut, burned, stretched, bruised, and beaten my hands to the point I would drop things from my hands going numb, and wake up in the morning an hour earlier because I had to run my hands under hot water as soon as I woke up due to the pain. Go get the surgery, do it one hand at a time and it isn't bad at all. I was out in my shop piddling around with stuff the same day after the surgeries. It's not going to get any better.

50 years ago anyone who ported aluminum used rubberized abrasive cones for polishing, available at any good industrial supply store. Brand name is Cratex. They were essentially the consistency of a metal impregnated crayon, and easily broke under minimal pressure, or even with your hand. Probably why we thought they were actually made from clay and called them "crayons". They mount to screw tip mandrels similar to sanding or buffing cones without an extended pilot shaft. Step 1 of polishing would be piloted sanding cones or drums in varying grits prior to using "crayons" for mirror polishing the exhaust.

I cant believe you grind and file parts directly over top of a open crankcase

I have a 372 that I've ported and sha eved the head and made a dome top piston for and deleted the gasket on the crank case to reduce the size of the crank case and i would put it against any saw any time ohh and shaped the combustion chamber so at top dead. Enter there might end up being a open spot the size of your pinky nail

You're obviously very good at what you do but you should RU-vid videos because you enjoy / love doing them not because of money that will come in time. Everyone modify Stihl chainsaw I myself have a 361 Ported and am glad I found your channel. It's the little things. Thank you John

I put the chain catch on the saw side too. That way if it gets stolen it's easier to identify.

I will be sure to mention you the quality of your channel and your overall lack of BS. That goes a long way here. I will also make sure that I mentioned you to my Subs which I only have twelve or thirteen hundred of but I got quite a few loyal guys in there that like to interact so keep it up, I was going to go into the same niche, but once I saw your channel I realized you've already got it covered buddy. A simple mention from somebody with a lot of Subs is enough to kick-start your channel quick. So make sure you're making good friends the guy who kick-started my channel. was aVe. Keep shooting and I'll keep watching

Just want to say John you got a great Channel and you're going to go places with it for sure I still have a small amount of Subs and have been at it for a few years but I'm not very active for different reasons. The biggest break I got was when aVe mentioned a saying that I use in my videos from while back when I was way more active for a bunch of different reasons. My channel will be back up and running but I'm having some spinal cord issues so I'll still be out of the loop for a little while. Keep doing what you doing man!

Great video! I love saws, but I don’t use one very much. I do ride and work on dirt bikes and your video illustrates porting truly well. I’m watching all. Good luck on the Lambo!

Can't quite believe I watched all that, but reckon you deserve it 😀 You have some mad skills and knowledge. Respect. RU-vid ain't easy. Can't tell you how many times I've thought of getting into it and failed for one reason or another. Content and camera work. It's multiple skills at once. Keep on keeping on and, yup, people are 100% goofy! 😂 Peace from Scotland

I've ported a few saws myself and have loved everyone of them. My favorite is my 440 with a big bore piston and cylinder from a 660

A 440/660 hybrid... Holy shitballs i was just talking about this the other day ... to pull that off thats some serious next level ability... did you swap the crank? I will try about any build but even i was like "nope" when I looked at it closer ... do you have any pictures or videos of it?

@@johnscustomsaws Oh, I know the feeling, but doing is learning. When I started studying porting and I got to the point where I though I knew a little something, I had a rude awaking when I started on my first build. I had a great saw builder step in and answered a lot of questions about why some saw builders were doing things that went against my common sense. My common sense was right. Success was a really great reward.
