Single-hand sailing a Catalina 42 sailboat from Lake Michigan to the Caribbean requires a commitment to fitness, good health, and sticking to an exercise routine to avoid injuries; or rehab out of them. Lots of fun on the water when health is good, injuries are avoided, or a path back to being injury free is clear and attainable. Sailing on a boat for any length of time creates competitive priorities that can make health and healing secondary - don't let this happen to you. Skipping workouts causes unforeseen health and fitness issues - and if working out is part of your normal management of aches and pains - you've got to find a way to stick to your healthy priorities and exercise. Multiple injuries were impossible for me to work through without adequate exercise - causing a loss of muscle, strength and agility. Stepping off the boat for surgery was part of the answer.
