Windy Florida greets us with historic St. Augustine - a great harbor. Even at a secure mooring, prep is needed for gale-force winds. The beauty of St. Augustine attracts crowds to its magnificent architecture and history. A real milestone is reached during our journey while sailing a Catalina 42. A few lessons for preparing for a storm on a mooring buoy, as well as the excitement of sailing solo and enjoying the adventure.

Hey Dennis You always thank us for joining ypu on this journey and I really think that I should be thanking you for the time you put in to bring us along. Alway look forward to the Stir Crazy notice of a new video. I have followed from the great lakes and will throughout. Hopefully we can "race" our Catalinas from one island to the next one day. Thanks again.

Funny, like turning in an English essay, I always see tweaks i should have made before publication. My lines on the buoy were old - so I went to a marine supply store for new ones. Whew, I have never been so grateful for access to goods. Thank you for being Crew along on the way on this one.

Hey, Jeff - You can use whatever gaffs I make to keep our favorite Pontoon Popeye out of trouble. Thanks again for hopping aboard!

Wow, Anne! Thank you so much for your kind support and wishes. The wind has not inconvenienced me yet for departure to the Bahamas but the rubber is meeting the road soon. I'll need fair winds from the south to cross the Gulf Stream. Fingers crossed 😊

Hey, David - RU-vid messaging is acting up and i can only see part of your response. Yes, a halyard/anchor lift to the deck could also work. Bigger fetch will generate larger waves, so i may need to try a few options - all of yours are good. Heading back out tomorrow - and may be on a buoy, so I'll mull over how all the new equipment can work best when the weather isn't. It's a journey, for sure - thanks again for joining me and the rest of the Crew, David.

Happy sailing…we’ll be watching!

Heh! Tony - can't we all be a bit thick at times!? . . . 😅 I wish I could have gotten their faces clearly in the shot . . . Maybe an eye roll would have made it even better. Anyway, I'm glad you smiled- and I'm happy you are along and so kind in your appraisal. May all your boating adventures provide joy atop aaaaand sub surface. 😂

I am happy - for sure - but that Golden State snow would be a nice seasonal change, too. Tahoe area seems to be the place to ski this year - and it's one of the iconic ski destinations I have not yet visited.

Dennis, good chafing gear, snubber, and perhaps using an all chain rode whilst on anchor might make you feel safer, and more importantly sleep sounder, well, not too soundly! Stern anchor sometimes helps with tidal situations? Since you have a radar system on board, I think you can set an alarm in the event the anchor slips and doesn’t set properly..

Yep - no good weather window for me prior to January 7, it seems. Plenty of miles and prep before then. Thank you for joining me in the overcast and cold climate of Florida - it can't last!

I’m a fellow Catalina owner and just started watching/subscribed. You may consider dropping your anchor a few feet into the water to prevent the mooring lines from snagging/chafing. Place some chafing gear next to the chain. I look forward to future videos!

Hey, David - Thanks for the tips . The Mantus anchor is new to me. Flipping it over in challenging conditions may work if it doesn't rattle around . . . I also came close to sacrificing a water hose to reduce chafe on a mooring buoy. Thanks for being part of this journey - I hope something along the way helps you plan or avoid 😅

Dropping the anchor is a very creative option. I'm a but worried about snagging the buoy or fouling lines when wind and tides are counter - but I may! Thank you.

@@dennismckee7934 Yes, would definitely depend on conditions. You could always lift the anchor onto the deck with a halyard. I’ve heard that most mooring failures result from anchors being left on the bow during storms. Sleep is important 😀

Hello Dennis, I'm heading south singlehanded on my Catalina 36 just a bit ahead of you - on a mooring in Vero Beach until after the holidays right now. If big wind is in the forecast and I'm on a mooring I've been flipping my 45 pound mantus upside down in the anchor roller. When the boat starts pitching better to have the rollbar pushing against the lines than have the edges of the plow cut into them. Hope to cross paths with you on the way south. Merry Christmas, hope there is a sailors potluck happening in St Augustine!
@dennismckee7934
@dennismckee7934 7 месяцев назад
I thought about that - thank you! My new lines never quite came in contact - but I think in larger waves it could. I will take your advice and flip the ferrous in future fury. Dang - lots of wind lately, eh? Yes, let's have a coffee if we cross paths. Good luck and thanks for the intel from a few days ahead.
