The Bahamas have been our goal for soooo long -- and we arrive -- finally!! Sailing a Catalina 42 from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to West End, Bahamas, and beyond. Whew - join me if this is a trip you are considering or if you just like to see coral avoided in shallow water. A perilous journey with lots of pointers. The Abaco Islands offer a bigger safety net than the Exumas for those travelling plenty of miles before arriving 180 miles off shore from Florida. Narrow underwater channels require accurate electronics, good waterway guides, and some luck. Fun in rain, clouds, sun and dark - what an adventure . . .

You two are so sweet! Whew - obviously you found a good place to hide from the worst of the wind down there. I'll head over to Man-O-War tomorrow for some exploration . . . But this dang wind is a hindrance. You've got the right boat and the right crew to explore - you rock! Thanks for checking in - and I too hope our paths cross again. Keep off the speed bumps out there in the Exumas. 😅

You’ve arrived!! So happy for you😊. Glad you are safe. Let’s keep it that way🏝⛵️ 🐠🐬🌞 On a side note… we currently have 4-5 inches of fresh snow on the railing of the deck. So I will be living through your sunny adventures

Hey! Annette and Bill. We were next to you at the marina. Having fun watching you from Norman's Cay. Also fun to see ourselves and our boat in your video. Continued success in your travels! Maybe we'll bump into you again at some point.

Well, good neighbors are always tough to find - and you are kind - keep out of the strong winds, may your anchor provide you comfort, and the seas treat you with kindness on your journey. Fun adventures on the water - stay safe - and thank you so much for following mine. I hope we do cross paths again. Take care.

Hah! The boat performed well, thank goodness. I'm 185 miles from Florida - windy a lot of the time - and I'm adjusting. You will see no bows from me until I've made the circuit - but I am soooo glad you are keeping an eye on my progress. Thanks again l.

That’s the one disadvantage of single-handed sailing, watching for coral heads, and heading between a partly submerged reef. It gets the ticker pumping, that’s for sure. Especially if your timing is slightly out and the sun is directly on the bow :) Happy days.

Hi! I am safe - thank you - it's an extra windy season this year that has up ended lots of plans for boaters trying to get to the Bahamas from Florida an move around the islands. Lots of folks playing it safe because high winds seem to come up frequently - two out of five days or so. Bouncy and a bit worrisome, at times, but adventurous. I'm headed out for some exploring of some famous beaches tomorrow. I'll get some sunny drone shots and give you something to smile about in the chilly north. Thanks for being a great crew member, Danette.

Congrats! The Bahamas are awesome. I spent 10 days sailing in the Abacos a number of years ago. I remember highlights for me was visitng Hopetown on Elbow Cay, Nippers on Guana Cay, and having conch salad in Alicetown. Lots of snorkleing, and enjoying the scenery. Have a wonderful time.

Hey, Nippers and Grabbers will appear soon - thanks for the tips. I am still a bit nervous about snorkeling and sharks . . . But it will happen. Thanks again for being part of the plan - tips are always welcome, too.

Funny you should say they are open for business - I'll tell ya, the recovery here from hurricane Dorian is looooong from over and I'll feature that element down the road a bit. The devastation is like nothing I have ever seen. Yes, I am here as a small contributor to a tiny slice of recovery business. The resilience of the folks here is inspiring.

Luke! Great hearing from you, Sir. Yes,, it was like skiing those monster moguls on the steeps on the other side of the valley at Sun Peaks. There just were no signs - like there are at the top - to warn me off. Actually, I did sweat a bit but never came close to toppling, as far as I know. Heading back that way, I will really let the tide dictate, and that dynamic will add some drama to my normal planning around the right winds. I hope your summer break finds you with all the BC snow your family needs for a wonderful vacation, if your plans can take you that way this year. Me? I'll miss the slopes but this adventure is bringing me plenty of other personal awards. Good luck and thank you again for checking in.

5’ of water! Damn Dennis I was sweating bullets just watching you…sheesh. How am I going to get a 5.8’ draft through that channel next winter!

Hey, I was told that nine feet is the norm at high tide but it just wasn't happening. Tides differ through cycles but the call is tough. On your own, not a lot of choices - north around Memory Rock is easier with help. Also, I wanted to check in at West End. If you do Memory with help, you can push farther and check in later. Food for thought. I too sweat bullets, Buddy - thanks for hanging in there with me.

Hah! Harry was in compliance with all standards for health and hygiene, I'm sure. I had some conch in Marsh Harbour that wasn't as good as Harry's - might have just been a tough creature. Coch shells get dumped here along the coast like car tires in junk yards. Hundreds of thousands must have bern emptied of conch - they put up 'no dumping' signs like the backroads of Oakland County. Thanks for the note and considerate cautionary insight, Dude.

Fantastic Dennis I remember the feeling as we sailed out of the Gulfstream and into the clear Bahamian shallows all the way from Toronto. Good on you as most don't accomplish this single handed. SV Sandii Derek C400 Ps I keep wishing you would acquire a dinghy. 😊

I put the little crane/houst on the back - came with the boat - in case I need a dinghy in the Bahamas . . . I may . . . I loved Lake Ontario. You Toronto folks have it gooooood😊

Glad you made the trip across and survived the raw conch on that cutting board that looked sus. That was the highest risk activity yet. Wishing you the best of luck on the next run!

Yep - but there really wasn't much choice this time. Skinny weather window. Worked out. North of me, boats got caught in lightning and had some scary events.
