I have never served and this makes my stomach sour. I cant even imagine what shit like this does to service people...

When I was a brand new private straight outta basic, i got off the plane at Sea-Tac on the way to JBLM and there was a guy who tried to call me out for "stolen valor" because I didnt have my unit patch on (which he should have known why since I had yet to actually get to reception/in processing at my unit) and all I did was pull out my CAC and show it to him. Ge then changed his whole demeanor and just started giving me some solid advice about starting out at my first unit. Went from a very awkward encounter, to an awesome convo that I'll never forget even today.

I fully understand the lack of respect. However I deal with disability in my line of work and so many of these are screaming signs of mental health, it doesn’t justify it, but it may help to understand why people do such things.

Am I weird for not saying, "Thank you for your service" to veterans and active military people I meet? Maybe it's because my grandpa served in WWII, and my dad in Vietnam, so if someone says they served, that's par for the course to me. It may also be because it sounds disingenuous, a platitude of sorts. I'd rather thank you for your service by buying you a beer or some ammo, y'know? 'Course with fakers around, probably best not to so freely give stuff, even thanks. I'm a RSO at my local range, and we let military and police shoot for free, but they gotta present ID, be it their CAC, VA card, badge, whatever. Gotta be photo ID. I mean, it only saves them the $10 range fee, but we're strict about it as the range is 100% volunteer run and non-profit, so someone cheating us out of $10 hurts more than it normally would. I definitely have great respect for anyone who served in the armed forces, especially those who saw combat like my dad. My grandpa was the quartermaster for the US in Cairo, Egypt during WWII, and never saw combat, but support roles are just as important as those on the front lines. Can't fight if you don't have food, ammo, cleaning kits, fuel, replacement clothes, etc. My dad coordinated and directed artillery in Vietnam. While he was a tech sergeant (rank no longer in use by the army, now called sergeant first class) and primarily worked in the command center where they did calculations for firing solutions (most were unarmed in there, btw), he did have other duties that were rotational, such as guard duty. He obviously was in the shit, because you don't get the Bronze Star for courage by directing artillery. Apparently on one of his guard duty rotations, his post was overrun during an enemy offense, but he held his ground despite having the means and opportunity to break contact, refusing to abandon his post while he had injured allies in the foxhole with him. It doesn't shame me to admit there are men like my dad, far more badass than I. I'm glad such people exist, and if you're one of them, you don't have my thanks, you have my deepest respect.

When I was an MP starting in 1998, the MOS was 95B10 & 95B20. Ft Benning was NEVER a training station for MPs. Ft McClellan (Anniston, Alabama) & Ft Leonardwood, Missouri. My class was last to graduate in McClellan in 1999. Then it was turning into DHS training depot. I'm pretty sure it's closed altogether now though from what I hear. I think there was about 164 or 165 recruits in my company. But normally in basics, it's like 80 or 90 recruits. I'd do it all over again at same place again. I loved it... HOOAH!

Believe it or not. There is more stolen valor amongst people who did serve in some branch of the military, that claim they did shit that they never even got close to. Cleaning a bulkhead of the coast of california turns into "I'm a navy sniper that killed children and i gots the ptsd.."

I met a client one time who came into my office wearing a t-shirt with the seal of each branch of the armed forces on the front with his last name above each seal. I asked him if he had family members who served in each branch and he proceeded to tell me that he has personally served full terms in every branch of the military and was honorably discharged from each one. I kicked him out and haven't heard from him since.

I served in the civil war in 2019. Crazy war. I’m not stolen valor at all 😂

I didn’t get a good look at your tattoos, but by the way you carry yourself and reaction, I’m going on a limb and say a Ranger or Green Beret but I’m betting on Ranger due to your reactions to the “Rangers”. I served 10 yrs as a 74D. That’s why I enjoy watching vets react to these, especially in the SF Divisions

I've worn my old tri-color desert uniform I wore in Iraq during OIF3 and some of the TA-50 I was able to keep as my Halloween costume years back, but I ALWAYS made sure to have a copy of my 214 on me (along with my old CLS card even) to flash to anybody that questioned me on my claims. Saved me from an awkward talk a couple of times.

I served in the Army for just under 3 years 20 years ago. I don't remember a lot of shit, but I do remember my MOS and the every unit I was in, from training until I was medically discharged. But honestly stolen valor doesn't really bother me. We live in a free country, people can claim whatever they want. Fraud and causing harm aside
