I have a suggestion about Dr. K's guide. I think the course diagram with video titles and paths should be made available for all, not just for people who paid. It would help with 2 things: 1) Seeing that there is a video which discusses your specific problem convinces to buy much more than just knowing that the course is, for example, about social anxiety in general. 2) Many paths are interleaved. Seeing this in detail would convince those in doubt to buy more than one course or even all 4. It's very frustrating to buy something and understand after a while that it's not enough.

Is that a thing like a was concious about this FOMO thing without knowing it when I was young, like 5 years old, so I was like, Ok its good the other one has something I dont, I dont need it, but I can do something on my own and connect with peoples if I want to, at the age of 7 I was loving to teardown things, also im really self concious and I love to see myself from outside of view, also how my enviroment works and analyzing whats happening.

It's unreal how much figuring out your own values and goals magically offloads so much pressure from our lives. Everything becomes much simpler once you know who you are and where you're going. It's hard to discover what those things are, but the best step to take is the next step. Meet yourself where you're at, and go meditate already!!!

True. I've been noticing this with my depression, when I don't feel any desire or drive I need to continue functioning based off my external identity and follow the society's path and struggling with that just and other stuff gives me fomo for many of the relevant things. But when I'm driven I'm happy with being able to drive my own life.

It's easy to find direction. It's hard to consider your desired direction viable if it's not one of the few railroads society offers by default. Especially if people are constantly telling you how unrealistic your desired path in life is, or if you want to go against certain values people generally hold which you personally think are wrong.
@bruhdabones

That experience of FOMO is so wildly different from my own. I don’t care about living someone else’s life or outsourcing my goals and values. I have those things internally. My FOMO came from the fact that I am extroverted and value time with friends. I also had some insecurity about whether my friends actually liked me. Whenever my friends gathered without inviting me, it felt like betrayal. As if we weren’t real friends. I would be sitting at home, my social battery draining instead of charging due to the isolation. That’s my experience and that is why my experience of FOMO doesn’t line up with anything in this video.

I don't think that's the case, or at least it wasn't for me. For example - when I commissioned a tailor to make me a really cool cultist-like robe and then took some pictures in it and posted them online - they didn't get much attention. And it didn't bother me at all. I thought "well, whatever, *I* think they're cool, and that's all that matters". And I'm generally very insecure about myself and can be succeptible to the outside influence, but when you've done something cool, something you've been craving to do for a while - you will feel good regardless of how others react to it

I totally agree. In fact, my husband and I deleted our social medias because we started noticing people becoming (and straight up saying) that they were jealous of what we were doing. Not happy or excited for us, just jealous. So, we went 3 years with no social media, and we were able to focus all our energy on making a huge move onto a homestead that we had been planning for over 7 years. We recently reinstated our facebooks but only to keep track of local farmer's markets and community activities in the new town we live in, and that's all it's going to be for. Having all the extra time away from social media and putting it into bettering ourselves and our lives instead has made things 10x more enjoyable. We are even considering having a kid, and we used to be staunchly against having any of our own until now. 😊

Actually, I find that "doing more of what you want in your life in a small way" doesn't just apply to FOMO, it also applies to big dreams and why people have them (or at least speaking for myself: why I have them). I was and to some extent am "struggling" with two things in my life: 1) I have big dreams (somewhat realistic things like wanting to live in a tiny house and travel the world to completely unrealistic stuff like secretly wanting to be able to use magic) 2) My life used to feel very purposeless And I realised at some point that that dream of metaphorically or literally being an "adventurer" comes from me wanting to be more adventurous in my daily life. And it doesn't even have to be as "big" as going camping, it can just be: walking a different route to the supermarket than the one I'm already comfortable with. Or next time I'm going out eating not picking my favorite restaurant again, but trying a different one. (learning new skills also works really well for me). And the more I do that the less purposeless my life feels and the less I depend on "that big trip" to magically solve all problems in my life. I'm still gonna follow my dreams (except for the magic I guess, sadge) because traveling the world sounds like fun, but it's not supposed to magically solve all my problems any more.

I quit a lot of social media during the pandemic (because I was having problems with doomscrolling, not necessarily fomo), but I also found that I have some unrealistic goals where this framework can be applied (e.g. goals/dreams where I fix EVERYTHING that's wrong with the world). I can fulfill the value need with very small things without feeling like a failure because I can't do absolutely everything like I would like to.

Validating as always doc. This vid came out at a great time as I have just come back from a weekend camping/hiking trip I went on alone in celebration of my 26th birthday. I felt compelled to do it as the reality set in that my dangerously small social circle was too preoccupied with other responsibilities and priorities to celebrate with me. I also struggle with low self worth and, even though I deeply crave quality-time with my loved ones, convinced myself that it would not be worth their time to spend their valuable weekend in discomfort from driving, tent camping, and hiking 30+ miles with me. To be honest I booked the trip out of spite, almost to prove that I can have a good time on my own. And that's what ended up happening. Hours and hours in nature, along trails with no other humans for miles. I can't remember the last time I felt so connected with myself. While at some points I wondered if it might have been more fun with a companion, I realized at the end of the hike that even for me it was very physically taxing, so I guess I learned that sometimes going on solo adventures offers unparalleled flexibility. No other things to consider; the only limits are your own. It's only been a week but I definitely sense an improvement. Previously, the only times I would do anything is when invited out with the group, which I was always happy to do but when there was no invite it would wreck my whole weekend. Now I'm slightly more content in my solitude, and find myself more open to exploring new opportunities. 10/10, would recommend 👍

Oh my god, I figured this out last year. I no longer buy games on impulse. I don't watch trailers anymore and just ask around for fun movies from friends. I actually FEEL like I'm getting to properly know ME. My individuality as a person has become so much more in line with my subconscious, that even my confidence has skyrocketed because this mindset has essentially grounded me into my own shoes. FOMO is a marketing trick designed to make your mind go blank and consume to fit in. The irony is, you'll chase the endless and souless media consumption life, and then have FOMO for all the wasted years spent on trying to keep up with others.

I am currently working on my masters thesis, spending even more time alone. I usually write at home, bc the library is too noisy. Ironically, writing in a café or in the same room with my boyfriend gaming is fine. Also, I am afraid that I won't get to live my life when working as a teacher and having children, so there is the time aspect too. And also I feel like I need to make up for bad decisions in the past. That creates a lot of pressure to make the best of the moment. Which is usually a good approach, but right now doesn't feel freeing as usual. On the contrary, it makes me tense. And this is so much more about emotions than anything else.

Hey man could you talk about "enlightenment" or, in more normal terms, the realization that the thought world is an illusion and that we're not our thoughts and how that helps in day to day life and how this aligns with science? Seeing that the mind world is an illusion feels like getting out of the matrix and I had a few glimpses of that, it's quite awesome, but it's also so normal that it's such a shame that we can't see it, it's such a basic knowledge to see that it's not real. Seems to be worth pursuing. That could impact a lot of what you're saying as then seeing the "8 billion" people will be clearly seen as thought concept and not ultimately real and so on. I'm curious to see your more down to earth perspective, I'm tired of listening to this spiritual delusional jargon.

I think the condition I have is the feeling of not making enough memories with my friends and that's why i strongly feel obligated to go to parties/clubs when those aren't what I really want to do. Do you have any suggestions as to solve my issue? I know making new friends is a solution but i find that challenging; at least at this moment.

For me, I get a little upset if I see that my friend group decided to hang out without me, and I do sometimes get sad about missing out when something sounds like it was really cool, but I don’t really get FOMO for day-to-day stuff. Weirdly, I do get it about death though? The idea that I will miss out on stuff after I die (say for example, a tv show I would’ve loved) really upsets me. I’d assume that it’s something to do with the fact that while I’m alive, there’s some degree to which I have the ability to attend these events I’m missing out on (even if to actually attend them I would suddenly need to win the lottery, or quit my job, or something else drastic). Whereas when I’m dead, that’s it. I won’t even really ‘miss out’ on these events so much as I’ll just ‘miss’ them. Does anyone else experience this?

This is very true. Most people are doing real boring stuff on the regular. I use to painfully try to follow around with that. Hanging around at bars. But I don't drink..and I am always just like. Wanting to go do something and theydont wanna. But one day I just ran away and started doing all the extreme sports.. flying planes. Living it up alone. Now I got a skater crew I surf with the boys and do all the things I dreamed of. Have friends that are a little too positive.. like I am.. and aren't always wanting to stay inside and drink. I can't believe I use to fear missing out on THAT and now I have friends that I can do active healthy things with.. that agree with my level of ambition. That wanna pursue such thing. You gotta just move on. Find others who have your level of ambition

You know what's funny is that once you stop having FOMO you also stop carrying about inducing FOMO on someone else and you just end up living your life. You don't have the urge for someone to be jealous about how you do it, in fact you just want everyone to be as happy and content as you are. And this is how you know that you truly let go

The example with the child makes so much sense to me. I think we often forget though what looks fun on the outside may not be that fun for those involved. There’s a lot of fake smiles and happiness online. They could be struggling with something we know nothing about. I usually get fomo when it’s a nice day out, but I can’t enjoy it in that moment. I live up north so our nice days our limited and they make me feel good.

This is a great video and has very important lessons. But I don’t like the reference to the reptilian brain very much. I know it’s used as a metaphor but it’s not clearly used that way. Even then we can create better metaphors based on the information we have now about the brain. Anyway, it’s a great video, very helpful like all the others in this channel. Thanks Dr K !

Great points except the part about inducing FOMO into other people. If anything that seems very egotistical that you would want others to feel FOMO. No one should feel FOMO in my opinion, so you shouldn't contribute to it. I myself have not been on social media for years now and I feel so much more free, like a weight has been lifted off of my shoulders. Now I just live my life how I want to and be positive towards other people as much as possible

Lots of smart words, but the fundamental problem is not knowing what is it I both want to do *and* be good at. This is really confusing cause and effect. The root cause is lack of direction in life; everything else, including fomo, is the effect of that.

I think it's also worth mentioning that FOMO can be completely solitary too. For example, you might feel obligated to keep watching a show you don't enjoy, or you might worry/stress about missing RU-vid uploads from your subscriptions. Are these not ultimately rooted in a fear of missing out on something?

I feel this is similar to how I feel FOMO, and it results in me buying more video games than I can play. I have FOMO -- I want to have this game physically so I can get back some of my money if I don't like it, or preserve it if I do. Or so I can hang on to it and experience it without it ever becoming a vintage game I can no longer afford to try later when I actually have the time. The problem is I don't have time to read all the books I want, play all the video games I want, or learn all the cool things I want. I think maybe I just need to figure out what's really important to me and try to work on my self-control, though it is heavily influenced by FOMO, and missing out on cool games in the past for all the above reasons.

I've had similar experiences, and I think (for me at least) the reason was wanting to FEEL something while playing games or watching shows. I was trying to live through the characters on screen, because my life didn't really have any direction or sense, I had a lot of unfulfilled needs. I was always looking at the next game like "wow maybe this will finally make me happy" but it snowballed into a bunch of impulse buying and a large backlog. If you're feeling similar to this I'd think you should try to find out what you want to feel when playing a game or watching a show, or looking at what made you really emotional or what resonated with you in them. Then apply what Dr. K suggested in the vid. Like for example, when I reached the last (true) ending while playing Nier Automata, I got really emotional during the credits sequence (if you played you know what I mean), and it was due to the feeling of companionship that it made me feel, and I think it's because I really didn't have true friends back then (an unfulfilled need). Sorry if my English was bad. Hope I helped someone!

@@zemiq1982 I can't deal with all of your problems but at least "missing out on cool games in the past" is totally can be dealt with. I bet you'll be surprised to know that I'm writing this from Windows7 having only ~3y.o. hardware so I can play modern games[if it's at least theoretically possible] while having almost 100% compatibility with all "older" ones I like and want to have access to. Not sure about "win11 specific" hardware, but you always can buy used "older" hardware/separate laptop for such things while keeping your main PC up to date. Ofc eventually(I'm not gonna hurry this time tho) I'll go dual-boot with Win10 and when that will be impossible - will keep Win7 on my "gaming" laptop. If you are not familiar with tech as well yourself - just ask a friend/"order" picking needed hadware and setting up older OS for you. There are *much more* possible than newspaper sites and it's "experts" tells you. P.S. Tho it may seems "childish" now, I remember when I was a kid and internet as as thing haven't existed in my life, I was *really* regretting missing even single episode on Naruto which I loved back than... Only to ~4years later to discover that none of these "old" shows are "lost" because "TV air has ended" and they are in fact preserved on special places by many enthusiasts. I guess it may count as first "turning point" of doubting about people calling some things "impossible"(and also viewing them by myself)[tho I guess you can already conclude that if I managed to stick with my loved OS up to this time despite "unsupported"(c) hardware and "missing drivers"(c) XD]

I'd say that at quite time[and not only]-limited conventions' case it has a bit more sense than what was this video about. I'd say it's more about planning/time-management. Like, ofc you don't want to feel hurried all the time when you came there, but at the same time "stucking" on the one spot for the whole day while you could've met people you wanted not worth it that much on bigger scale. Like, usually I read all program beforehand and see what I can found interesting, whether it overlaps with each other and if so - what I want to attend more. And despite tough schedule I'd say I managed to get 80-90% of photos I wanted, seeing near same amount of performances and also having time to "mindlessly roam around" among souvenirs tables "wasting" as much time as I want because I know in advance at which time I should be in the next place. Tho maybe it's worth notice that I was attending "solo" so my main purpose was to fulfill everything I want. Tho ofc there were +-acquaintances who perceived that convention as "just another cause to get drunk"(to put it rough)/to hang out with their "stack" meaning [missing out on] that specific convention wasn't bothering them that much in the first place. Welp... It's not for me. I can't treat once-per-year(or even rarer...) event as "just another 'reason' to get drunk", it can be any [other] weekend for such a purpose [imho].
