I'm a terrible artist that mangles stick figures but I love this video; it does such a great job explaining and breaking things down in a way that even a derp like me can understand.

30 seconds in and I’m already running from my responsibilities of learning perspective 😀

Ok, I appreciate this. I have seen countless things about structuring the face by breaking it into 1/3rds. But this video does a good job putting it all in one place. Funnily enough I stumbled upon a lot of the knowledge you talked about with eye perspective entirely by accident. I used to drop acid and draw and due to drawing countless jibbering and shifting eyes I naturally picked up on the curvature. Honestly it started with me drawing the eye as if it were a drop of water the hadn't broken surface tension. Still though this put it in a much more understandable form. Edit: dude I audibly said woah when you showed the pizza profile in practice on that drawing. My brain is programed to accept the first one due to unhealthy amounts of anime watching, but as soon as you did that proper triangle shape it felt human. It felt like it gave the guy soul immediately. This also gets at something I realized while reading manga. Being able to draw from life makes your art much more dynamic and gives it weight. The illustrations in vagabond literally feel like they have weight to them, as if they are coming out of the page. And it's because it uses all the skills of drawing from real life, whilst still conforming to the aesthetic of manga.

I love how Sam gives us art advices, roasts Kooleen, studies wlop's work, scolds us aggressively yet gently at the same time. Multitasker 😌

Perspective really matters it gives life to the art 100%

I think the most important skills to develop as an artist are: Structure, Anatomy, and Perspective; once you get those three things done, you can experiment with some color, values, rendering, etc.

I feel like I knew the curved line thing for the eyeline when looking up in the back of my head, but seeing it explicitly explained like this gave me like a lightbulb moment. Thanks so much!! That perspective/no perspective back and forth on the sketch toward the end reminded me of Egyptian hieroglyphics. The eyes in hieroglyphics have a very similar look to the 'no perspective' version.

This is so helpful. Its so silly how obvious you would think it would be but when drawing it just doesn't come to mind atleast for me. This is great thank you so much and I will do my best to apply it to my future drawings

Thanks Sam I have been thinking about this problem but wasn't sure that subtle details can make things ugly to great. After following your advice about studying enemy skull for better stylized art. I went to hell and dissected my enemies from musles to bones for 2-3 months and after I got back from my journey my art took a leap from 2/10 to 7/10 so please continue to provide wisom for obvious but subtle things like that and this. I was afraid of breaking face and eye shape in perspective now this gave me courage. Now I will be leaving for hell again to study my enemies and see how diffrent their body look from diffrent angles.

The tutorial I’ve been waiting for - Thank you Sam ! Now please keep going ….- tips on how to figure out how the shape and size of the eyes change as the angle of the face/head moves. PLEASE! Huge struggle - especially the FARTHER eye vs the closer eye.
