Wash bones, cook up to 20-24 hours, in pressure cooker it takes 4-6 hours. If not sure in bones/beef quality, you can boil for first 5-10 minutes and throw/pour out the broth/water, and continue cooking bones in new water. I cook beef or sheep bones. If you add skin, tail etc, you will get more jelly like broth, as there are much collagen in them.. During last 30-60minutes of cooking I add salt and seasonings like coriander seeds, pepper seeds(white, green, red or black), bay leaf etc to make broth tasty. I never get tired of drinking 1-2 cup of bone broth. It is fatty and tastes delicious. If you need not bone broth but meat stock (Dr. Natasha Campbell with gaps diet) , then I guess need to add meat and parts like ligaments, tendons etc in addition to bones.
@Nellis202

Keep in mind that bone broth, like collagen powder, is NOT a complete protein. You can easily remedy this by the addition of a hard boiled egg or even some good dairy product(Greek yogurt).

Muddled. 1. Actually, collagen consumption results in the absorption of bioactive peptides, which travel in the bloodstream, and result in positive effects. Not "magic", but still cool. 2. "Deaminated" isn't the greatest term. When we consume any collagen (raw, cooked, hydrolyzed), it has to go thru digestion. The long chains of AA's making up the collagen get *mostly* broken up into individual AA's. But some ultra-short peptides remain. They get absorbed into serum in small quantities, and end up affecting our own cells (skin, cartilage, etc) 3. There are 29 different collagen types. But he's right that Type 1 is by far the most common, followed by 2 & 3. 4. It's true that Glycine, Proline, & Hydroxyproline are the most abundant. But there are many other AA's in collagen products. 5. AA's don't get "broken down." Proteins & peptides (shorter proteins) do.

It depends on the broth and the collagen supplement. If it’s made from real bones and cartilage from a true family farm. Then it’s doing a lot for your skin, joints and overall health. Collagen supplements are very trendy right now so there’s a lot of fraud going on. Studies show that collagen supplementation prompts the body to produce more collagen (meaning the collagen you consume is not incorporated into your tissues, but somehow it does prompt your body to make more of it). I use Sports Research Collagen (the regular or the marine version are good).

Actually, you can give your kids collagen. In Jello. Which is made with 100% gelatin (and fruit flavoring of course). Gelatin is collagen, from bovine sources. I bet most people don't know that! I don't know how bioavailable it is in this form though. I put plain gelatin in my berry or fruit pies. It soaks up the extra juices as it cools and sets. This makes the pie easier to cut serve when cold. Mind you, I don't eat those pies anymore since I'm on keto. But gosh they were good! Ever wonder why they feed you Jello in the hospital? I hear that fruit juices are not as good as one might think due to the high content of fructose/sugar. It is said that it’s best to eat whole fruit. Vegetable juice on the other hand is more acceptable

I actually buy Paleo valley super food bars . 9grams of protein from grass fed bone broth protein. I prefer the apple Cinnamon. They are not cheap but they offer a discount for auto ship every month or every other month. I save 30% this way and I also buy grass fed beef and turkey sticks from them and I buy enough to get free shipping on the entire order! 👍

I'm brand new to learning about collagen, I'm 38 and want to use it mainly because I still play basketball 4-5 a week and looking for added support for my joints etc. I've seen different types of collagen online, what type of collagen should be used for constant jumping, playing basketball.

What's the difference? Collagen powder is just freeze-dried bone broth, cooked 24 hours and even organic (at least the one the I bought).

True collagen is somewhat difficult to digest, that's why they hydrolize it. Gellatin also works - it's like a hydrolized collagen.

Type 2 is from cow hide trimmings and scraps from tanning industry. Even if it was grass fed cows, the hides are treated with chemicals because of rot. I haven't found a company who says they test the Type 2 collagen for heavy metals.

@@KatGomer pretty sure the collagen is extracted with boiling water. I don't think some more hot water will hurt it but I could be wrong.

I’m not sold on any tablets , powders , vitamins , any of that stuff. Just eat nutrient dense food. They didn’t have all this money making stuff for how many years ? And many many healthy people today don’t use any of this stuff. So to me it’s simply about making a dollar. Not necessary at all.
