This company’s sell status not product, since a lot of people have very bad mental health, buy thing that cannot afford to impress people that they don’t like.

I started working in a phone store last year. And in my country, having the lastest phone on the market means you're above everyone, despite the fact you probably took out a loan for it and you sold your car to buy it. What amazes me is that 40-50 year olds are the ones looking for the lastest and newest phones, despite not being able to find where their gallery is (true story lol). Meanwhile I'm sitting with my Samsung A10 4G with 4GB of RAM, doing the same thing they are gonna use the phone for (browsing social media in my free time). I always hated the stigma around consumerism in the tech industry. Imo, probably less than 80% of the people buying the lastest phones could use the maximum potential it provides them, stop wasting money lads.

Changing phones every year is very stupid. I still use a Xiaomi Mi 9, a phone I bought in 2019, that's about 4.5 - 5 years of usage. At this point, the phone is still capable, comparable to mid-range phones of today but it's a bit long in the tooth. It's about time I upgrade to a Samsung S24 / Xiaomi 14 / iPhone 15 non-pro model and keep that for another 5 years, haven't decided which yet.

I agree as a programmer. I think that not many people who upgrade has the feature set a new phone brings as a spotlight when getting a new phone. Upgrading should come when you need a feature that your current phone doesn't support, like Macro. Only when you need it. The difference between those who get the phone as a status symbol and those who need the phones for their line of work, for example, is staggering. People really need to think about where they spend their money.

I bought my Redmi note 8 pro 4 years ago. Redmi stopped giving Android and ui updates for this phone like 2 years ago. Lately i got bored using the same ui and same Android 11. Then i came across the custom rom thing and i installed pixel experience 13 plus on my Redmi note 8 pro which works pretty well and i changed my phone case to a new one. My friends asked that i got a new phone. And in my opinion my phone becomes very new to use and its well optimised i haven't noticed any bugs except some camera issues which are not that important. My battery life also improved a lot compared to my old rom.

I completely agree with you. When we were discussing, I felt like we shared common views. Most of my friends upgrade just to show off. It's good to understand these concepts at a young age.

I just enjoy the hobby, playing about with new phones and now I have the S24 Ultra. I think if you are financially stable and can afford to do that then there isn't a problem. What I think is a problem, like you've mentioned, is when upgrade just to brag about having the latest iPhone and to fit in. I know this is a big thing in the US especially amongst teens and their iPhones. The company point is far enough but at the end of the day anything you do with your money is going to a company who doesn't care about you regardless.

Very good point, but it's not easy to fully embrace the idea when we live in a society that drives us to consumerism 24/7, but when you finally understand it, you stop chasing false and superficial gratification, and you feel a kind of peace with the choices you make. Upgrading every 4-5 years was my preference but phones now last longer so I am going to try and keep my 15 Pro as long as I can (FYI, upgraded from 4 year 11 Pro). Another reason is that cost of living is all time high and therefore I intend to keep my 15 Pro longer.

Buy refurbished, had iphone 14 pro and really wanted to try out samsung but new ones cost whooping 1300 pounds - so I went with refurbished s23 ultra for 620 pounds that came in pristine condition without single mark

I’m still using an iPhone 11, besides the battery everything else works just like the day I bought it. I even recorded my music videos with it. Will I upgrade the first chance I get? Absolutely, and the jump in quality will be huge, just like it was when I switched from 6s to 11, but it serves me well and I don’t have enough money to throw around just to be “socially accepted”, that’s just ridiculous, I’ll stay broke forever if I were to do that Great video!

I have an 11 pro, and while it still works, the 64gb has been way too limited. its sad because if I could just upgrade the storage and replace the battery I would still love to use it. But since I need a new phone with more storage, I have to decide whether its worth it to get a new 15, or just get something a little older, such as a 12 or 13.

it is not only food from a financial perspective, we simply can't keep up mindlessly buying new stuff without needing it in a carbon neutral future.

Another 12 mini user here. I upgraded from a 6s plus that broke (sim card reader not working anymore so it had a board related problem). I have a secondary phone which is a nexus 5 running lineageos. I bought the mini used but it is still the most expensive phone that i bought. I chose the mini because it is the cheapest iphone with the small form factor that is modern.

There aren’t many people who upgrade their phone every year. I live in a wealthy country and people keep their phones for about 3 years on average. The people who upgrade their phones annually here have some sort of deal through their carrier or are the kinds of people who are obsessed with the latest technology. Both of these groups are in the minority.

My first smart phone I got in 2014 or 2015, and still have it, though they shut down the 3g network >:( and I can't turn off updates, and I swear they did something to it last couple of updates so it's slow af now. Forced upgrades and planned obsolescence are bs.

i make it a personal rule to upgrade every 4-5 yrs unless shit happens. 1st smartphone I ever used was a galaxy s3 back in 2013..i was ready to ride with it into 2018 no bs. every problem it had i had a fix for it. but my mom's phone screen broke, i tried to fix it, couldn't do it, had to give up my s3. atm im waiting on a pixel 7..but i'd get the battery replaced on this 2XL if i could 🤷🏾‍♂️

Well said, I’m currently using the iPhone 13 PM at the moment. Do I “want” a new phone? Yes, but do I “need” a new phone? No. My phone does everything I need it to do and will still be supported for many years to come.

Using my iPhone 13, will be using it until it dies. I can't imagine what else I'd need my phone to do, it meets all my needs perfectly fine.

I used to use my iPhone 12 mini blue 128gb, and ive used it since 2021! It was my first ever iPhone, and I had a Nokia 8810 flip-phone beforehand. During 2023, I actually received a 14 pro 256gb. But due to financial issues, I had to temporarily have it out of my possession. And this year, I got my iPhone 14 pro back. And i've been using it ever since. The reason why I stopped using my iPhone 12 mini was due to it's battery worsening. It was a really great phone and, I deeply understand where you are going with this. The size was perfect, it wasn't as advanced. Also that quote of yours at 12:35 is so deep and hurts me... I wish things were like they were back in the 2010s area. :C Edit: Thanks for the heart!

There's a number of reasons one may want to upgrade phones. If it slows down, has something that really irritates you or is damaged and economical to repair then yes. An iPhone 12 Mini only lacks in battery but that appears to not be a factor for you. A lot of the "new" features that are advertised as selling points come to the slightly older models anyway, what improvements are there are smaller increments than you'd see even half a decade ago and most of the newer phones just look the same as the previous one. Look at the front of your 12 Mini, you'd have to see it side by side with a 13 Mini to even tell a difference. The idea of upgrading is over time becoming less and less important because we're coming to a plateau. TL;DR: A lot of the time it's not necessary. Sometimes it makes sense though

I just got me a new iPhone 11 only because the iPhone 6s Plus had battery problems and it only had 16gb but my favorite iPhone is still today my iPhone 6s and my iPhone 5se and I still use it as my backup phone today and I had those phones since 2014 and it still works today so I will not buy another iPhone at the end of the day all I care about a phone is dose it still work and I didn’t buy this iPhone 11 until three years later.

We cant because they broke, every phone a i used looked like new. S7 Just died, Samsung s9 Plus has a burned in Display, s20 plus just get an completly red display. Its not status or something else they want that we buy always a new one. Like Htc i had the M7 the old one after 2 years of use died too, only the M8 was okay.

Listen. I get all your points. But phones just give me joy. My Pixel has a camera so good that no phone can match it, and I want to upgrade verytime they make a hardware upgrade, which lately was every year. I will always upgrade because I love to photograph with my phone, and no, I don't need to upgrade, but I know I will be happy and sleep at night without thinking that if I had some other phone I could take a better photo. Now I just know that I have the best thing for things that matter to me and that's the feeling I want to have all the time.

the only reason i upgraded my phone last year was because my old one was getting to the point where it no longer held a charge. other than that was great and i wouldve kept using it if the battery worked.

I got the iPhone 13 and I am loving it! I upgraded because my phone was too small and I don’t have the best eyesight. My Cousin has the latest And he is very spoilt And he is not grateful for what he has! I bought The iPhone 13 with my own money!

i don't get why people aren't happy that this is the case. i mean dude, you just made a video telling people that they shouldn't waste almost a thousand dollars for a slight improvement. how do you not see how amazing it is that you have to tell people not to throw their money away. it shows that they don't have better uses for it. it shows that people just do not have the same problems they had in the past. this was not the case just a couple decades ago. this is not the case in many countries like mine. it's nowhere close to being the case. im just glad that the number of people who can actually watch this video and learn something is growing

I've got S22 Ultra and I got to try S24 Ultra and the camera is visibly better, I was tempted to buy it. But I really don't need it so I stopped myself from buying it.

Underrated. Really underrated

I used the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 a few months after launch, and used ir until last year. I would still be rocking it but for two factors: 1) Samsung stopped supporting it (except for the bi-annual security update) and, as I use my phone to run my financial life, security was paramount to me, and 2) a small OLED burn-in was beginning to manifest on the screen. I traded it before it became worse and lost a lot of value. I got me the iPhone 13 mini, as it was the best phone I could get for my budget: I knew it was a year and a half old by then, but I did not care. A year later, I am still happy with my purchase. the little bugger serves my needs and I’m only looking for another phone to replace my secondary line, which is in a second -hand iPhone SE 1st Gen. This goes to show you do not need the greatest and latest every year. You can make do with your current smartphone if you made a smart choice at the beginning

i only what to upgrade become my battery is degraded and I think replacing the battery is a waste for the phone i have. but i won't upgrade for a while after.

My upgrade path took place within 6 months; I dropped my LG g8 after 3 years of use (2020-2023, the screen wasn't functioning correctly. Fixing the screen cost more than getting a 2nd-hand phone which was newer from the same brand. I got a newer LG velvet then used it for a while but noticed it had iffy service. I later learned the velvet has less than half the supported US bands than a normal 5g phone, likely due to it being one of the first wave of 5g phones. I then upgraded to a doogee rugged 5g phone to have something that is moderately cheap and that is unlikely to break during normal use. I use my phone for texting, calling, and occasionally taking photos. That's about all. Any phone can do these things so i figured why not get a phone which is meant to take a beating so i don't need to worry about these fragile thin devices? I don't mind the extra thickness. I replaced the screen on my LG G8 a little later and keep it as a backup phone now. It works perfectly fine now and i am always tempted to go back to it. I miss LG. Going through all these upgrades in less than half a year made me realize i spent money without REALLY needing to. The doogee phone alone cost about the same as a repair to the LG G8 screen, (200~ usd). I am fully on board with repairing old devices and keeping them in service for as long as physically possible. I only reasoned myself into upgrading based on two things; Connectivity and Durability. The connectivity on the LG velvet wasn't cutting it in my area, so i got something that did. I was also curious about 5g speeds (spoiler, it feels roughly the same). That was the ONLY reason i stopped using it; Which is a shame because I genuinely love the LG software. I would have gone with with the wing or another one of their offerings, but i was afraid of dropping these last remaining devices ever made by my favorite electronics company. I keep them as collectors items now and use the doogee phone as a daily driver. It has the connections I need, and based on the tests I see online, I don't need to worry about dropping it at all. Still, i feel as though i wasted money somehow. Even though I made what felt like rational decisions.

I was using my same LG Stylo 4 up until last year in summer when I got a good deal on an S21 Ultra, I plan on keeping the Ultra for at least another 2 years.

Watching this on my LG G7 which is still going strong though I'll replace the battery soon to last longer. It's perfect as my secondary phone.

This is the first (and hopefully only) time I will have to upgrade a phone in under a year. I had a Samsung Galaxy J3 for 3 years, a Red Note 8 Pro for 3 years and an iPhone SE 2022 for the last year. While I like it, the battery on it is horrendous for me so ill have to replace it :( It's annoying because apart from that I like the phone! Idk if I'm going to get a new one now or wait until a potential SE4 release. Or perhaps a Nothing Phone 2a.

I joyfully operated a huawei P30 pro until this summer when it succumbed to a screen defect. Warranty has expired long ago, but fortunately my mother had a spare iPhone 11 Pro left for me which I am currently using. While I possibly cannot repair my former Huawei‘s screen, I‘m still left with an equally performing phone. However I miss the customability of Android and I‘m looking for a Samsung to buy, preferably a recent one. An S24 Flagship might just be affordable for me, but I should consider the A34 instead since it’s way cheaper yet receiving updates.

I upgrade my second hand LG G3 (2014) last year to an iPhone 7 refurbished (2016) this year!!! Yeah, I'm struggling! 🙂

I only upgrade when i have to, before my 14 pro i was using the iPhone X, the iPhone X stopped getting major updates and it was kinda slow in some applications, so i got myself a new phone, after 6 years of use, my sister has my old X and she is more than happy with it, she had some cr4ppy android phone with a lot of screen burn in so yeah, she could use the upgrade. I will use my 14 pro until it doesn't receive updates anymore, my mother has the same phone as you, and it does everything she needs, my girlfriend still has the iPhone Xr, it works for her and she doesn't need to upgrade, yet, rumors are that ios 18 will support the Xr, so if that is the case, she will keep using it for another 2 years, which is so cool!

its really true im still using my galaxy S7 Edge since 2020 still runs good and camera is not bad at all for a 8 year old phone still beats budget phones from like 2020-2022 its still a fast phone like apps and other stuff i wont upgrade until my phone dies completely.

People should upgrade whenever they feel like it not because someone tells them to providng the person can afford it and priorities are correct in their life.

I had an iPhone 8 Plus for almost 7 years, and I upgraded to the 15 Pro a little over a week ago, as I write this, only because there were a couple of things wrong with it already, like the earpiece speaker was very quiet and the battery life was awful because my battery was degraded to 76 percent. I could’ve lived with all of that honestly if it weren’t for the lightning port starting to go bad; that is really the straw that broke the camels back.

I agree, completely, even though I recently moved to the Samsung S24 Ultra, I kept my SE (2016) for years, even after buying the NOTE 8, S9 Plus, and NOTE9 over the last couple of years. I always seem to return to it, I like the small design. But then it started to get sluggish, so I move to the 12 mini, but sold it for some needed $$, move to an old 8, finally, I have moved to the S24 Ultra, but 'only' because Samsung gave me $400 for the Note 9. I upgraded my wife to a Samsung Fold 5 from a iphone SE (2020), since they gave me $350 for my S9 Plus. Big phones are nice, but clumber sum.

I'm trying upgrade from budget phone to an flagship due to my phone being laggy for no reason at all I've tried everything to reduce the lag nothing has been working so I feel like upgrading is a better option tbh

this goes for everything as well as phones.... computer parts too. i have a 2021 moto phone, and i HAVE to upgrade to a newer one. looking toward a budget phone now,...then when i get stable financially then getting god tier....galaxy note 24' THEN...I'm not upgrading.

Me. Im jealous to those people can keep their phone for many years without upgrading for a new phone. Even they can afford to the latest flagship phone. Its really hard if you have already a knowledge to know the good specs of phone. Thats when something new coming phone model with a latest chipset and a lot of new feature like camera screen etc... And this the reason in my mind "oh i want to try that. Then after few months you feel boring again and decided to sell it. And buy another new one this is my cycle now. I want to scape with this habits now im trying to stop buying new phone again. And stay on my phone like other do for 3 to 4 years before to upgrade again. I hope i can do that right now i have 3 phone. One is poco F5 and pixel 5 and iPhone 13. And now im thinking to switch to Xiaomi 14 soon. And now i now i thinking should i need to buy this or what😅

Bro this is so legit. I used my Galaxy s9 for almost 5 years and it still runs great except the battery drains out super quick. I recently upgraded to iPhone 13 for good battery life.

I agree with you, upgrading from iPhone to newer iPhones especially past the iPhone 12 is not very justifiable as IOS doesn't demand much from it's overpowered Processor in the phone as there is no support for dual app split screen or pop ups for apps less some video apps, so you are basically upgrading to the same phone but with slightly better cameras that most don't notice the difference. But some may want the upgrades of ProRes or Log video recording, Type C support or a smoother 120hz Pro-motion display, or a better processor for Heavy Gaming, but the still lack of a Vapor Chamber cooling system in the iPhones really cripples Heavy gaming on an iPhone, but ya most people in the world don't demand these things as they are just good to have For people who live outside of the US, they have tons of other brands of phones with different software skins they run on for android. Upgrading between brands can grant people different features like dual messenger accounts or dual phone accounts in one phone, to a Stylus in your phone. To me upgrading can be justified if your workflow or normal usage requires features that are not present in your current phone. But once you stick to a brand and that works for you, upgrading from flagships released from 2020 onwards is not really justified unless you want the new 2024 AI Features and it enhances your efficiency, or better Cameras and videography performance, or simply a better processor and bigger vapor chamber cooling for your phone for heavy gaming, then those can be justified for upgrades. If not wait till your phone breaks then buy a new one. Or you are a tech reviewer or tech hobby

Well, the USB-C is a big upgrade for the iPhone. Even though that doesn’t mean much to me, I still keeping my iPhone 12 mini. Unless you see yourself actually getting you out of the New port it’s not really worth the upgrade unless you really wanted for like one of the new colors pointed expensive to do so, but some Phone providers can take 50% off on contracts for people who have those providers but those providers are far and few inbetween. But I’m keeping mine. 12 mini 256GB

u should buy a good phone and use it for at-least 5 years android or iPhone , got redmi k50i best value for money will use for 4 years more minimum for laptop depends on the spec u can use for 10 years also , got acer nitro 5 2019 model best in class there is literally no problem yet , will use for 4 years more minimum

Reasonable. This is a great mindset. Now, let's see here, you have an iPhone 12. that will get updates through 2027. Yes, keep! In my case, I have no phone. Sooo, I'm in fact searching through phones to pick one. At first I thought, oh he's going to encourage everyone to boycott these big phone makers that make piddly upgrades that are just gimmicky while also making useful tech obsolete just to extract more money from everyone. Seriously, I want the 3.5 jack back on the dang phones! Yes, I use wireless bluetooth, but if you want the best uninterrupted sound, wired provides it. Also, why on earth did expandable microSD card slot memory go away in nearly most phones? That was wrong. It was just to make people pay the most for added storage.

Worldly possessions never bring true happiness, id know because I’ve spent years chasing the latest tech and still felt empty. Things have changed in my life and I couldn’t care less about what phone or computer I have as long as it’s good for the things I need to handle on a daily basis. Be content with what you have, it’s a blessing from God to even be where many of us are today in life , many others have it worse than us.

Probably going to be a hot take, but if your phone inst getting security updates, you need to upgrade asap. The best thing you can do is get a phone from a company that pledges to support it for a long length of time.

I don't like upgrading to newest phones. I used to own a mid-low budget samsung smartphones. They didn't last that Long. I had to upgrade to a newer phone with latest android version at around 1 to 1 ½ years. Now I own a flagship which it is my s22 ultra and I'm happy with it. 4 years of android updates is enough. Since Samsung announced 7 years of Android OS, that exceeds my expectations and be able to keep my phone for a long time. The only thing I will upgrade is when my phone starts to act up, even though I took good care of it. I don't want to spend too much money on upgrading to a newer phone.

Ngl i save enough I'll buy 15 basic and that's gonna be my main with my pixel 5a. And that's enough.

You forget to mention the option of reselling your old Iphone and using that money to buy the newest Iphone. Especially iPhones dont loose the value as fast. I upgrade every 2 years.

I've always thought about this... With how far smartphones have come, any flagship phone made in the past ~5 years will be very fast and usable. In 2024, probably 90% of people would get by perfectly well with something like an iPhone 11 or 11 Pro. Or even an XS. The newest phones are redundant and expensive when you'd get almost the exact same experience with a phone that's only a few years old. Besides this fact, it's also just not obvious or well-known that you can buy a 'slightly older' refurbished flagship phone on its own, for much cheaper. And then buy a phone plan to use with it. People will buy the newest phones with a contract from a carrier, because it's the most accessible and popular thing to do. And it seems to be intentionally marketed that way, for people to think it's the only/best option.

I agree that you do not have to buy new things all the time, and definitely not the new latest phone every year ;) But you will have to upgrade and replace your old items eventually for practical reasons. I generally upgrade my phones every 4 to 5 years.

Bought my phone in 2018 for $100. Watching this video on it. I looked it up once and I think it's a 2015 model...

No, i dotnt think the 6s with 16 GB of STORAGE would work for me at all. Way too little storage and no, I dont want to stream my music because there's way too much in the chain that I don't have control over. I have a Sony Xperia 1V. It was extremely expensive for me but it has everything I want in a phone. Headphone jack, memory card slot and no holes in my screen. Since this thing cost so much it will be my phone for years to come. I've never kept a phone for longer than a year but as of the snapdragon 855 I don't think I personally need to upgrade anymore for a while. 12 GB of RAM should be ok, until it isn't, lol. My screen resolution should also be totally fine; 4k is overkill.
