I meditate every day and it usually takes about 20 minutes for my brain to quieten down. This was very effective. I actually watched it thinking it would be a load of rubbish but since it was a short video it wouldn't do any harm to at least watch it. Great technique.

Good idea. Thanks. But e.g. "waiting for next thought" is a thought ... so it came, as an open context, that's why it doesn't bother you, - it works indeed, good method - but frankly, there's not such a thing as a "no thought" state !!! ... ...

@@hellisemptyandallthedevils1474 TM. It's mantra based. You need to go on a course which is about one week and you get given a mantra by the trainer. You have to keep it secret. It's an onomatapeic word. You just repeat it silently and this settles your body down . Sometimes you have a brilliant experience - real stillness but it is not easy. It is worth learning.

So interesting. The mind is like a disobedient child. You tell it to stop, and it will keep going. But ask for a thought, and it will refuse to give one to you. You start to perceive the thinking process instead of being distracted. Realizing that thoughts are in fact a meaningless noise. Thanks for this helpful tip

Nice video. One more suggestion. Be careful what you feed your mind. Avoid comparing yourself with others, reduce watching negative social media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind instantly. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives relief from stress-anxiety. For a relaxed mind observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 10-15-20 minutes or more. You can sit or lay down anywhere-anytime. No deep breathing. Don’t fight your thoughts. With practice the mind will relax. Keep a reminder to observe your breath sensations throughout the day and night at home, at work, when travelling etc with eyes open or closed. One more tip is to sit on a chair without moving, be still and observe your breath for a few minutes. Stillness reduces thoughts and brings quick relief. Like me make this a lifetime habit to have a better life. Best wishes--Counsellor.

Thank you so much for your comment! I'm going to apply this to my everyday life. My life has been very hard because of this. It feels as if I'm not one with my own mind. It takes away my peace. S umit, Reduce negative thoughts with a simple practice and have a healthier life. Your breath is directly related to your mind [brain] causing negative thoughts-anxiety. For a relaxed life sit on a chair, back straight, eyes closed, be as still as possible and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for around 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight with your thoughts. Slowly the mind will relax. No deep inhalation-exhalation needed. Anytime of the day or night before sleep sit or lie down on your back and observe your breath. Stillness brings internal peace. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a good life. Best wishes Shyaaam Sir. -Counsellor.

Good trick. Yes, it can be that simple. Here is a simple variation on 'waiting for your next thought' . Begin with an emotionally neutral, mundane internal dialogue that is yet very deliberate. It could be anything but better if it's something that doesn't crank your emotions and desires. Example, "I am sitting quietly in the dark. I am breathing. My eyes are closed." etc. Now deliberately slow that internal dialogue down: "I . . . am . . . sitting . . .quietly . . . in . . . the . . . dark . . . " Then slow down even more by stretching out the space between the words: "I . . . . . am . . . . . . . . .sitting . . . . . . . . .quietly . . . . . . . in . . . . . . . . . . . the . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .dark . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . As the words of your internal dialogue go by pay just a little attention to the silences between words but without trying to capture them. Just observe the silences but without clinging.. You will find the words of your thoughts are different but the silences are the same. With a little practise you will get more and more comfortable stretching out the silences. Once you can stop your thoughts for longer stretches do not expect supernatural powers. Just be in the moment of silence without any expectation. Accept the silence for what it is. It can give you inner peace which is a kind of super power - but a natural power and not a supernatural one. Also, sometimes I may use an affirmation to cultivate the proper mindset just before I turn off my own thoughts. I may think to myself, "without desire, without judgment" and then go silent . . . . . .

Incredible. Really works. I am doing in another way to reach the same state: THOUGHTLESSNESS. I watch my thoughts. While doing so, it conceals present thought. But I don't know about " to ask to yourself : what will be my next thought? " and wait for Next Thought to appear which takes very long time to appear as next thought. So everyone must practise this easy method to enter into a " THOUGHTLESSNESS " state of mind which does so many anxieties and stresses away from one's mind leaving him in calm and peaceful mind which in turn induces good relaxation. Do it. Try it. You get it.

As long as you don't ask yourself "what will be my next thought" again and again on your mind, there will be no unconscious thoughts. Thoughts are either in the form of madhyama (thought sound or words) or Pashyanthi (thought images/movies). I did not get either of them unless I consciously placed a thought while following this technique.

Watching the rythmic movement of breath or watching one's own thoughts, one could reach a thoughtless state for a while, but cannot be sustained ; transcending one's own mind at will needs, consistent practice followed by certain dos and don'ts and monumental patience ; when one does this all through one's life without clamour or expectations, such a one will become boundless !

If you seek permanent relief then you must better give your mind a permanent job to watch your thoughts.

It helps to do this before you pray as prayer should be sincere and uninterrupted. There's a HAM radio term called "full quieting" which means your words are coming in clear with no distractions such as skip or static. Also if you achieve what some call "death of ego" you will stand on an equal plane with all mankind and better grasp reality. There is a God and He does want to hear from us as we struggle through this life. Once you have full quieting, ask and ye shall receive, seek and ye shall find, knock and it shall be opened unto you.

You can also do more than just "observe" your thoughts. If you release your breath in a very subtle ( i mean very subtle) way while focusing on your breath going out of your nose, there will be immediate shift in consciousness from the wake state to dream or deep sleep state or even to Turiya (Samadhi state) if practiced regularly. This is Kriya yoga. Point is the purpose of all tantra or yoga techniques is to remove past karma. Jnana yoga or vippasanna helps to prevent mind chatter, habitual thoughts or thought patterns by going beyond all identities. This is like fasting. But there is also Karma yoga where we need to analyze consciously to go by contextual ethics or dharma while leading a worldly life. Karma yoga is thoughts and actions without creating karma. So, Karma yoga is like keto diet (you eat but still mimic fasting)

@@rhondapelletier2141 Reduce negative thoughts with a simple practice and have a healthier life.

An awesome technique that works every time. It's almost like magic. The first time I tried it was after reading The Power of Now (I think) by Eckhart Tolle and I was like damn...really. And yes really, it was that simple, and I do work every time. Thank you for helping more people to quiet their minds and meditate.

This is quite helpful for stopping thoughts. I am a musician and the biggest distraction is music that goes through my mind constantly. There isn’t a “ next song” because the tune playing in my mind continues.
