This is a short video that gives a little foundational support for the effectiveness on the "lost art" of straight on kicking. The four kickers presented are Jim Bakken, Russell Erxleben, Mark Mosely and Tom Dempsey. Three of whom all instructed at the original Mike Farley's Kickers Camps in River Falls, Wisconsin.

The longest 'conventional' straight-ahead field goal ever made was on November 8, 1970 when the Saints' Tom Dempsey kicked a 63-yard field goal from his own 37- yard line to beat the Lions 19-17. He beat the NFL record by 7 yards (old record was 56 yards by Bert Rechichar). I don't know if any 'conventional' 'straight-ahead' kicker has kicked one longer than 56 to be in second place behind Dempsey; but there has not been ONE straight-ahead conventional kick longer than 63 yards since 1970 - a record that will NEVER be broken. Soccer-style kickers have broken the 63 yard record. I appreciate their talent and their records, but let's see them kick it straight ahead and conventional like Dempsey, Mosley, Erxleben, and Bakken. Also, Dempsey was born with HALF-A-FOOT, not a 'club' foot. The NFL had approved a shoe for his deformity the year before he kicked his 63-yarder.

I was a barefoot soccer style kicker until my teammate stepped on it and broke it during practice. After I recovered I went back to straight on from my junior high school days. I ended up kicking further and straighter than ever. However, it was a bitch to find a square toe cleat that fit properly. Good video bro.

Wow. what a story... Great resilience to continue to find a way to kick. Not many places sell a straight on shoe, but they're still out there!

I know Chip. Great guy, former Golden Gopher. But Chip was a soccer style kicker, not straight on... still, he could bang it a long way!

Get facts straight , Dempsey did not have a club foot and the 63 yard kick was 1970

You're right on the kick happening in 1970... as you heard in my commentary, I'm just narrating over the top from my memory. Eddie, you may be interested to know that I met Tom Dempsey at my father's kickers camp and that's what Tom said regarding his foot. I've never known another kicker to strike the ball with such force. Ultimately, those details seem to miss the point of my video - which goes to how good these guys were and a style of kicking that is under appreciated today. It can still be very effective for young kickers if they are trained properly... of which, my football camps might be the last in the country to teach it.

should have shown Jim Turner's unorthodox stile...he punched the ball with very little follow through...

I could have highlighted more, like Turner, or George Blanda (who had an unusual stance prior to kick) and guys like Fred Cox and of course, Lou Groza. I picked these four, in part, because I met and knew 3 of the 4 (never met Mosely) and because they all had a uniqueness to the style, yet all would be great to emulate for any young straight-on kicker today.
