I've been doing street photography for nearly 2 years now. At first I was really uncomfortable, however over time I've grown to love it. I think having candid photos of the city we live in tells a story of life now that hopefully people in years to come can enjoy.
@CreativeConnor

I agree absolutely 😊 and you know it's also just great to get out amongst the people in your city/towns streets ☺️

Curious. How do you plan on making sure those photos make it to be seen in years to come? So that generations later on down the line can see how life once was?

Though I don't think I could do street photography, I do enjoy so many of the pictures I've seen from the years BEFORE it became a bit of a fraught subject. Now disappeared ways of life, streets that have been demolished, their original residents moved on, poverty and wealth, leisure and work; all recorded... until now. I suspect there's going to be a huge gap in the record of candid street photography showing life as it goes on currently, and that gap being appallingly filled with staged selfies

True! It's very saturated... I like it as a way to engage with the place I'm in... trying to see things in a new way or patterns of people! I know there's more a go go go GO mentality out there! I like to combine it with trying to learn something about a building near me or maybe listen to a podcast and walk slowly and take a moment in each place! The photo always seems to be a way for me to remember something new and not necessarily just go get a photo 🤓📷

Oh jeez... Street shooting got me into a bit of a gurning match in Belfast last time I was there. I was snapping away hiding within my camo fishing hat and a voice moaned "how dare you". A passive commuter turned aggressive legal authority on photography in public spaces came over, we managed to keep it largely civil and I did ask if they wanted their photo deleted. They affirmed, I smiled and deleted it in front of them, pointing to 2 metres above me that we were both already being recorded on Belfast's truly excellent all seeing security camera system. For one of us temper was beyond enjoying the irony in the moment. Maybe on reflection the penny will drop. It was truly done in good spirit and I was torn with Bruce Gildens "I didn't know you owned the street." ringing in my ear.. Did I let the side down..?

hahahah Fair! Blefast locals don't hold back, filmed up there a few times and it can get heated. They do not like drones lol 😂😂 I don't think you let any side down, you did the corect thing in that situation. They don't feel exploited and you don't lose a whole bunch, and proabbly gained some seriously important skills at diffusing situations 😎

Great Job on the video! My friend calls me a creep, when I do street photography. Than, I show him the photo and he begins to understand. Live.
@lifetimesofamultiplemediam1003
…and Selfies are for narcissists! Some good points raised in this. I love my street photography, but in the black community (if such a thing really exists) street photographers tend to be seen as; peeping Toms, government spies, and individuals on the fringes of criminality who need to go and find a real job! I've been called all of the above by strangers on the street. Having said all of that, when I show people the breadth of my work on Instagram (@maexhair), fb or Flickr, they start to understand. You can't really judge a person based off one image. That is like judging a person from a position of ignorance; it's not smart, because your judgement will be based upon ignorance. There's an old cliché saying that there is a link between black people and the Irish; truth be told, the Ireland you've shown in your video sounds to me a bit like the so-called black community where I live in Brixton South London. Keep on keeping on.

I used to be a huge fan of street photography and did a fair share of it, however, now I no longer feel comfortable doing it. Have tried to get back into it but just can't seem to, sad in a way. Great video, all the best.

I haven’t finished watching, but from what I’ve understood from your response so far is that you’re missing the point as to why this photo could be considered creepy. It’s not necessary the act of taking strangers photos that’s creepy. In the photo referred to as creepy it is that the image is taken from far away and in grass..doing this evokes a sense of voyeurism in the viewer where not only are they “spying” on someone but doing it hidden. I believe that is what some may see as creepy. I think this photo could work well in a peeping Tom type series if done so ironically, but slippery slope lol

The problem is exactly that, people don't really understand street photography and often want to call us creeps. Enjoy this video, good stuff Connor!

Man was not arrested for covering his face....no such offence exists ....by the sound of your description he was arrested for a public order offence( swearing in public)...£85 fine ( at the station would have to concede the offence of his own volition)...

Some nice shots here. For me (as a street shooter) what is creepy is seeing a photographer shooting candids in the streets with a 200mm lens. Now that is creepy. Sneaky. Just. Don't. Do. It.

We don't see photos with our eyes, we see them with our mind. Maybe those people who thought the photo of the girl through the grass is creepy, need to ask themselves why that was their first impression.

Love how you show the differences, if anything people in general are creepy for thinking candid street photography is creepy! People are just way too easily offended these days, it really is the snowflake generation.
@CreativeConnor
@CreativeConnor 5 лет назад
I do think people are too quick to jump down the throat of the person with the camera.. I've had a lot of run ins with security saying I can't film in places or at buildings too! They haven't a breeze what the laws are 😂
@Cagey7531
@Cagey7531 5 лет назад
@@CreativeConnor Thankfully I've only had trouble with security once, 3 of them approached me taking shots of a building across from where they worked. After trying to reason and explain the law about shooting in public areas [which it was] and that they had no power here, their snotty attitude forced me into a stance of 'what's it got to do with you?, and what are you going to do about it?' - and they had nothing ... walked off with tails between their legs. I got the feeling their bullying worked on others in the past but not today my friends ... not today ;)
