I do love vintage HiFi gear - and I love bringing it back from the dead!! Here's a successful repair on an early 1980s Mitsubishi cassette deck so it can once again be enjoyed rather than ending up in the waste stream!
Many vintage cassette decks fail as they get older due to rubber drive belts perishing and generally this is a pretty easy fix! So why not have a go - you may just surprise yourself! 😊
If you'd like to try the Rubber Renue on your own projects, you can find it here..

Even if you purchase something on Amazon totally unrelated after entering through one of my links, it really helps support my channel with a small commission.. and it costs you nothing extra at all! 😊👍
Thanks for watching!

Nicely done. Thoughtful, careful, and minimal dismantling is the trick. Rubber Renue does work well.

Luckily you caught it before it went to its sticky phase. I’ve done this work on a few things and the belt has come out looking like used chewing gum and stuck to everything like tar. Normally happens when it degrades but also gets hot like in a storage unit or shed.

Yep, I have seen rubber belts turn to sticky black goo... it's not fun to clean up! Thanks for watching! 😊

Great video. I picked up a vintage sanyo system for next to nothing. The rd30 cassette belts are tired/stretched and need replacing. It works but the auto stop doesn't. Trying to puck up the courage to have a go. Cheers

I'm not sure how the auto stop mechanisms work, but I'm sure you can do it! 👍😊

Great save mate. Some of the old 80s audio gear was good stuff. I had an old Akai amplifier that just kept going forever.

Thanks Glen. Yes, the mid 70s into the 80s era had some awesome hifi gear!

Well done on 'first' BW! 😁Yep - it was the first cassette I put my hand on, and not a bad choice I thought! As a kid I used to pull everything apart to see how it worked! Natural curiosity I guess! After awhile I got good at putting things back together again! 🤣

Hey, nice! By the way, you don't remember what dimensions you had on the drive belt by any chance? I'm trying to fix a MG-4400 and it looks really super-similar to yours, but I can't find a service manual anywhere. The original drive belt has completely fallen to pieces (although the other rubber things looks fine, just as yours). Thanks!
@TheUltimateRecycler
@TheUltimateRecycler Год назад
Thanks! Nope, sorry - no idea of the belt dimensions now. I remember providing the pulley diameters and the distance (centre to centre) and the supplier had a formula to calculate the belt size I needed.

I'm hoping to get some assistance with a Mitsubishi DT-4400 tape deck that I am looking at for a friend. The unit appears to be behaving with one small exception whereby the deck kicks out of play, FF, or RW modes after 2 or 3 seconds. What I've observed is that there's some sort of red LED + phototransistor arrangement with a perforated wheel between it that is spun by the tape counter belt. I replaced the tape counter belt as it was loose, but the issue persists even with the wheel spinning steadily. I can't find a service manual for this deck unfortunately, so I'm flying blind. I attempted to test what I suspect is the NPN phototransistor by connecting my multimeter in µA mode across it while the red LED shone directly onto it. I was expecting to see some sort of change in current but nothing changes, even when I move the perforated wheel such that the light from the LED is being blocked. My questions are: Is my current measuring test flawed in some way? Is there a way of determining a suitable replacement phototransistor? My local shop sells them but only the infrared type. Does anyone happen to have a copy of the service manual for this tape deck? Thanks in advance.

Hi Nigel, thanks for your question! I'm sorry, but I have no experience with the issue you are having. Other than what you have tried, I'd suggest reflowing all the solder joints just incase there are problems with connectivity. In my experience, solder issues are much more common than component failure (other than old caps perhaps!). Perhaps someone else can be of assistance. Best of luck, Chris
