Leonard didn’t tie up the entire fight. Both were wrestling or grappling in the clinches as much as they were trading blows and punches, and Duran tied up Leonard as much as Leonard did to him in this fight.
Two true titans. Two warriors on the ring. A show like few. A pleasure for those of us who love boxing and we were not born to see this fight. Beautiful fight A master class of box. Duran had everything: waist, excellent feet, an electric left jab and a devastating right. Leonard the owner of speed. The other very fast boxer I've seen was Oscar de la Hoya. This fight is in the top 5 in history

Everything good but please don’t ever put a Dela Hoya in this catagory!!! He couldn’t beat these smaller fighters because he had no plan B against these sharp shooters!!!
Ray Leonard's GREATEST fight!!! No, he didn't win but he FOUGHT like the CHAMPION he was!!! He stood in there and he definitely took some but he gave some also! My FAVORITE fight of ALL TIME!!!
The best Welterweight ever against the best Lightweight ever! For 2 fights at Welterweight against Carlos Palamino & Leonard,Duran was a match for anyone in history. The first 4 rounds of this fight are absolutely electric!!
Great stuff. The two most talented guys of my generation. I was born too late to see the really old-school legends like Robinson or Marciano; but these guys in their prime are both in my top 10 all-time. Ali's in there of course. Roy Jones too, though he never really had that epic bout. Duran was so freaking great. He went up in weight class and ended up hurting himself later in his career; but in his prime he was crazy good. And tough.
Duran scored more, had more substantial shots, pressed the action, controlled the tempo, and made it generally his type of fight. He won the fight convincingly.
For Leonard this fight was like the moment when the Grinch sees the Whos in Whoville singing.. . and his heart grows to three times the size. We all have those moments in our lives. . . when we face the unearthly, unexpected, unthinkable. . . a few rounds with Duran. . . the Whos in Whoville. . . these are the moments that define us and props to Leonard for how he responded in this fight and after.

Jacovini1313 exelente video. Eran hombres no payasos.
Duran also had physical problems. After this fight he balloned up to 230 pounds and had to lose all that weight in 1.5 months which caused cramps in his body and also mentally getting Taunted really fucks him up, Leonards brother told him that and he used it well.
he balooned up to about 180-200 sources say. he didnt put on 80 lbs in that short of time. he was def way overweight though. much later in his retirement he hit 240, then he got in a car accident and lost all the weight while in the hospital
Holy holy holy shit..¡ "Mano de piedra" Roberto Duran with his force and killer very letal attitude, Sugar Ray Leonard with his estrategic intelligence on the fight, both tremendous gladiators, I was only 11 and I do remember this fight, today am 50 and watching this historical memories again, thanks for upload this stuff, greetings to everyone from Anchorage, Alaska, The United States of America.
This ties Ali v Frazier 1 as the greatest fight in boxing history. On both occasions you had two all-time greats at their peak with contrasting styles going all-out for 15 rounds. Interestingly, on both occasions, the shorter, more powerful pressure fighter won.
Best fight I've ever seen.....wish these two guys were still and young! I was surprised at Duran's speed and conditioning. I though Sugar Ray took the last several rounds.
There was nothing like going to the closed-circuit TV broadcasts of the big fights of the '70's and '80's. There was such a crowd mood of anticipation and excitement, it was like actually BEING at the fight.
+pajasa62 Absolutely,it was like going to the super bowl in those days. I saw this at Shea stadium ,the crowd was very pro Duran ,all night thousands upon thousands kept yelling DURAN DURAN DURAN it was so loud I thought I was at a Led Zepellin concert ,you could not hear yourself think. I.M.O the fight was much closer than everyone made it ,I thought Duran won by a point maybe 2, but nowhere near the way the crowd at shea had it. Anyway we saw when Ray went back to his boxing style in the 2nd fight how easily he handled Duran. Both all time greats. Lil Floyd jr could not carry the jock strap of either Roberto or Ray.
+Deagledrumzz That's funny, because I lived in New York at the time, but I saw this fight at the Westchester County Center...AND...I saw Led Zeppelin in June of 1977! I sometimes wonder if damaged was caused to boxing's popularity when closed circuit telecasts stopped. It created such a unique excitement being at such a gathering. The first closed circuit fight I went to was the 3rd Ali-Frazier fight and I remember in the undercard (I think Larry Holmes was fighting) and the announcer said something like "It's 9:30 in the morning here in Manila" and it just seemed so unreal to me. (I was a young kid)
I hope Don King had family that loved him cause I sure had a hard time with the idea. Duran was a warrior. Leonard was a warrior. Awesome boxing match.
Leonard show-boated on a lot of out-classed fighters on his way up. He was always showing off when he was beating inferior fighters. But not this night. This time he got his ass beat, and he knew it.
