Ditto on the Joker, I still think Jared Leto is a great choice to play the Joker but his portrayal didn't really work for me because they made him feel too much like a gangster. And the tattoos don't really help either.
Lol definitely agree with this review Sam. It's just hilarious of just how irrational the fanboys were being toward the critics going to the extent of signing a petition to have Rotten Tomatoes shut down all for this one film despite the site being owned by Warner Bros. I also agree with you on what you said about Will Smith being wrong for the part of Dead Shot's character. I always felt this ever since I saw the trailer. The man just can't play a villain and 9/10 times he plays himself when he tries.
You are so right on about this movie, Sam. One of my friends is exactly like the type you described. He saw Harley in her original costume for 5 seconds and immediately decided that this movie was the comic come to life. And gave it high praise simply for Easter eggs like that. He's also a DC fanboy who thinks DC can do no wrong. It's sad how some fans can be so easily swayed and manipulated by simply showing them something from the comics which ultimately is meaningless to the quality of the film.

I pretty much agree. Probably objectively worse than Man of Steel, but I enjoyed it more, and it's certainly better than BvS. Still doesn't really feel like the comics at all, and it makes no sense for the Suicide Squad to be taking on a magical, world-destroying threat like this. Where are Batman and Wonder Woman? They seemed to be holding their own against Doomsday - this shouldn't have been an issue for them. Task Force X is generally for covert missions that the US government shouldn't be doing, so if it goes awry they can just pin it on these asshole villains. Assault on Arkham is ten times better. It's shocking how badly WB fucked this up when the blueprint was right there. By the way, I hate when people say "These movies aren't for the critics. They're for the fans." Fuck you. I'm a fan and I fucking hated Batman v Superman in particular, because it just doesn't give a shit about those characters.
People who say these movies are made for comic book fans, not for you are dumb. Here's why that logic doesn't work. These studios are pumping like over $200 million dollars to make these movies not for like 50k-100k people, they are making these movies for 50-100 million people. What these idiots don't realize is that they are not what makes these movies successful, its the general movie going audience which have probably never picked up a comic in their life. Also this is a comic book movie adaptation, its not gonna be 100% copy and paste from comics onto the big screen. Certain things work in comics but don't work in film. So yeah I agree with everything you said, those people giving even a shitty comic book movie a pass just because its made for them are dumb.
So let me get this straight people like weak female characters such as Louis Lane and Katana being either sexy lamps, damsels in distress or bad assess with no character beats. And people don't mind that Psylocke was a skimpy bad ass that looks out of place since she has no dialogue and the only one in her costume or that Megan Fox is objectified during her Transformers or the recent TMNT outings. Yet people send unreasonable death threats to Joss Whedon because people taught that Black Widow was a damsel in distress and wore a skimpy outfit. BW had more bearing to the plot than any of these aforementioned characters. I seriously think that the only reason that people show loyalty to this year's X-Men or DC is because of underdog support rather than actual objective quality of the movie.

To my knowledge, we have never disagreed on a film--even those films you get lambasted for your opinions on. This means I should probably give you money so you can get these reviews out faster.
I too am really fed up with all these fanboys/girls, telling people to go read a comic book because they seem to think it will make them understand the story and characters better. As incredibly ludicrous as this may seem to comic book fans, I say you don't need to verse yourself in a comic book to understand a superhero, because if the adaptation is well made and handled with passion and care, a comic book is quite unnecessary. Good for you Sam because I was bored out of mind during the last hour of this garbage. I am 100% done with the DCEU after being severely underwhelmed three times in a row and according to some fans, I'm either "full of shit" or "missing out" for stating that and whatever, these insecure losers can have their shitty films while I'm off to watch something worth more my time.
I enjoyed Man of Steel back when I saw it in theatres. Watching it again recently, I don't really like it. I went into Batman v Superman with low expectations and I was still let down. Same with Suicide Squad. Suicide Squad is mildly enjoyable in my opinion, but that really isn't enough to give this movie a pass. Even if I go in with low expectations to a DCEU film I'm still let down, it honestly shows how much they dropped the ball after The Dark Knight Trilogy ended. All 3 of these movies honestly would have been so great and be box office successes if only they hadn't hired Zack Snyder to oversea everything. I don't want just "okay" or "it was alright" I want great DCEU films!!! DC gotta step up their game!
Honestly that slow-mo when Deadshot was about to shoot the bomb had me and my friend in tears laughing. It's the most ridiculous thing I have ever seen in a movie, but I loved it in a "so bad it's good" sense.
Hope to hear what you think about Wonder Woman and Justice League so far too. Honestly, at this point I'm more excited for The LEGO Batman Movie than I am this. Seriously, a movie about toy versions of these characters seems more appealing at this point. :/ Not to mention, the trailers are downright hilarious!

This is years late, but fuck it: This is my least favorite of the entire DCEU. Horrible editing and messy directing, terrible structure and storytelling, ugly visuals and bland villains, and underwritten characters that deserved much more attention and execution(it hurts even worse considering they got phenomenal actors to play them). As much as we can disagree on BVS(I don’t think that’s a great movie either), but it at least feels like a complete movie with a vision that feels like it’s coming from the director and not the studio, who stripped this movie into something that I genuinely hate. Whatever the original cut was, it can’t have been nearly as bad as this mess. WB has a lot of work to do to win me over with this team with James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. Very excited for that, but damn......if they fuck it up somehow.

This is the straw that broke the camel's back for me. I'm done with the DCEU, and honestly Dr. Strange and Spider-Man Homecoming are the only Superheroes movies that I'm looking forward to, out of the 20 or so in development.
I don't why people got excited by the Harley jester costume, it looked horrible. It looked like a $20 costume they got from a Halloween store. It's almost like they intentionally made it look bad just so they could say, "see, the jester costume can't work in real life." I also don't understand how people could say that they got Harley right except for the casting. They didn't develop her relationship with Joker at all. They just have Waller say that she fell in love with the Joker but don't actually show it. Harley starts out already being in love with the Joker. And that fantasy showing her deepest desires completely misses the point of the character. She doesn't want a normal life with a cured Joker. She didn't fall in love with the Joker before he became the Joker, she became obsessed with the Joker. A "normal" life is the opposite of what she wants.
I agree, I hate Harley's original design. It worked alright in the Animated Series style, but just looks awkward in real life or any other art style. Personally the only Harley look I really like is her costume from Arkham Asylum the game. It finds the right balance between the heavily costumed Jester suit and the overly sexualized current Harley look.
Michael Haneke Yeah, but that's sort of the way I like Harley. In the same way that I like the Riddler for how insufferable and obnoxious he is, it works considering he's a villain. It's when they try to make Harley geniuenly funny and likeable, like in this movie, that the cringe factor comes in to play.

I have been waiting for you view on this movie...hopefully this won't become another Reddit post with my comment picked out again, smh. I agree with you that I genuinely had fun with this movie but it is also clear that what we got was not Ayer's version and the reception of BvS had alot to do with that. The one thing that got me is that this movie was supposed to be about bad guy, 'The worst of the worst' as Waller said...so I felt that the movie should have either went full dark and twisted or just had fun with the premise. It felt to me that it was sorta lost in the middle. You didn't really see the villains doing 'bad' things...but anyways. Solid review and solid points. I will have to say, I actually liked Will Smith in the role. Granted, you never really felt that he was 'evil' but he brought some entertainment to the role that I enjoyed.
9:47-9:52 On that note, thank God for Birds of Prey. Harley was actually a great character in that film. And I have some hope for the soft reboot by James Gunn.
I don't know...I think the mediocre _Man of Steel_ is the best DCEU film so far. _Suicide Squad_ and BvS are both equally bad films that are bad for different reasons. (Luckily for them _X-Men: Origins_, _Green Lantern_ and Fant4stic exist so they can't be called the "worst" superhero films ever made)

Huh wasn't expecting to see a Star vs The Forces of Evil reference here. But despite some glaring issues, like you said, it was entertaining at least. And I completely agree with what you said about Leto's Joker.
Should've just did Gail Simone's Secret Six from 2008. They tried to make many members of Batman's rogues gallery into sympathetic villains, which was a way to get more Batman fans in the theatre. Guess we'll get a DLC version of the movie in a few months.
The real reason I hated batman v superman dawn of Justice was because it felt less like a movie and more like a 2 and a half hour trailer for the Justice league. Suicide Squad on the other hand feels like a movie. A messy and jumbled movie, but still, it didn't feel like an advertisement.
I really liked Suicide Squad but unfortunately it has a lot of issues. One of the biggest ones for me is Harley Quinn and the Joker's relationship. This isn't Harley Quinn. This is the memified version of Harley Quinn that comes from people who don't really understand who the character is. The skewed and basic public persona. She's spunky, confident, sexy, and gets to be in a "relationship" with fiction's most famous psychopath, the Joker. But there's so much more to her and she doesn't have to be a glorified sex object. Margot Robbie gave a great performance. She's not the problem. She may be a sex symbol but the character she's playing is supposed to be more than that. And so the problem is the script. They have the her acting like she's been in abusive relationships her entire life. Not only is that not that character but it's not even consistent with the film itself since she's supposed to be a psychologist who's TURNED crazy by the Joker. And the Joker's abuse of Harley is heavily implied when he uses electroshock on her and so it's very clue that her relationship with him is toxic unhealthy and shouldn't be romanticized. And yet the Joker appears to actually care about her and genuinely wants her back. He doesn't even seem to have any ulterior motives and that's completely out of character for him. Not only is it a cheap excuse to feature him in the movie outside of flashbacks but it also serves to pander to fans (mainly girls) who don't really understand these characters. The fans who don't really know anything outside of memes and cosplay. The fans who have never even touched a comic book. The movie goes out of it's why to throw fan service to people who aren't even real fans at the expense of the characters. I hope they fix this in the sequel.
Yeah, it's not like she was fleshed out in episodes like "Harley and Ivy", "Harlequinnade", "Harley's Holiday" and later "Mad Love". Sure, she started as Joker's whacky sidekick, and there was always a sexual element to her character, but it didn't take too long for her to become something more. And the innuendo in the DCAU were always more clever than and subtle, because they had to get past the censors.
I'm pretty sure Captain Boomerang's whole thing with the unicorn was added with the reshoots, seeing as Deadpool had the exact same fetish. It's pretty pathetic how badly DC wants to emulate other movies. You can have humor in a dark movie, but the humor itself has to be dark. That's what makes SS so bad, is that it's trying to have really light-hearted humor in a visually dark movie about villains. Oh, and let's throw in so many pop songs, that it actually gets annoying. In Guardians, the songs were used sparingly, which made it really fun when one would start playing. In SS, they play approximately 50,000 songs in the first two minutes, and they don't match the tone of the scenes at all. This movie just gets worse the more you think about it, which is a common trend with DC films.
There is lots of interesting things to do with the premise there are many motivations for villainy. and so they could actually get along or despise each other for those reasons. Think of Spider-Man's Villains a good few of them are not actually "evil" they often have a variety of motives for their actions, Like Doc Oc will do stuff for science alone sometimes. There is also the suggestion that Spider-Man has gone off the rails sometimes as he just suspects someone has endangered Mary Jane or his Aunt May (for example) and yet it turns out in certain cases they had no intention to do them any harm at all. I think that point came up with both Venom and Doc Oc before. Captain Boomerang might simply like the attention - other might do it for money or excitement or even group-think reasons - like gangs or Cults. So yeah Villains are oft described as the engines of the plot - so perhaps they needed a smaller cast and a bigger engine. Oh and I don't Mind Harley dressing grunge - I like it it reminds you visually of her separation from the Joker through her dress and can be used as an effective visual metaphor - in fact when ever she runs off to play with Ivy like she often does - she should dress differently. As for her Humanity - it's been implied in some sources even before the Joker was made into an immortal that his dunking in some chemicals gave him some added durability and healing abilities and he's nearly as strong as Batman despite his weaker frame. so Likewise Harley.
I would be willing to give these films more of a chance if every time I even voiced any discontent, I wasn't dismissed as a "Marvel fangirl" who is somehow missing the hidden meanings. Look. It's fine if you enjoyed this film, heck, even if you believe these are masterpieces, but please stop dismissing critics because they don't feel the same way about the DCEU that you do.
Dude, I wanted to leave after 20 minutes. I would have if I hadn't been with friends. While it turns around ever so slightly towards the 3rd act, I don't think I would have even gotten that far had I seen it alone.
This is all I fucking see online. "It had problems but I enjoyed it" is basically as far as anybody goes with defending this movie. At least Batman V Superman supporters put effort into explaining how their movie was secretly brilliant and we were just fanboys who didn't get it. All Suicide Squad supporters give are non-arguments.

It was fun. I personally had a much better time watching than Dawn of Justice, which left me speechless on how bad it was. To be honest, that's all I ever wanted from the DCEU, was just to have some fun watching one of their movies. If Wonder Woman and Justice League ends up sucking, then WB may have to end it there.

I would say Deadpool broke open barriers that films before were scared to do. Of course most of these films nowadays are cliche, but at least we are telling filmmakers to let them express their vision how ever they want to no matter the rating. Despite that some are not always a good ideas.
I cringe whenever some fangirl says "I could understand how you'd not like it if you didn't know the characters" meanwhile they didn't even know anyone besides Harley Quinn and the Joker. And even then they only know those two from Hot Topic shirts and don't really understand their actual characters at all.
Just wait for the sequel to come around when it'll have a R-rating and WB/DC thinks that'll solve the problems of the 1st because FOX's Deadpool was a huge success on being R-Rated. Good review by the way while not great, it's way better than Man of Steel and BvS.

Suicide Squad is a rare care where I come out of a movie just pondering "where do they come up with this junk?", And about that opening statement, sadly, we can't tell if certain viewers are seeing truly good comic book films that respect the essence of the source material, and are just well-made movies in general, or if they're just looking to satisfy their fix for loyal, copy-paste adaptations with what i'd like to call Fanboy Appeal Pornographies (F.A.P.), films that exist to feed all of those "source material faith" libidos. I have to ask now: for every single adaptation that has looked so different from what they're based on, were the enormous changes in design really that big of a complaint to begin with? I mean, if it still gets the point and appeal of the source material, should it really matter if they decided to give it an massive overhaul from the aesthetic point of view?
Careful with this one. Our review of this got pulled from youtube for copyright claims because we used clips from the movie. DC Warner Bros are pretty relentless on this one for some reason. Nicely done as always though.
Funny enough, a lot of people considered this the best DCEU film so far, I actually consider it the complete opposite. The studio interference fucked this film over and butchered what could've been a much better film. Many characters got cut scenes (that were filmed already mind you) that really lessened the excitement of seeing them, ESPECIALLY Jared Leto's Joker, God, what a slap in the face to both fans and him (he put so much time and effort for his total scenes to be cut down to around 10 minutes. I've only seen screencaps of the novelization, but I could tell already it could've been a better film. That being said, I still enjoyed the characters, action, comedy, and if you have a straightforward plot, then I'm gonna be craving good character especially. Like Marvel, most MCU films have straightforward plots, but I watch for characters (and action, comedy, pacing, etc.) MoS & BvS still rock to me tbh, but I do worry in the case of WB's involvement, this film suffered worse studio interference than BvS! But hey, Geoff Johns is pretty awesome, hopefully he could put things in check.

I am not judging Jared letos joker until I see him in the solo batman movie (if he is in it ) I dont think anyone can judge him yet but when he was on screen I thought he was unique and different from all other on screen jokers and I really want to see more from him

Originally there was going to be a Justice League Dark movie with characters like Constantine, Zatanna, and Swamp Thing directed by Gullimero Del Toro. They took ideas from that movie and put them into this movie. There are two animated movies that are about the Suicide Squad. Batman Assault on Arkham is basically a Squad movie with Batman in it. Then there is Suicide Squad Hell to Pay. Both movies portray the Squad better than this movie.
I understand that filmmaking is considered an art form and as such is open to criticism, but despite that isn't a movies purpose to entertain? Seriously, is it such a crime to enjoy a movie even if it is considered bad on every level by a "professional" film critic.
I will try to see this on DVD or something one day. It´s just to bad to hear this. I don´t want to sound like a broken record but maybe DC are in to much of a hurry. First they jumpd to Batman v Superman in there second movie and then as a third do this with the villians who mostly had fought Batman but Batman was´t as well established in B V S so that we get a understanding of his villians. I heard that The Joker whould appear as this one guy who had encountred and meet Batman and was´t just knocked out like everyone else. But as it sounds like Joker was just mentioned and not in the movie. I did´t expect Batman to be in it but DC described that Batman were playing the boogeyman for criminals so they whould always be on alert for him. I don´t know what people have against build up but I whould just be happy if they had gone and done Man of Steel 2, then a Batman movie and then maybe another one, Wonderwoman and then something where all three of them meet. And sorry just to have Batman fight Superman becuse it´s cool dose´t make it a good reason to have that as there first meeting on screen.
The movie exceeds in its characters and their moments. While nothing else really works especially the fan favourite characters while the lesser characters steal the show. After this, i want to more El Diablo in everything.
Captain America: Civil War and Deadpool were the only really good comic book movies that came out this year. I hope Doctor Strange turns out to be good as well.

When I went to see this. I crossed my fingers and kept saying "please be better than batman vs superman!" Well it was and I had fun with this movie. This is far from perfect and I've seen much better this year. I am fully aware of its flaws. Like The Joker is virtually pointless, the villain isn't that menacing (but I could see where she was coming from and why she wanted to kill some people) so'd characters like killer croc weren't given much to do, and a few others. However I didn't mind the story being predictable or the changed joker and Harley's relationship. now before I get attacked hear me out! The film takes somewhat of a risk doing so and throws in a little surprise. Besides while the joker is a terrible person and he's crazy it has been established that the joker does care about Harley in other mediums. Plus him saving her you could argue he needs her help with something. Plus what saved this for me was that it seemed that these people were having fun making this. The cast and characters were another thing and besides we can all agree Viola Davis was one bad ass Amanda Waller. Here's how to describe my experience with this and batman vs superman. The b vs s I felt like I left a funeral or a really boring class. Suicide squad I felt like I left a down played party. Not one where you dance a lot just one where you see a few buddies, share a few drinks, and shoot the shit.
I'm *really* late when it comes to this movie. I still haven't seen it yet due to real life complications, but I was always under the impression that Suicide Squad is an example of how detrimental studio interference is. I doubt it will be nearly as bad as Fant4stic, but it probably won't be that great in it's own right. I'll still see it for myself, but I'm expecting a what I call "Sonic Unleashed" scenario to where it's still not good, but a step in the right direction.
I can't say I agree with your opinion here as I thought the movie was really good. Not perfect by any means but definitely good. I loved the characters and there development aside from killer croc who sadly doesn't get to do anything here. And I feel like this joker was fantastic. I could go on in more detail on why I love this movie but my point simply is that I did like it. I'm not going to shout about you being wrong or anything as you are aloud to not like it even if I do think your opinion is incorrect. Regardless I enjoyed it and think it was probably one of my favorite movies this year. Though Doctor strange and rouge one aren't out yet so...
