Summary of UHF RC systems (hardware)

In this video I summarize the results of the individual long-range UHF RC systems solely from a hardware perspective.
The two stand-outs are the Sherrer LRS and the EZUHF system from Immersion RC.
Of course the hardware is just part of the story... Part 2 will check out the manufacturers performance claims by examining just how well these systems actually work.

Always enjoy watching videos like this Bruce. Already have selected my UHF of choice, but still interesting to see the others and hear your perspective. Too bad you didn't have the JR Module version of the EzUHF, for a Taranis user it's a godsend; you get 2.4 and UHF in the same radio without any plugging in or out, and without any bulky external boxes. I guess it may be engineered a little more modern too.

OrangeRX is really the bargain basement edition of the older generation of OpenLRS. The latest stuff is really quite nice and IMO shouldn't be lumped together with what HobbyKing is pushing. DTFUHF has much better OpenLRSng hardware available for both ground and air. The software is some of the best stuff I've worked with. You are definitely missing out if you don't have experience with this stuff.

Great set of videos and it's much appreciated Bruce,i'm looking forward to the next set in this series. Oh it was good to see what Dragonlink had to say about your review on their system,maybe a couple of the others might do the same in the next series but i'm not holding my breath. ;-) Thumbs up.

I've read claims that the EZUFH system has noticeable latency but DragonLink doesn't. I hope the issue of latency is covered and sure it will be. Nice to have Bruce around to give a open review of the systems available.

Hey Bruce, love the quality of the videos. Are you considering adding the EzUHF module version to the list? I'm curious to see the difference between the 'old' metal box version and the plastic module, if there is any in terms of performance.

Bruce, you've done a stellar job at reviewing these UHF systems, but I think you missed a very serious contender in the UHF market, the Rlink, or as it now know as the MFD Link. If you can, please get a set and review it. It is a very nice system in my option.

Bruce, really disappointed you passed on testing the better versions of OpenLRS. DTF UHF gear is superior to Orange in every way and is still very reasonably priced compared to almost everything else on the market. It's the clear winner in a value shootout. Highly recommend giving it a look and adding it to your comparison.

Hmmm, very interesting first stage look at these systems. Must admit I have been planning to purchase the Dragonlink system, but was holding out for your feedback, and glad I have. Not a huge surprise with Arkbird, I have the FPV OSD system & find the programming via transmitter very frustrating & inaccurate. Looking forward to the bench test results. Thank you Bruce.

What is a good first transmitter that is not insainly expensive but still provides good performance that I would not out grow instainly, I have a few small quad's such as the Hubsan x4. I am currently gathering the parts for a full sized quad and an not sure what to look for or get as there are so meany options on the market.

I used the EZUHF JR system for a few months but could never get more than 2-3 Km before hitting failsafe, even with good quality antennas on Tx and Rx. Switched to Dragonlink and the problems ceased: now I can fly my quad out to 12 - 13 Km no problem with 50 to 60% RSSI remaining.

Thank you bruce! I have an arkbird uhf and never used it. Its resolution of all of the channels is very, very bad! servo's turn in like 10 steps... And the noise!! It pushes all other bands away! Anyways I'm looking forward to your results.

Love my EZuhf ! I purchased the 2w Version and have had great service out of it. DL was on my list but can’t seem to find any on fpvLabs. I could get used one but prefer not to plus after further research I can’t justify the higher cost of DL. Exuhf hasmore Receivers available as well and at half the price. My understanding is DL run by Mike I believe may have taken a government contract and won’t be making anymore units for consumer hobbyist strictly government sales. That just a rumor I’ve been seeing pop up here and there and also other companies are being pushed back by government agencies to stop sales to hobbyist. Again rumors.

Interesting to know that according to you EZUHF & Scherrer LRS have the best hardware engineering! But the question is now does having the best design hardware engineering is enough for having the best performances...

ABMNS PRODUCTION EZUHF. IBCrazy did a nice review a year or two ago. I've been using EZUHF for sometime now & found it reliable. It would be nice if their configuration software provided more flexibility in freq and power selection but its more flexible than the Scherrer setup and most other systems. The Dragon was always known as the poorer design but it seems popular in the US. I have to use 459MHz so that limited my options straight away. At the time only OpenLRS offered an off the shelf option until ImmersionRC were persuaded by a UK retailer to add this freq but in the UK firmware they also limited its power and removed the dual power switch option which was annoying. Its interesting how they all use off the shelf transceivers.Good preview by Bruce.

+ABMNS PRODUCTION after so many reviews, i ended up with EzUHF because IBCrazy reviewed it to be the only system which was not affected by RF interference, diversity system and UHF scan method.
@stewjw
@stewjw 8 лет назад
+James Balagtas After saying all that I found their EZUHF 8 channel diversity receiver works well but I have a dodgy EZUHF 8-ch Lite receiver which I only just recently noticed keeps cutting out when provided with fast control movements. At first I thought it was antenna orientation on my planes causing issues-its an odd one. I do like the look of the TBS CrossFire setup but its only just been released. I did find TBS's early modded Lawmate video transmitters were not very reliable but I expect that is more down to the poor Lawmate quality issues. I found in the EZUHF setups IBCrazy'a dipole antennas work really well (the included antennas provide poor range), better than my home made attempts I also use the Diamond SRH771 Antenna (SMA) on the transmitter (be careful of Chinese poor quality clones) which is attached to a transmitter support to keep it away from the radio to avoid any interference.
@jbx907
@jbx907 8 лет назад
+stewjw agree, dipole are full wave antennas compared to the stock antenna of my EzUHF diversity rx. i dont have a good diamond whip antenna yet, im using the rmilec whip antenna lol. i haven't noticed any control cutout on mine, do you think its signal loss or just latency problems, i feel the 2.4ghz have less latency than UHF systems. If the antenna is affecting the electronics of the radio, it could be another cause of being cut off, the power in the radio must have a capacitor, 0,001uf near the the power if the module. im thinking of making a moxon antenna that rchacker showed in his videos, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1YkHGjWyMQI.html looks similar to the one recomended sold by ibcrazy. radiation pattern suits long range, more in front and sides

Dragon link a "Prototype" you old man!! LOL .. Most of distance records have been done with DL , even going to almost 'Space" on Funjet! most of FPV Racer pilots use it and it gives "analog" RSSI unlike other two.

The review, to be of any use, must consider the firmwares. For example, everyone agrees that the HK Orange, with its factory defaults, is a piece of crap. However, when this system is flashed with the well known flipflap firmware (www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2037442) , it gives you one of the best and cheapest long range system. This is just an example. Other criteria should be considered such as closed systems that you can't tune nor repair nos improve with better antennas versus open source systems with easy hardware access for repairs, tuning, modding, etc....
@artemnikitin2806
@artemnikitin2806 8 лет назад
orange stuff is crap, I am using DTFUHF gear for a year and it performs flawlessly. so far the longest I made it is 24miles with no failsafes and RSSI in the 70% since mile two and on. 24miles was more the copter limitation i had only about 30% lipo left and I landed at a safe location.

staslig You'll still be able to compare the CrossFire to these systems but 868MHz is a little different to 433 in terms of its characteristics and the Crossfire system offers more features/functions than most of the long-range systems tested this time around.
