If Tories are calling Sunak a "pint sized loser", why can't the opposition say it? That's a double standard isn't it?

Scotland voted 62% to remain in the EU, Northern Ireland also voted to remain. We were dragged out against our will. Brexit is an unmitigated disaster. Scotland is welcome to rejoin the EU, England isn't coz of the way the so called UK government has treated the EU with contempt
@kevinduggan201
@kevinduggan201 Месяц назад
If the UK were to rejoin the EU, I don't think the attitudes of the Tory government or even the press will play that much of a role in the decision-making process. It will be a somewhat technocratic and dispassionate cost benefit analysis. Demographic changes in voting blocks mean that most lf those people who voted for Brexit are dying off and being replaced by a more pro EU demographic. So even if we take public opinion into it, the argument would fundimentaly be, you can't rejoin because your dead parents didn't like us even so public opinion fluctuates across europe all tje time.with regards to the EU so.i don't think this would play into it. But more.importantly england was gaslight into thinking that tje EU and not deindustrialization and neoliberalism were to blame for falling living standards. By permanently barring Englnd from rejoining you send the message that you can use the EU to punish people for being conned into making a stupid decision. And that the oligarchs who pushed this can get away with it. If they get away with Turing the UK into an ecconomic basket case they will turn their attention to other EU nations and do the same

Fully understand your anger, but even if a new independence referendum were to be held and were successful you would still need to apply to join the EU and meet all of the necessary requirements. Sadly it is going to take many years or even decades before any of the UK is back in...

2012 was dire! We had an unbalanced Tory coalition, with the Tories making massive constitutional changes, inappropriate for what should have been a _caretaker_ coalition government and basically ignoring the Lib Dems. They had a show referendum in 2011, based on allowing the single worst kind of electoral reform possible, just to say that they'd supposedly honoured their agreement with their partners, and they imposed homicidal levels of austerity on the nation, which have been killing off at least 30,000 people a year, that's 600 people per month, ever since. Trust a conservative to be distracted by the window dressing.

How about asking people "when you voted to destroy the country, you tanked the £ and it'll never recover without rejoining the EU, but to rejoin we have to take the Euro and due to what you did, it's a no brainer."
@SonOfViking
@SonOfViking Месяц назад
Lammy is correct to say "we are not going to rejoin the Single Market or the EU Customs Union", but not for the reason he thinks. This is not a realistic (or even legally available) option that any political party can choose as a policy not to pursue. In fact it is not an option at all for a third country, and understanding why it is an impossibility requires only even a basic understanding of international law in relation to treaties, the legal principles of jurisdiction and jurisprudence at any level, as well as the function, role and constitution of international courts to acknowledge this as the fact that it is. But then, an exceptionalist failure to understand international law, what it is, how it applies to you, or even why it applies to you at all, is something that seems to unite all Britons, regardless of their politics or ideologies, as a race. "Rejoin the EU" is indeed a worthy ambition and I wish you guys every success in that aim, but unless you first agitate for your country actually to join reality itself in the first place then ... well, deep down you know the rest of that sentence.
@alanbarker2279
@alanbarker2279 Месяц назад
I think you underestimate David Lammy - he knows full well that there is no magic Rejoin option. The UK will become a member again, sadly this lies many years in our future and will be undertaken just as if any other 3rd country applied for membership. No, in fact our application will be held to far greater scrutiny because of our dismal actions in the previous decade...

@@alanbarker2279 Well the accession process is the same for all candidate countries. 6 clusters with some 35 chapters that all have to be closed with the consent of EU. There is no need for greater scrutiny since it is all about the implementation of the EU acquis. Any European country that complies with the Copenhagen criteria can apply. There is of course a chance that any EU memberstate will veto UK again. Or that a member country has grievances with UK that need to be solved. For example Croatia has had long-standing border issues with Slovenia, especially over the Piran Bay boundary. Between December 2008 and September-October 2009, Slovenia blocked Croatia's EU accession over these border issues. On 6 June 2010, Slovenia voted to accept the ruling of United Nations arbitrators on the dispute, removing this obstacle. The process of EU accession negotiations is the time period, in which it is determined for each candidate country, in how much time and with which regulations it will adopt the EU Acquis, and how the candidate country will put the acquis into force and implement it The candidate country is required to adopt the EU acquis as a whole. In order for a country to fully adopt the Acquis, it does not suffice to pass legislation, i.e. laws and directives. Within the framework of the 1995 Madrid Summit, the candidate country is also required to establish the necessary legal and administrative capacity in order to put legislation into practice in the most effective way. In other words, it is required to establish institutions or departments that will implement the legislation and increase their capacity of implementation. The EU Acquis is the total body of EU's legal system and rules which are in force. The EU acquis has been constantly evolving. It includes the founding treaties of the EU, those that amend them, secondary legislation (directives, regulations, decisions), treaties signed with the third countries, the decisions of the European Court of Justice etc. In addition, legally-binding or non-binding acts/proceedings that were adopted within the EU framework, i.e. inter-institutional agreements, resolutions, notifications, recommendations, guiding principles, joint actions, common attitudes, declarations, conclusion proclamations and other acts that were adopted within the framework of foreign security and defence policy, common attitudes, signed contracts, resolutions, proclamations and other acts that were adopted within the framework of justice and home affairs are also part of the acquis. Furthermore, international treaties that were concluded between the European Communities/the EU or European Communities/the EU and member states and international treaties that were concluded by member states regarding the Union's activities/operations are included in the acquis. The 35 chapters are: 1- Free movement of goods 2- Freedom of movement for workers 3- Right of establishment and freedom to provide services 4- Free movement of capital 5- Public procurement 6- Company law 7- Intellectual property law 8- Competition policy 9- Financial services 10- Information society and media 11- Agriculture and rural development 12- Food safety, veterinary and phytosanitary policy 13- Fisheries 14- Transport policy 15- Energy 16- Taxation 17- Economic and monetary policy 18- Statistics 19- Social policy and employment 20- Enterprise and industrial policy 21- Trans-European networks 22- Regional policy and coordination of structural instruments 23- Judiciary and fundamental rights 24- Justice, freedom and security 25- Science and research 26- Education and culture 27- Environment 28- Consumer and health protection 29- Customs union 30- External relations 31- Foreign, security and defense policy 32- Financial control 33- Financial and budgetary provisions 34- Institutions 35- Other issues On what issues is the candidate country not allowed to negotiate? Adoption of the EU Acquis, establishment of administrative structures towards implementation, compliance with the Copenhagen political criteria and Copenhagen economic criteria cannot be negotiated. That means among other things adopting the Euro as soon as the country meets the convergence criteria. On what issues is the candidate country allowed to negotiate? The candidate country is allowed to negotiate on when and how the adoption of the EU Acquis will take place. In exceptional cases, transition phases, temporary derogations and requests of additional assistance can also be included into negotiations.

Please be reminded that there is no such thing like "re-joining" the EU but if Britain wants to join the EU again, it will have to start from scratch on. Britain managed to vote itself out, but won't be able to vote itself back in. Not yet to talk about the criteria's that need to be fulfilled, before being able to join the EU/27 member states, i.e. "accepting the Euro €, requirement that a state has the institutions to preserve ***democratic governance and ***human rights, has a functioning market economy, and accepts the obligations and intent of the European Union." Just a little reminder: The UK's applications to join in 1963 and 1967 were vetoed by the President of France, Charles de Gaulle. While it was true that Britain's economy, like many others, was struggling to recover from the high cost of WW2, De Gaulle had personal as well as economic reasons for not wanting the British around the table. During and after the Brexit referendum campaign, Britain has not stopped to display their hate against the EU as well as campaigning to leave the ECHR for the simple reason that it contains the word "Europe" in it.. The EU/27 member states certainly have reasons enough, to reject any future application for a UK candidacy as a future EU member state and it will not come as any surprise whatsoever. Furthermore, one cannot join the EU like taking a bus, a taxi, a train, a plane when it suits the political and financial agenda and then tell the EU to f* off after having milked it financially for decades. * Human Rights: - isn't it the UK with its Tory government and their friends from the far-right business company Reform UK Ltd, who are campaigning to leave the ECHR and by doing so, are taking away the Human Rights of its population? There already is the first hurdle and there are more of them i.e. not respecting international laws and by breaking them. Who on earth would like to have a country like that? The UK would be well advised to join Belarus and Russia instead.
@michaelrch
@michaelrch Месяц назад
Having to adopt the Euro is reason enough to not rejoin. I didn't want to leave in 2016, but given the conditions that we would rejoin under, and the political direction of the EU now under Von de Leyen etc, on balance, I think the U.K. has better opportunities out. Sure, fix the trading relationship etc, cosy up on scientific and medical cooperation etc But it would be net bad to rejoin the EU now.

The spin on the EU is highly misplaced. Firstly the EU is facing right wing governments across Europe and changes will take place soon. Also attempting to join the EU would be without the Exceptions for the Euro, Schengen . The European Armed Forces etc. we also have to consider the views of the EU which may think that the UK was a constant brake of their plans. The truth is it is delusional. We will mo doubt rebuild close alliances with countries in Europe but any attempt to join the EU will likely fail.

So for Labour to wait until they win an Election is sensible politics. Only then & after they've moved the weather will it make sense to talk about rejoin. Then the first thing Labour will do is talk about what terms they can get from the EU. Then move. So this talk is politically naive, even rubbish. Get better guests man. Such as Purkis. UK can only get the same terms as any country that has joined recently. There are no opt outs. Everything can be found on the homesite of the EU commission wich oversees the accession process. Google "How to join EU" and use the link leading to EU. Then read everything behind all links there. Before any accession process can start UK has to comply with the criteria to join. The Copenhagen Criteria. For example your debt of some 2.5 trillion is way too high. A benchmark would be some 60% of GDP while UK has about 100,2% of GDP. A country that wishes to join EU has to adopt the Euro when it meets the convergence criteria and join Schengen.

The Brexit Referendum was an advisory one - most people did not expect it to succeed, consequently many could not be bothered to get off their arses and go to a polling station and vote against it. Many others voted leave as a protest vote - never believing that we would actually leave. If someone could wave a magic wand and allow a referendum to be held which would undo article 50 and allow us to proceed as if we had never left then I believe you would have 70% in favour with the 30% made up mainly of rabid xenophobes and racists...

The distinction between an advisory and a binding referendum is important because it affects how the government must respond to the outcome.
