A playthrough of Virtual Xperience and Atari's 1995 arcade-style motorcycle racing game for the Atari Jaguar, Super Burnout.
Played through the Championship mode using the Punisher bike. The Punisher becomes available after getting an A rank in the Championship mode.
This video was recorded from an original Atari Jaguar console through a Framemeister upscaler by an XCapture-1 card. Be sure to watch it at 720p 60fps!
Super Burnout is an extraordinarily impressive game, and to qualify it by saying, "For a Jaguar game," would be an huge disservice. No matter the hardware, this was a technical triumph in 1995 - it truly give us a rare glimpse at just how much untapped power the Jaguar had under its hood.
The game itself is extremely similar to arcade games like Super Hang On and Riding Hero. Super Burnout is a simple motorcycle circuit-racing game, and it uses the super-scalar style graphics pioneered by Sega in the mid/late 80s to render simulated-3D graphics. The tracks are pretty varied - some lend themselves to flat-out speed, while others focus much more on tight, technical curves and turns.
The real difference that puts Super Burnout waaaaaay ahead of the pack is the speed and the detail on display. It runs at a locked 60fps at throws around up to 1,000 sprites on-screen at once. Notice how densely layered the sprites making up the scenery are, especially when compared to Super Hang On or Afterburner? That sprite count alone puts it somewhere between the Sega X and Y boards - wow. The framerate also makes the game control better than you'd ever imagine on a digital controller - there's no lag whatsoever, and (unlike Sega's home ports) it isn't twitchy-sensitive to the point where it's unplayable on a standard D-pad.
The music is excellent, and it's of surprisingly good quality considering it was all stored on a 2 megabyte cartridge. If I had to guess, I'd say it's using a mod-style format for its music like the Amiga was famous for.
And it supported two-player split screen! It still runs at 60fps and retains every bit of its speed in this mode, though playing in this mode does slightly reduce the draw-in distance. It doesn't really hurt the game at all, as it's still more than far enough out that you can see all the upcoming turns with no problem.
If only Atari had had more games like this, the Jaguar might have stood some sort of fighting chance at creating a niche for itself. It would've given it a way of distinguishing itself from the PlayStation - I highly doubt you'd ever see a 2D game running like this on Sony's platform! As you can see from the end credits, Super Burnout was created by a very small (but extraordinarily talented) French development team (Shen, who also did the Adidas Football PS1 games published by Psygnosis). Apparently, these guys only had weekend access to the publishers Jaguar development kit tools, and still managed to put the game together in about a year.
I would have loved to have seen this ported to the popular consoles at the time, but it was probably for the best that they didn't. It'd probably have to be cut back pretty dramatically to run as smoothly on anything but the PC.
In my mind, there's no question: Super Burnout is the best game that was ever produced for the Atari Jaguar. Its looks and sounds amazing, and it plays as good as it looks - it's a true arcade-quality racing game on a home console.
The only other motocycle racing game, regardless of system, that I like anywhere near this much is Hang On GP for the Saturn, and still, the Saturn title is a distant second. Damn, Atari - you guys were so good at undermining your own chances that nobody else even got the chance to compete with you.
And thanks Charlie Cat for the request. I've been meaning to do a video of this forever, and when you asked I finally felt motivated to enough to record it. I'm not very good at it i must admit, but I hope you enjoy the video!

Super BurnOut isn't just the best game ever produced for the Atari Jaguar: it was also a jaw-dropping showcase piece for its 2D sprite scaling capabilities. This seriously rivals the quality of Sega's mid 80s super-scalar graphics. Make sure to watch at 60fps!

This, AVP, Tempest 2000, Hover Strike, & Battlesphere are definitely Jaguar titles worth playing, even if the emulation usually sucks(which is sad because I do really want to play these so badly). Too bad a lot of crappy decision making from Atari themselves would end up killing the thing, not to mention by this point many other video game companies had already stopped taking them seriously & the development tools sucked as well. It had some incredible potential, but while it does stand as somewhat of a surprisingly good console, it sadly can't hold much before it fell down harder than even the PC-FX.

Wow, the system seems to be able to handle sprite scaling with ease!!! If Atari had made a deal with SEGA...imagine Jaguar being released with just 4 games: Outrun, Afterburner, Powerdrift, Galaxy Force...what a bang it would make!!!

Nice to read some praise for the game and the Jaguar. The game was universally criticized by the press to be too oldfashioned and behind the curve. It's is not real 3D, but some old 80s sprites pseudo 3D. IMO the gameplay is quite limited, though decent fun. The 2 player Split screen is nice but has no AI controlled bikes. There are some other flaws and overall the gameplay felt like a throwback to 8bit racing games. I think Checkered Flag on the Lynx provides a bit more depht. We bought this game in 1995 and still had quite some fun with it. The most impressive thing about is it's super smooth&speedy scrolling/scaling.

Great music in this game also. Really great. It has a subtle 80’s vibe and matches the game perfectly. I don’t think it comes across on a phone or tablet. The drums and bass really kick on a good system.

Hey NC, Just finished watching your video with Super Burnout. Thank you for taking my request and what an excellent job of you doing this upload. This game really showed the power and the sprites of the Atari Jaguar. Too bad it wasn't available to represent the console sooner, or it would've convinced many mainstream gamers during that time period it wasn't an inferior unit at all. But glad that the homebrew scene is giving it new life. Just not enjoying the skyrocketing prices though. Thank you again NC. Keep up the great work as always. Anthony..

This just shows how much better the Jaguar's software lineup could have been with Atari Games/Tengen arcade ports like what the Lynx got. Imagine a Jaguar port of Race Drivin' in 1993 or 1994, it would have made the SNES and Mega Drive look like crap! But no, instead they decided to make Checkered Flag, a bad clone of the much more demanding Virtua Racing.
@Lightblue2222
@Lightblue2222 5 лет назад
Yup. Club Drive proves that. Its like Hard Drivin but a more open world with decent framerate. Hard Drivin is a better game to play, but it just goes to show the Jag was way ahead of the 16 bit.
@F1JV
@F1JV 4 года назад
ATARI should have done perfect ports of Xybots...Vindicators...Race Drivin’...Roadblasters...S.T.U.N. Runner and an update of Warbirds for another use of the JagLink besides just DOOM. Even though many Jaguar owners probably owned a Lynx as well & probably had those games already(that was me)...a PERFECT port of these AWESOME ATARI arcade games would have been AWESOME. Though we did get some INCREDIBLE updates...Tempest 2000...Defender 2000...Missile Command 3D...Breakout 2000...+ some GREAT brand new games...AvP & Iron Soldier & Rayman & Hover Strike(for me at least...after getting past the queezy).

This game has been created by a French studio at 29:12 for the peoples who are not French I can translate to English : 'With Super Burnout you saw what we can do with jaguar with 3D Bitmap. The next game will show you what can we do with sprites' so there was a second game from this studio in development. As I know Songbird sell Jaguar games near to be finished or as demo. Perhaps the second game of this studio is published by them ?

Sadly, that second project (Nexus - a.k.a. Stellar X, the very same name you see in billboards across certain tracksin Super Burnout) was confirmed by programmer Olivier Nallet to be lost, as its source code went missing after Shen ceased game development. That one was going to be a Raiden-esque shooter with a more aggresive artwork.

Even without demonstration I might dare say that the Jag has superior 2D capabilities to the Saturn, just because it uses a more traditional sprite system (but not completely traditional) instead of a blitter system like the Saturn which has more potential for slowdown. EDIT: the object processor still draws to a line buffer so maybe not.

@bangerbangerbro 6 лет назад
Jimmy Biggs I'm sure that most jaguar games use every processor for something.
@roberthanthonymartinezrive7383
But here's the kicker about those processors: If you feed your project with too much lines of assembly codes, it goes hairwire and the project comes tumbling down. That's why i've much respect for those who programmed for the Jaguar, due to the shit conditions the hardware impossed on them.
@NintendoComplete
@NintendoComplete 4 года назад
@@bangerbangerbro Many of them actually didn't, if you can believe that. Iirc, the Jag had a 68000 processor that was intended solely to handle input routines. If you don't know it, the 68000 was a popular CPU used in lots of 80s arcade machines and in systems like the Genesis and the Amiga. But that then led to some less-than-scrupulous, super lazy developers doing cheap and dirty ports from 16-bit machines. Those games tended to rely almost solely on the Jag's 68k - the CPU intended to handle the controller was being used to do the entire game. Seriously. All that power, and for what? An experience straight out of 1988, but in 1995. I mean, have you seen Zool? Blegh.
