The Band Perry saga has always been so fascinating to me. As you said, they were one of the biggest acts in country music around 2013. They had 4 number one country singles, with 2 of those being on their last country album "Pioneer". They could have made an awesome third country record but went the complete opposite way.
@maxi-me
@maxi-me 3 года назад
I don't find anything particularly fascinating about it. As with most country artists over the past decade, Nashville was just a launching pad for their dreams of pop stardom. Unfortunately no one told them Rick Rubin was no longer the top 40 starmaker he once was. Also superb country talent rarely translates into anything more than mediocre pop product.
@MVTX
@MVTX 3 года назад
@@maxi-me I think that The Band Perry could have done what Florida Georgia line did with "Meant to be" and just kind of flirt with the pop charts. Same goes for Maren Morris for the song "The Middle". Both of those songs were really successful but FGL and Morris ultimately still do country. I also though the Band Perry's pop aesthetic was very forced and unnatural.
@maxi-me
@maxi-me 3 года назад
@@MVTX I suppose, if just to suppress their longing of being left out of the mainstream. The best decision would have been to stick to their guns. Florida-Georgia state line is not the band they should take cues from IMO. Those guys are entertainers not artists. Not a putdown, they're great at what they do, but they have aspired far beyond simply flirting with pop. They'll make a fabulous Vegas act someday. TBP on the other hand were steeped in Appalachian folk, which was once an important element in the humble beginnings of Nashville. THAT'S what makes them fascinating. They had a lot of potential to preserve that tradition In country but sadly record label speculators exploited their youthful curiosities and derailed their burgeoning career. I only hope they will return to those roots, even if they spend the remainder of their career on the county fair circuit.

Funny story about "Bobbi with an I": My mom and I went to see Phil Vassar and Craig Morgan about 8 years ago. It was around Christmas time and was really laid-back (it was in a pretty nice theater for small-town Indiana). They sat on stage together the whole time, shared the same band, and traded songs and stories all night. After the first few songs, Craig Morgan said something along the lines of "Hey, we're really glad that you all came to our show. We want to play what you want to hear so let us know" and IMMEDIATELY someone stood up and yelled for "Bobbi with an I". Phil just sat there and looked at the person and slowly said "We were gonna play some Christmas songs, and THAT'S what you want to hear? No one on this tour so far has requested "Bobbi with an I" that fast." Craig Morgan almost fell off his chair, he was laughing so hard. It was an awesome show. Katie Armiger opened for them, and it was just a real down-to-earth group of people on that stage. Awesome songwriting and musicianship from everyone. Craig Morgan is an absolute power-house and incredibly under-rated as an artist and writer in country music. And I got to meet Phil Vassar after the show. As a huge fan of him as a writer AND an artist, 15-year-old me died a little inside that night. He wrote so many songs from my childhood.

I have seen huge legendary acts live like George Strait, Garth Brooks, Brooks & Dunn, Hank Jr. etc, and I've seen big modern acts like Aldean, Bryan, Church, FGL, ZBB etc. but I've never heard anything like the final verse of "If I Die Young" when The Band Perry had the packed crowd at Tiger Stadium sing the final verse by ourselves. Just thousands of people all singing along in harmony to this huge and beautiful song. It was such an incredible moment and I've never heard such a large crowd nail that in that way before. The band seemed so genuinely moved and emotional after and spoke to us about how much that meant to them. Such a great moment and The Band Perry made such great country music for a while. I guess I'm glad they're pursuing what they want, but I can't help but be disappointed at what they've become, personally.

It was very much moving out of the heavily effected, high compression, gated reverb era of the 80s and into the 90s pop superstar vibe that we Millennials know and love so well. To say that New Grass Revival were out of place is a bit of an understatement. Judging by the sample of "Live Forever", it really sounds like a Mutt Lange-produced song, specifically the "We're gonna live/We're gonna live forever!" in the chorus. I miss The Band Perry's harmonies and bluegrass meets country-tinged sound that made them so loved by their fans. Their first 2 albums were really good, but then it seemed like they went in the Taylor direction of going pop. That was a huge misstep... I don't know what happened!

This one was super interesting, a lil weird yes, but who doesn't love a lil weird in their life??!! Lol When you said Trace Adkins I was sure you were gonna say "I Got My Game On" that starred the comedian Rodney Carrington!! Its just as goofy as Brown Chicken Brown Cow, and weird as they may be--- they absolutely crack me up!!! These kind of videos make my day!! I end up making a list from your lists to go check out these crazzyyy songs!!! LOL But for real--- thanks to you man... Okay Grady here is my idea, I love your content and I think you do a wonderful job, but I would love for you to do a deep dive on specific country artists. Particularly those from the 90’s back, like Jodee, Martina, Mark Chesnut...ext. (how they got there record deals, why they exploded/why they tanked). The back story there carriers, I honestly I think it would not only be amazing content, but give you such insight into how Nashville works, and has worked. You creat so much good content, but I know we all want more, and you can give so much more. Maybe a different long profile on each. I would love that, and you would become such a n amazing country historian at the same time. Wish I could help with that...such a fan, and you get the audience so well. Just want to see the bridge to where we are now.

Wow, this is fascinating. The Property Clones always make me a little uneasy. Their music, is even stranger and cringier. That said, I love Big Green Tractor, and so does my wife. The melody and the seriousness he sings with, most definitely has a good vibe. It's definitively less weird than She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy. On a separate note, remember when people got annoyed in the mid-00s with people like Kenny Chesney, Zach Brown and others going Buffett-style gulf and western island music? Man, I miss that sound. Great video Grady. Definitely one of my favorite channels on RU-vid.

Grady, you missed a lot of the older stuff. Ray Stevens is the king of comedy country music since the 50s, and he still releases new music. The Streak and The Mississippi Squirrel Revival are good ones. One of his later ones is Taylor Swift Is Stalking Me. Roger Miller had one called You Can't Rollerskate In A Buffalo Herd. Little Jimmy Dickens had May The Bird Of Paradise Fly Up Your Nose. Toby Keith's Beer For My Horses. Big and Rich had one. Cowboy Troy had I Played Chicken You're The Reason Why Our Kids Are Ugly by Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty. Some Beach by Blake Shelton Trashy Women by Confederate Railroad I'm Gonna Hire A Wino to Decorate Our Home by David Frizzell She Only Bitches When She Breathes by Freddie B I Think She Likes My Willie- Paul Overstreet, but Danny Griego redid it. Wal-Mart Girls by Danny Griego Queen of My Double Wide Trailer by Sammy Kershaw Dancing With A Man by Rodney Carrington Cleopatra, Queen of Denial by Pam Tillis It's Hard TomKiss The Lips At Night That Chew Your Ass Out At Night by the Notorious Cherry Bombs She Got The Golkdmine (But I Got The Shaft) by Jerry Reed Pound Sign by Kevin Fowler Pistol Packing Papa-Jimmie Rodgers very old raunchy song. My Uncle Used To Love Me But She Died by Blake Bergland, Colter Wall and Nate Hilts from The Dead South

The Band Perry was the first country band that I listened to, back when I was first discovering country music. I liked their two country albums. I like Live Forever and Stay in the Dark. I think they’re good songs on their own, but it is a bit strange and jarring when you compare it to how they used to sound. I always wondered what happened to them, and why they didn’t put any more albums out, but never bothered to look into it. Well, now I know. I don’t really keep up with what they’re doing anymore, but I still do enjoy their older songs.

GRADY. Not a weird song, but one of those weird country-radio sounds, BEFORE the beach-country boom from Kenny Chesney and such. Clay Walker's "Then What?" WAS MY JAM BACK IN THE DAY. Also, can you make a new-modern Classics video? Late 80's into early 90's one- or two-hit wonders. Stuff from Shenandoah, Little Texas, Blackhawk, Boy Howdy, The Tractors, Confederate Railroad, Hal Ketchum, Lee Roy Parnell, Mark Chestnutt, John Anderson (and that awesome album he put out with the help of Dan Auerbach), just because this was my favorite era of Country and I'd love to hear you talk about it!
