@slartibartfast2649
@slartibartfast2649 Год назад
@@marcwire9332 Turbos are not suited for two-strokes. You need the more predictable boost across the RPM range that a supercharger provides (as boost is directly dependent on engine RPM), especially with two-strokes having such a sudden and defined power-band. Also, for single cylinder engines, the inconsistent and low exhaust pressure becuase of the single combustion event per crank revolution (or per two revolutions for 4-strokes) is not ideal for consistent operation of a turbo. Finally, imagine putting two-stroke exhaust through a turbo; the soot and oil would quickly ruin the efficiency of the turbine, and the unburnt fuel could become very dangerous becuase turbos get *really* hot, kinda like a bomb. When you think supercharger=inefficient, you are probably thinking of a roots type. Twin scroll (Lysholm) and centrifugal (as used here, I think) types can actually be quite efficient. Centrifugal types are just the compressor side of a turbo driven by then engine through a hefty gearing ratio, rather than by an exhaust powered turbine. For a small engine like this, the efficiency gains of a turbo are so marginal that the instant boost and reliability of a supercharger are worth it. Turbos have a parasitic drag of their own, in that they increase the pumping losses of the engine. I don't know exactly how bad that would be in this case, but I do know that it would have a negative impact on the "free-breathing" of an engine that is meant to rev as high as this one will. I also think you would struggle to find a turbo suitable for a 50cc motorbike engine, since there are so many more variables involved in turbo design, such as exhaust flow rate and pressure for max efficiency, operating flow rate range, power producing regions, compressor output static pressure, flow rate etc. The supercharger is just the better decision for this application, in my opinion.

That "alcohol", what you had there is no alcohol. It is water! Alcohol, no matter if it is a metanol, or etanol will mix 100% whit gasoline. But, there is a little thing you should know abaut. Alcohol and gas will mix, but theyr bond is pretty weak. Water and alcohol bond is very stuff and good. Thats why if you have a gasoline that is made of gas and alcohol, and there gets any water, all the water and alcohol will separate out of the gasoline. Just for you to know that thing. I noticed that you are getting a lot of supercharger drive belt flutter at higher RPM, a little on acceleration and a lot on deceleration. I think you need a idler on the driving side of the belt (where the unsupported run is longest) otherwise when the load goes up and the belt temperature goes up, the belt will either throw off or disintegrate. Time around 23:52. Also if you think about future improvements in airflow, the optimal exit from a centrifugal compressor is a diffused angle of 7 degrees, this will allow the air to get to the inlet at the best flow. Sudden diameter changes cause deceleration in the flow which leads to interference and turbulence which will affect the way fuel is pulled from the carb jet. Still think direct fuel injection is the way forward.

as you dont mind complicated,,hows about two carbs, a small one that opens before the larger one,so as to run well at lower speeds then the larger one to come in and open once up to power,,the smaller carb could be fit inbetween the large carb and the intake, only a thought but it could solve youre problems,

@@joebloe9901 i think it would be easier to just fit a small seperate carb rather than using a twin choke set up or the four barrel type car stuff, the smaller carb could be made to close entirey as the bigger carb takes over

Can you get E85 over there at all? Stoich is 9.8:1ish, so it's near dead-nuts in the middle of gas and methanol as far as AFR goes, and you can do away with the time spent purging the system - if you're using methanol-rated components E85 won't do anything to them. Just a thought based on your musings at the end of the video.
@nhytg376tgyuu765gjmg
@nhytg376tgyuu765gjmg Год назад
E85 is available in Scandinavia and cheap. But I think you need special 2T oil (castor (not Castrol)) since ordinary oil won't mix well with E85.

@@nhytg376tgyuu765gjmg I've turned some rotaries running in e85 with premix, Klotz makes great stuff for alcohol blends. But as nerd already noted he'd already have to be running something like that with the methanol, so should be no big deal.

@joebloe9901
@joebloe9901 Год назад
@@nerd1000ify Then why is he concerned with the carb metering jets in the vijeo? Roots blowers have the carb on the intake side. I missed something.
@nerd1000ify
@nerd1000ify Год назад
@@joebloe9901 Back when the engine was running a roots blower Alex did indeed have the carb on the intake side. That blower had seals that were compatible with the fuel, on this one he's worried that they may not be, or that fuel may sneak past the seals and contaminate the special oil used in the friction drive that spins the impeller. Carbs can work on blow-through setups so long as they are referenced to manifold pressure. Alex has achieved this by routing all of the carb vents to a pitot tube between the blower and the carb. This would not work if he was using gravity to feed the fuel (boost pressure would prevent fuel flowing into the bowl) but he's using a fuel pump with a regulator that also references to manifold pressure. As for the metering, the main issue here is that the carb is too big for the engine. This is why Alex sleeved it down (leading to the shenanigans with the 'step' in front of the needle jet), and it's also why he needs different needles, at the moment the relative depression in the venturi isn't enough to pull sufficient fuel flow through the carb.

In a way I'm in two minds about being excited as to "Can't wait to see what the end result is" and wanting this to continue as long as possible for enjoyment/entertainment purposes. But.. In the end, I hope everything does work out for you fella 🤞, and, maybe, once completed, what the next project, new/modified/tuned motor you come up with. To me every time he opened the valve it seemed like the revs climbed to a flow limited rpm, somewhere around 18-20k or so, and held there. Crazy how fast he's spinning that thing, though I'm guessing peak power is quite a bit lower, probably 12-15k range.. Although with more flow he could potentially spin it even faster and make some crazy power numbers, but the more top end he gets, the more difficult it's going to be to start and idle.
