Hiking on the Superior Trail with my dog "Henry". The Twin Lakes loop is 6.7 mile or 10.6 kilometers. That climbs and descends three ridges in picturesque Bean and Bear lake. Once you reach Bear Lake overlook. You will end up with an elevation gain of around 1000ft. ( 304 meters ).
The first day had high and humid temperatures. Which had us searching for water. To end the day with thunderstorms. Join Henry and I on our epic adventure.

It was brutal taking off the pack. Then take the camera out of the pack. Set up the tripod. Close the pack. Film climbing up the steep climb. Come back down. Put everything away. Then hike the same climb in the heat and humidity. I haven't sweated like that in a long time. I could not drink enough water to replace the water coming out of my pours. And poor Henry wasn't sure if we were coming or going.

Another great trip video Marine! Perfect lunch spot. The humidity is a drain. I feel your pain on that one. I think it’s crazy the price of backpacking meals these days. And it’s not just mountain house. All the good ones have increased their prices. I’m going to be looking for alternatives like Knorr Rice sides, etc. when I run out of my stock pile. At least in a couple months I will start taking real food and cooking it because the temps will be much lower.

You are so right. With fall coming. With the cooler temperatures. Even though it might be heaver load to carry. I have replacing dehydrated food. With real food. Taste better, and better for you. I believe protein is the best source for energy. Not carbs. It is protein that repairs those aching muscles after a long day of hiking. It is always good to hear from you Dan. I hope Christine is doing well.
@backpackingadventures4813
@backpackingadventures4813 Год назад
@@AdventureswiththeMarine I can’t agree with you more on the high protein low carb. I always have a high protein and low carb foods while on trail. It’s tough to find backpacking meals that are aren’t all pasta or rice. Look mainly for keto meals because they are definitely low carb. Next Mile Meals is all keto and their meals actually taste good. Packit Gormet has a few lower carb choices as well as RightOnTrek. Christine is doing well now. All test came back and she is cancer free. We’ll keep going day by day. Keep up the good work on the great videos! 👍

Thank you so much for the great video, Marine. Since you are a seasoned backpacker, I would love to see a video on the gear that you take with you. I’m constantly trying to get my gear to be the more efficient. These days I really have to pay attention to how much I carry. Here in southern Missouri for the last couple of months it’s been in the 90s. It’s been so hot I have not gone backpacking one time, because when it’s this hot I can’t even make it between water stops. Thanks again for your wonderful video. God bless you. John
@AdventureswiththeMarine
@AdventureswiththeMarine Год назад
I have not done much backpacking in the summertime. Because of the heat and the biting insects. But now I will be doing more of it. And because I getting back to hiking more in the summer. I have really scaled back on my pack load a lot. Of course each season will have a different pack load. Without food, water, and camera gear. My pack weight was around 10lbs. But with two 32 0z. water bottles. Food. My food did not weigh much. But Henry's did. His pup tent weighs around 4 oz. But his bedding ( which is fairly light ) weigh's a little over a pound. But the killer was the camera gear. Which weighs over 6lbs. So if you are not bring a dog. Or filming. You can really downsize. For me. The biggest weight savings. Is with down top and under quilts. A light weight hammock. And the biggest savings is extra clothes. I just brought one extra pair of light weight socks. I did not even bring a rain jacket. Because I run hot and take a long time to cool down. The rain would of not been an issue. Now that you have mentioned it. I think I will do a series on pack loads for each season.

That is one of those sun shirt. With a synthetic tee shirt underneath. If I don't have on one of those shirts in the sun. I would be burnt to a crisp. The sun is not a friend to me in my latter years. I really didn't need to wear long pants on this trip. I am highly sensitive to poison ivy. But the trail was like a super highway. At 17:26, we see your carved spoon. What tools did you use and where to get them?
@AdventureswiththeMarine
@AdventureswiththeMarine Год назад
The tools that I am using are expensive. And I would not start out with them. The Knife that I was using was made was made in a forage at Kharkov in Ukraine which has been destroyed in the war. The axe is made in Sweden at forage by Julia Kalthoff. My favorite part of carving spoons is the axe work. Find a old hand hatchet. Have someone or you sharpen the edge till it is raiser shape. That it will cut paper. The trick is that it always need to be that shape. You don't use sand paper or stones to sharpen the axe after that. That is the big mistake everybody is making. What is suppose to be used is a leather strop. You can get them cheap with rubbing compound on line. You use this every time after using the axe. And it will always be Sharpe. With the knife. The blade must be thin. And it must be very Sharpe. Again. Always use the strop. Nothing else. A lot of times. I will use the strop to sharpen while carving.
