16:45 its because you're holding the thought in the so-called "surface thought bank", whereas your actual focus is elsewhere, thus when you are distracted and you try to come back to what you were thinking of, the neurons in your brain don't have a strong enough connection to whatever your thought may have been to jump back to it. reguarding the thing about forgetting what you're saying, think of it like a refrsh button for your brain. when you enter a new room or encounter a new situation, your brain lets go of things it thinks are not *that* important so that it can keep up with new shit. love you guys.

The whole forgetting stuff thing is probably due to the fact that you store conversational topics in your short term memory most of the time, when something is deemed more important or urgent to consider (ie someone interrupting you making you think what they have to say may be more important than what you were saying) your short term memory dedicates itself to that. Usually a maximum of around 6-7 things can be remembered in your short term memory, but this depends on the individual and can be less resulting in a more forgetful mind, sleeplessness and stress also affects your ability to 'lock on' to topics.

Neural pathways and what makes up "a memory" get more strengthened the more you think about them. Therefore when you just come up with an idea it hasn't been strengthened very much. Additionally if you try really hard to recall something, the reason you can't sometimes remember is because basically your brain can't find the exact Neural pathway you just thought of and tries to find related ones and a lot of stuff similar to the specific pathway. It then comes to you later usually because your brain isn't working so hard and stumbles upon it naturally

Your brain is constantly processing. It's beneficial for survival to update your awareness on a regular basis. You might have a thought, but something more prevalent will make it's way to your attention. When you enter a new room, your brain reassesses your current situation and puts your old thoughts in the back of your mind. Unless you consciously focus on your previous thought, it will be forgotten in favor of the new information.

I could be wrong, but I think that the reason why you forget what you were doing when switching between rooms is that your mind wants to survey the new environment to ensure you're safe, so it puts a lot of things on the backburner, since your current conversation is most likely not a matter of life or death. Again, I'm probably wildly wrong, but I think that's why.

It's so great that they brought up the idea of forgetting things, because I'm listening to them while I'm taking notes on memory. As for why it happens, I'm pretty sure it's some type of encoding error where your brain accidentally "decides" that the information you are processing is not important. Usually, if you think something is important, your brain will transfer it to short term memory. In the moment, you try to think of it, but your brain basically fucked up, and now you forgot. Good shit, human brain. It's not like you have anything else to do (besides processing literally everything in your environment).
