Sam was in the wrong this episode. Dean said he’d handle it if it was Benny. It wasn’t Benny but Sam got Benny to the point where he had to kill Martin.
Even if Benny was 'now' a good man, Amy could also be a good woman. Dean was really hypocritical about this. Sam was in the same place for Amy as Dean was for Benny. She killed her mom for Sam.
I'm glad you mentioned the writers here. I think they had Sam go against some fundamental character traits this season to push the drama and I don't agree with much of it.
I sometimes wonder if Sam would have actually gone through with killing Benny in the moment. He's not the type to strike first ask questions later as shown by his several discussions here with Dean, although his jealousy is mucking him up right now. He asked what Dean needed to be sure and gave him the time he asked for up until Martin clobbered him, and if Sam had been with Martin Elisabeth would never have been put in danger. This ep is full of ifs, ands, and buts! Also Benny was a killer for decades before dying and until Dean brought him back and he chose to stop, Amy killed several people out of 'necessity' and then chose to stop. Can you really say which was worth letting live over the other? I can't blame Sam's jealousy over that but using Martin was overboard.
I feel like Amy and Benny aren't really comparable. Amy was a girl Sam knew for a few weeks at most as a kid, who they found out was literally the one killing people in the hunt they were on. Benny was someone Dean spent an entire year depending on and growing close to. And since he got back from Purgatory, Benny was just minding his business and trying to live his life. Sam had no real justification for his attitude towards Benny. He was just mad Dean trusted someone else when he was being so open about how little he trusted Sam. Which like...if you wanna be trusted Sam, maybe act in a way that is trustworthy once in a while.
I love how you alwasy try to see BOTH Sam and Dean's side. Neither character is perfect. I'm a fan who loves both. Also, did you notice that Don is played by the same actor who played Billy in "Battlestar Galactica?"
Holly shit your right! I’m a big BSG fan but the haircut threw me off! Actually kinda makes sense when you remember a lot of actors from BSG have roles on this show, the most famous and popular being Crowley who was Romo Lampkin
Dean acted with Benny (giving him the benefit of the doubt as long as he could) as he did with Castiel in season 7. He is loyal to a fault. But he didn't know Amy, so no loyalty there, and he didn't trust Sam at the time because of Hallucifer. Sam is justified in his frustration with Dean's actions. Killing Amy was not necessary and the fake distress call from Amelia (another Amy!) was a really shitty move. But all the drama this season (to date) is heavy and unnecessary. Or course, the writers chose to make Sam frustrated and pigheaded at the same moment when Dean is finally a little more open to rational discussion. "Drama makes good television". Not always.
Thank you! Too few people comment on how shitty it was for Dean to use a girl Sam cares about against him. It’s one of Sam's top fears that something happens to some he’s dating. This was a very low blow.
Benny spent decades eating people before he chose to stop to come back with Dean. Amy killed several before choosing to stop of her own volition. Which one should die if any?
@virginiaclarke5295 Amy said she had stopped, because Sam was going yo kill her. She expressed no remorse and would have killed again the next time her kid got sick. Benny had stopped killing long before he ended up in Purgatory. Amy had to die. Benny did not.
I really love your reactions! And if you put aside the idea that writers made this arc for the sake of drama and catharsis after, then Sam can be understood too. And Dean. And Benny. I love all of them very much. And yes, they are so battered by life that sometimes they make bad decisions. In my opinion, some people blame Sam here too much :) Either way, the drama is at its peak here. Can't say I don't love it. Drama is like death, and Sam and Dean's relationship is like a phoenix, reborn after every failure. And for that it's worth watching. Every time I am glad to see that their love is stronger than all obstacles.
Not all monsters are monsters we’ve been trying to get Dean on this page for a long time now he finally is and Sam seems to have forgotten I get it’s going through a lot But He has forgotten every life is a valuable even the monsters
I never thought this had anything to do with Amy more Sam just being jealous that Dean could makes friends outside of him. Both Cas & Garth are more Dean's friends than Sam's, hell Dean met them when Sam wasn't around, but Sam approves of them. But I think Sam is jealous that during their year apart Dean made a strong friendship and connection with someone, in way making the horrors of purgatory worthwhile Sam on the other hand had a relationship that didn't last year. Just to remind you at no point has Dean said he wanted to ditch Sam for Benny and while you could make the argument that Dean had been a jerk since he got back but Dean stopped! For 2 episodes Dean stopped being an ass and wasn't hostile towards Sam even when he brought up purgatory, so things were good between the brothers. But Sam is one who was obsessed with Benny, despite Dean being in contact with him one time, and the fact that Sam is always the one to defend the idea of good monsters except Benny because he thinks his brother like him more than him, its that simple of a petty reason.
I agree Sam's totally jealous and that's the writers excuse here for having him completely go back on things or obsess like he normally wouldn't. I still think Dean's pre meditated plan of having a distress signal from Amelia 'just in case' was a downright dirty thing to do to someone with Sam's history, despite the situation.
Sam was with Amelia when Dean came back. He left in the middle of the night. I agree that the writers had. Oth Sam and Dean acting out of character this season to create conflict.
Sam's jealous of Benny, I think. Because Dean trust him so much. I think he's suppressing his guilt too for not looking for his brother but what did he expect Dean to double cross Benny and killed as soon as he was out. Benny is a goof friend to Dean and a true one he doesn't have many good friends, but Benny was a true friend to him.
Blech, more Amelia. 😒 I hated pretty much every decision Sam made in this episode. You don't have to trust Benny, but how about you trust your brother, whose instincts are ridiculously reliable. If he's saying Benny didn't do it then he's very likely right, and deserves some leeway. All Sam had to do was say, "okay, let's me AND you go with Benny to put down this other vamp." And he could have told Martin to get lost, couldn't he see how unstable Martin was? But nope, jealousy of Benny and guilt for Purgatory motivated him into bad decisions. Ugh! This episode is really tough for me.
"Amelia you saved me" When the hell did that happen?! That was Ruby not Amelia! Throughout these entire flashbacks Sam has been perfectly fine shown no physical or emotional signs of distress over losing Dean, him getting with Amelia was a distraction and yeah its okay to have a relationship like that but it was never going to be anything serious. That's why Sam left because even though her husband Don had lied he still would've been more honest and open with her than Sam ever could and Ameila deserved that. I'm just sick of the writers having Sam hype up this relationship like it was one of his best when it clearly wasn't and most of the good parts were simply for Sam to have a normal life and not really about Ameila herself.
not to mention every single time his feet arent aimed at the fire by Dean or Dad, or even Bobby, Sam shirks his responsibilities(look at kevin the only 'good' human besides dean who knew kevin existed) and he has the gall to say that he shoudl be trusted?
There was Sam's crazy overreaction to hitting the dog and while Amelia guilt tripping him into keeping the dog was wrong it did cause him to stop spinning and start to settle a bit. After seeing how desperate Sam was to save Dean from hell I think that it's safe to say he was distressed losing both him and Cas even if they barely showed it. The writing for these two episodes really strained character traits.
