The Crane 3S can hold up to 6.5kg, which means it's going to get heavy and you'll need some sort of support system for longer days of shooting.
In this video I compare a handful of different methods to take that weight off your arms a bit, and the pros and cons of each.

Doing something similar with a 2” pipe clamp W/eyehook on the crane3SE with easysling arm and a hook vest + plvid spring arm works great, still getting used the the smooth walk, but I agree a support system is 100% necessary thank god I got that before the gimbal

Great video. Needed this info as my back is hurting after walking around with the crane 3s a few days without support. Was looking into the minimax (as the vario 5 is too expensive imho), but i fear that doesnt have enough capacity. The DF option is a good alternative, so thanks for the tip and info!

I have the Ready GS and I used just one arm to help carry the Crane 3S. Super awesome! A little pricey but definitely does not break my back at the end of the day. I had the Steadicam knockoff, the Easyrig knockoff and they are just not design to save your back. So, bit the bullet and bought the Ready Rig GS. Scott, when you say there is no system that will eliminate the up and down motion, well, there is, that's the Ready Rig GS. Thanks!

I'm just glad there is a community of people that agree that this thing is heavy. I thought I really needed to hit the gym after trying to use this zhiyun crane 3s with my canon c70. I could really only comfortably hold it for one shot at a time and then set it down for a break. I'm thinking about trying the vest and arm option...originally i was thinking i would do the ring and easy rig style option also...can't decide.

Great video with great solutions Scott. But two things I would like to add. I have been using a dual handle spring grip not the one from Digitalfoto but they all work the same, you are right that you will need to take the walk as you need to do without that grip and it will damp the up and down movements. But you those arms need to be calibrated till they are flatten out centered to the sides to work correctly, they may not lean up or downwards if you want it to do its best job. The problem using the flycam steady rig this way you do with out the pole, just using the adapter will be hard because it will be so top heavy, the pole will help a lot because of more balanced setup having the weight on the bottom instead of having such top heavy setup. that way you will get rid of the forced side swing and twitch, kinda like the Dynamic Balance problem. Plus you can put the gimbal into under sling easily just by turning it upside down to get the lower angle shots. P.s. I am not complaining, just two pointers that could help. The west with the spring arm is a really great solution as you say, quick setup and it just works.

@chlowden
@chlowden 3 года назад
I use an Aigle steadicam arm & vest attached to the 3S Crane via Manfrotto 123 rotule and the 3S easysling handle that fit perfectly. The rotule makes getting the rig off the arm relatively easy and it is designed for far greater loads than this. The total gimbal rig weighs in at 13 kgs, so I have a heavy weight arm to take the load. I hope this helps someone
@chlowden
@chlowden 3 года назад
Just to add that this is Red Epic MX with cine follow focus and lenses, so lots of accessories. I found that on heavy rigs, the Zhiyun extra powerpack is both a better weight distribution and gives the motor badly needed extra power.
@chlowden
@chlowden 3 года назад
Another issue i have discovered is hanging cables. The gimbal was nodding when I walked but this attenuated slot when I managed hanging cables . Also, with heavy rigs, balancing is so critical and so is fiddling with modes on my smart phone to get the smoothest result. I shoot on 50mm at T3.2 at widest so I am not making my life easy but I am starting to get acceptable results.

Hey Scott! Great video! How do you like the quality of the digitalfoto vest vs the easyrig minimax for non gimbal work? Is it worth it to pay the premium of the easyrig?
@ScottDumas
@ScottDumas 3 года назад
I want to say the Easyrig is 5-10% nicer... but I was honestly very impressed with the quality of the DF vest. I know lots of people don't like recommending "rip offs" of the original, but not everyone can justify $1,000s of dollars more just out of respect, haha. If you've got no ethical qualms about it, I'd recommend the DF vest. Hard to say which will hold up better over 5-10+ years of heavy use, but it's comfortable and feels safe/secure.

Very helpful! As I look into these rigs that hold my Crane 3S inverted, I'm trying to troubleshoot an issue. When booting up, my crane always spins around to have the camera facing the sling handle, whereas in your video, and other amongst other users, I see that it's able to face away from the handle. Does your crane do this when you boot it up, and you have to pan it to face the correct direction with the joystick every time?
@ScottDumas
@ScottDumas 3 года назад
Hey, thanks for watching. That is strange though- I had it freak out and go upside down once, but usually if I boot it on in underslung mode it stays where it should.

Great information. Are you planning to test the Thanos Pro system for the Crane 3S? I am wondering if the lower attachment point would provide better weight distribution because it uses your legs instead of you upper body?
@ScottDumas
@ScottDumas 4 года назад
I considered trying the Thanos but I'm waiting for a more trustworthy mounting setup with a counterbalance system and pivoting gimbal type handle like a glidecam... as it is, the camera just on top of the Thanos/steadicam arm is too high up and limited in the height range you can comfortably use it, you're basically stuck at that one position. Comfort wise though I'd say that style of vest is pretty equally as comfortable as an easyrig style vest more or less.

The (any) ring grip will be similar in experience and results to a dual grip like the Ronin M, but with a ring grip you'll probably have more places to mount monitors etc, as well as being easier to use with something like the Easyrig.

Not entirely to be honest, but it would depend a bit on the situation (space available, and if you have crew with you to work as a spotter etc). It's kind of the norm when you start working with larger cameras though and I don't think it's necessarily worse than other large gimbal options. Nothing against the you or the video, but every time I see some one show off the DF spring arms/ 4th axis I get mad, because they literally stole the design from Scotty Makes Stuff's Thingiverse feed where he had been sharing his invention/design with basically the equivalent of a Creative Common non commercial redistribution license, because he also made them for people for a reasonable fee. Despite this they were the first to take his design and then shared it with a bazillion other Chinese knockoffs, and not a penny ever goes back to Scotty. The DF variants are of much poorer quality, and Scotty has made better designs since, but I personally will never buy that particular generic 4th axis, and avoid anything from DF as this was one of the original products that put them on the map.
@ScottDumas
@ScottDumas 4 года назад
I do totally get that, and I respect Scotty for what he's made (and his great name)... I don't doubt the quality either. I used this particular version for this video because it was what I was able to get my hands on, and I can't unfortunately go around buying everything to review. But yeah, I just hope that buyers who value things like true quality and innovation can have the sense on their own to make the smart decision when buying from or supporting one company or another. Sometimes in this market, unfortunately, availability and price become the deciding factors (although I don't know the price of Scotty's to be honest). It's the same in the market as a film maker or photographer I think. There's always someone cheaper who might "steal" some jobs away based on price or insane offers alone, but if the quality is there for the "original" product and/or photographer, and the company or person behind it is solid, I do hope that they will still find their customer base as well. Sorry if that's a weird convoluted metaphor haha. Hope that makes sense!
@billyoung9538
@billyoung9538 4 года назад
@@ScottDumas I understand, and know that companies do this to one another all the time. The crucial difference for me in this circumstance was that the license was clearly marked on thingiverse, and it's beyond obvious they literally took every component and didn't even bother to change their shapes. The only significant changes were the casting material is a simple cheep plastic, they reworked the molds for that plastic, and instead of being tool-less they locked the gimbal in place with hex screws. This was back in the days of the Crane 1 V1. They still keep stealing his ideas even with these newer incarnations. I Noticed your version had detachable arms, quick release screws and they add the same interchangeable mount set up he added to his. With all that said Scotties are indeed about 2-3 time the price, but then he also sells all the parts like legos so one can piece together a bigger stronger system later. Also his spring systems are more affordable than some of the other options in video. I mainly bring it up to keep others informed.
