Border areas are super dangerous. Believe it or not cartel do not just kill vistors brings bad publicity and when they own all the bussiness ur going to it it doesnt make sense most likely some drug addict or just a random person who did this.
We quit vacationing in Mexico years ago when locals told us how the cartels had bought the hotel we used to stay in. The people really didn't want anything to happen to us. We listened.
If anything you would probably be safer. The mexican cartels aren’t petty crooks, and they do not allow robbers to harass the tourists. It brings a lot of heat from the government who is forced to act. Police will generally extort you as well.

The man said it ' I will keep coming...' that is how some people live their life. Common sense will be NO NO NO where there is great danger I pass be it Mexico, Middle East countries, India etc... or even be it a RELATIONSHIP -toxic, emotionally unstable, personality disorder person on radar-DANGER, GOT TO GO. But some people have no issues exposing themselves to all type of danger the problem comes when those decisions affect others like children, family members that many times are left to face the consequences.
I am 73, I was born, raised and surfed San Diego & Mexico sites. We knew Mexico was always a dangerous place to go, surfing or not. Everyone knows that. They rolled the dice and lost. Ending up in a well has Cartel written all over it.

we had friends, many years ago who spent part of each winter in Baja. we all lived in Santa Cruz. Two 18 year olds went down and one went missing and wasn't found for two weeks. He had been beaten to death. Murder over a burglary? SOUND FAMILIAR?? It happens more often than anyone thinks.

I went to Baja as a youngster quite often with family since dad's family was there. Safe back in the 60's and 70's. Went to Mexico only 3x since--two were on cruises, and one was a large group trip to Mazatlan.
The Baja California travel guidelines specifically state do not veer off the main roads or go anywhere secluded because it is not safe. On top of that, all of the top 10 cities with the highest murder rates in the world are located in Mexico. This could have been avoided with the most basic safety precautions taken. I feel for the family. DO NOT take any chances in Mexico, its just too dangerous
Thats not even true at all. Mexico has a handful in the top 10 but there's also Venezuela and Brazil in that 10 that make up roughly half. Stop making shit up. Dumbass

I am in my 60's and for a decade I was a surf rat. All through high school I would be surfing at 4 in the morning before class. EVEN back then in the 70's BAJA California was very sketchy, dangerous especially to surfers. Back then it would be the Federales stealing stuff from surfers and even beating on them. I hate that this happened.

What these brothers went through and the terror of the whole thing just makes me cringe. Evil monsters deserve the same they gave these young men and the man. We have got to make example and go to extremes to stop the kidnapping and the killings in these countries that prey on innocent people. He lived down the street from Callum in San Diego, not in Mexico. He took pics of the coastline & sold 1 to Callum of that area. Where they camped... a very loose connection...
This is awful. 2 strapping Aussie guys - Callum was 6ft 6, professional Lacrosse player, living in San Diego for 10 yrs & engaged. Brother Jake, 6ft 2 & a doctor, about to take up a new hospital posting in Victoria. Was over visiting his brother & their mate Jack, a recruitment officer, Bout to get married in August & who holidayed in Mexico for yrs & spoke Spanish. They were down a very remote rd, only accessible by 4WD. They say the perps DID change the tyres on the car, so got the tyres b4 burning.. i can't understand how 3 big fit guys in 3 separate tents get shot execution style.. & leave "blood & dental parts" inside abandoned tents.. 10 yrs ago, another 2 guys from here in PERTH, were also murdered on a surfing trip in Mexico. Vaguely remember it was offduty cops spotting their van & calling to gamgs on the road ahead...

Stuff like rape is likely more common there. Lots of stories around. It's never been safe and now less than ever. Even in La Paz you have to watch your step these days. Remember, you don't really know what's going on. Visitors tend to have the idea that somehow they're magically immune.
Prayers for the family. We are sorry this happened to these folks... Stop going to mexico... Its not safe... Local police are paid by criminal groups to look the other way.. Even if the FBI steps in, the mexican police in charge of that area will male it seem like they are doing something but will only give the FBI the run around.. its happened before well documented and it will keep happening. Dont be a victim... Stay away... Mexico is going through social issues, it will take time to get better but not soon. Stay safe
Lesson learned: don’t always listen to the ‘local’ photographer… especially when traveling to somewhere sketchy like a camping area in Baja California, Mexico when you’re not really native to California and don’t understand a lick of Spanish.
No not rare. Last year a neice of mine was abducted and held for ransom. I don't know details. She is 19. She went there to party with friends. Some how she was saved. That's all I know. She was lucky but am sure traumatized. The thing is you never know if it will be you. Do not go to Mexico!!!!
