The guy, in the beginning, was a stand-up comedian named Sam Kinison. He was known for his loud, brass, voice and mannerisms. Bon Jovi was one of my first teenage crushes, he and Joe Elliott of Def Leppard.

Yes! He started as a preacher and he definitely carried that fire and brimstone delivery into his comedy career. I was in the fourth row of one of his shows. It was great. I can still hear him say, "MOVE TO WHERE THE FOOD IS!" 😀

I am devastated that the video version didn't include the breakdown. On the album version, at about the 4:10 mark, Jon gives us one of the greatest breakdowns in music history when he stops the song by saying, "I got, I got, I got, I got, I got, I got.. I gotta do it again. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. Hold on. I'm not done! One more time! WITH FEELING!" Also, this is pretty much the sound they were known for. You guys have just coincidentally done a bunch of their ballads in a row. Every hair band had a handful of ballads to keep the record execs happy (yes even Poison, Kiss and Mötley Crüe) but overall they were nitty-gritty rock bands.

There's a 60+ minute video made by The Vintage Tribute titled "The 80s: A Pop Culture Special". Very highly recommended, it will remind you of a ton of things that were awesome in that decade. Yet it's just the tip of the iceberg.

I'm 52, in '88 I was 18. The 80's were the best music decade. The New Jersey album was Bon Jovi's "comeback" after Slippery When Wet. They were huge again. Great tour also.

@@scottlafleur4148 I remember it as kinda both. 87 had a lot of big albums come out, and Bon Jovi kinda slipped out of the public fascination. You had U2's Joshua Tree, George Michael's Faith, INXS Kick, and of course Appetit for Destruction by Guns and Roses, which set a new standard for heavy metal. In just a year, Bon Jovi had become yesterday's news. Goes to show you how amazing the quality of music was back then. But yeah, Guns and Roses really shook up the musical landscape when they came out. All other mainstream metal became lightweight compared to them.

I remember when this album came out, they went on tour and my grandma got me tickets to their concert (that is so unlike her bc she didn’t listen to my music but she knew I had posters of Bon Jovi in my room, best surprise by her ever!) yes Bon Jovi’s music is just great memories ❤

Released in 1988, this was lead single released from their fourth album, New Jersey. It made it to Number 1 on the US Billboard. Just a great tune, with a great rockin' melody. Fantastic. Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️❤️ 🇨🇦 🇨🇦

New Jersey (1988) is full of hidden gems. Born To Be My Baby, Lay your hands on me and Living in Sin is another good one from the same album. Richie Sambora also loved to play around with the whammy bar in his solo. A lot of his solo from the 80s have some whammy bar tricks.

I went to the store to buy this the day it came out. It was so exciting! You are right. It was a 24 hour party, this time. You had to worry about school and normal teenage stuff but once you got a clear moment from that the world wasn't beating down on you like today's kids deal with. Sam Kinison was the man in the beginning asking “if this was going to be same old style video with these pretty boy bands?” … he was a very popular comedian in the ‘80’s and hung out with a lot of the rock bands then. You can see him him in a couple Motley Crue videos as well. “ I believe “ Dr Feelgood” ? He also had a hit video in the ‘80’s that played on MTV called “ Wild Thing” a cover by him with his comic version of it as he sings to the ex- sweet and innocent secretary Jessica Hahn , that had an affair with the crooked tv preacher Jim Baker back when he fell from grace. A lot of ‘ 80’s pop culture history there. But the video has over a dozen rock stars featured in it as well like … Billy Idol, Slash, C.C. DeVille, Jon Bon Jovi, Sebastian Bach, Steven Adler, Joe Perry , Steven Tyler , Steven Percy…

It's so funny that you see this as "a different side" when to me, this WAS Bon Jovi! This was just . . . so very much their wheelhouse and what they were known for. This banger, and Slippery When Wet, it's not that they didn't have soft songs (and I love their softer songs) but THIS is how I picture Bon Jovi--the hair, the moves, the fun!

I remember the hype on MTV for this first single off their second album "New Jersey". It was going to be released as a world premier and I had MTV on all day so I wouldn't miss it. God I miss the days when MTV actually played music videos.

To my favorite reactors on RU-vid: it’s so refreshing to finally see y’all react to the Hard Rock side of Bon Jovi!!!!! LOVE Y’ALL for that!!! I grew up on the “Slippery When Wet” & “New Jersey” albums in junior high & high school. Yes….the 80’zzzz we’re carefree & fun no doubt. I miss that time. They provided the cameras to the fans and invited them in to film. The guy at the begining was Sam Kinison a great comic that we lost way too soon. I love Bon Jovi and the tour for New Jersey was freaking awesome.

I first got to see Bon Jovi headlining the Monsters of rock festival back in 1987 on the Slipper When Wet tour when i was 16 years old and i was blown away, i then went on to follow them around the UK when ever they played over here and got to see them 34 times live. It really was an amazing time in life, sadly the last good song they released was It's my life and after a few dodgy albums my time following them around on tour come to an end. Now they seem to have become a line dancing band and i wouldn't go to watch them again but i do treasure my youth with fond memories of following them around because back in the day they really did rock and i will be forever grateful i was along for that ride.

Biggest thing to notice about this video, is nobody is on a cell phone!! They are all bonding and interacting. We had soooo much fun at concerts in the 80’s and early 90’s. No cell phones to video and take pics, we literally lived in the moment!! So sad that doesn’t seem to happen anymore. Bon Jovi does super fun concerts, if you’ve never been, I highly recommend them. I am sure they are still great, but no way you can go back to them in their prime! #purefun #80’sbaby #blessed #BonJovi. Richie and Jon are like a fine wine 🍷 they get better with age LOL ❤

Hey guys, enjoy the heck out of your content, I'm retired now, so I live vicariously through you, because I get a kick out of your reactions to "our" music..spent over 30 years as a DJ in radio, and it never gets old listening to the greatest rock music made, including Bon Jovi, they came along when I was worried about the state of rock...they helped bring it back to the forefront...where it belongs...I also have a T-shirt that says: "I may be old, but I got to see all the cool bands"...Rock ON you two!!!

It's not surprising that Cinderella opened for Bon Jovi during that tour, especially when you consider that they were discovered by Jon Bon Jovi himself which also explained the cameo appearance of Jon and Richie Sambora at the end of the video for their song "Somebody Save Me"

Back in the day Bon Jovi was considered a "chic band " atleast in my area but we would go to their concerts. Why you ask....there were 1000's of single chics there getting all worked up. And we were there to cash in on the Bon Jovi effect.....lol.

Loved that! You're right about experiencing music differently at that time. We did not have access to any type of music on demand, no playlists, no internet. We had to wait for it to come on the radio, go to concerts or go to the store & buy the record or cassette tape. It was a different type of appreciation for all the great music of the 70's & 80's (&prior) Notice how everyone was so into the show? - not a single person with a phone (because there were none 😆) ‐ GOOD TIMES!

Good group and song ,back in the day there was just such a lot of top class music. That period I was blown away by the Joshu Tree album by U2,just a monumental achievement and Justice for All album by Metallica,a masterpiece. Red Hot Chili Peppers were finding their feet.And cassettes were still huge.

I was a senior in high school when "Slippery When Wet" was ruling the charts. Our high school prom theme song was "Never Say Goodbye." I and everyone at my high school were huuuuge Bon Jovi fans. I can't hear that album without it bringing back images of my senior year in high school. So when "Bad Medicine" came out as the follow up single to "Slippery When Wet." It instantly became my favorite song. I remember the first day of the album release of "Bad Medicine," driving to my local Wherehouse record store (for those too young, that was the actual name of the record store.) and hoping they didn't sell out by the time I got there. When I got it, I was so excited to hear it, I plopped it into my cassette player and listened to the entire thing in my car. I was a little disappointed because other than Bad Medicine, the entire album was different from the rock anthemic songs of Slippery When Wet. After that, I kinda put away the cassette and didn't play it much, but as each new single began being released, I kept thinking hey that's a pretty good song. The when Lay Your Hands on Me was released right after I'll Be There For You, I was like, "Why didn't I like these songs when I first heard them?!" I guess I was hoping it would deliver that same sound as their previous album cause it reminded me of high school, which at the time, I had missed cause college life was a struggle at first. But as I adjusted to my new reality, I was able to appreciate the songs from the album. And now listening to it today, there doesn't seem like such a big difference musically, but even slight changes at the time seemed like such a big deal, caused it mirrored my own circumstances. I guess it goes to show how big a part music plays in all of our lives.

I saw them in concert in 1986, they were incredible and one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen. I was 18 and it was a great time to come of age in the 80s. Times were simpler and care free, no one worried about shootings or Covid. It was all about having fun.

Agree! I saw and met them in 1986 on their "Slippery When Wet" tour. Meeting them was both scary then the best! My neighbors were hard rockers so they hashed a plan o meet Bon Jovi. At university, the Journalism college was in part if the basement of our coliseum. They knew how to get from there to the "Elephant Room", the floor of the coliseum. University registration, schedules, and tuition payment took place their before the semester. Bands loaded in their for concerts. We snuck in and sat the dark bleachers for their soundcheck and warmup. It was so cool until my friend lost his mind and yelled for the band to play "Social Disease". The lights came on and we were told to report to the stage. I almost wet my pants! I thought we were going to jail! We met the band, I apologized and begged for mercy. After all I still had tickets to the show and my girlfriend was going to be angry twofold. First, because I got arrested and secondly because I met Bon Jovi! Fortunately the band and their roadies were cool about it. We watched them finish the soundcheck, left and returned for the show! I attended many concerts back then. They were affordable and the road trips for them were fun. I really miss those days!

the 80s were fun, no one was offended by anything, everyone got along for the most part. we all had fun. never been a huge Bon Jovi fan but another band that a huge stage production. R.I.P Alec

Not QUITE true. I distinctly remember there being Congressional hearings spearheaded by politicians who wanted to censor provocative song lyrics. Dee Snider of Twisted Sister was one of several musicians who testified.

While I love the sentiment, there were a lot of people offended at books and trying to ban them or kill the author, education was being too liberal for some and needed more Jesus, heavy metal was devil music and needed Congressional hearings, 2 Live Crew was arrested on stage for lewd lyrics, and AIDS was allowed to kill people because they thought it only killed gays. The cold war was in full swing. The US was supporting insurrections and military coups in Central and South America, and training terrorists in Afghanistan. Gang violence and gun violence were rising like crazy. The crack epidemic was decimating cities and prisons were filling beyond capacity because of it. But there was a lot of fun too.

I remember when the Slippery When Wet album came out. I got it on cassette and I listened to it on my Walkman at the bowling alley. We went all night bowling with a big group of friends. Had my jean jacket on and I thought I was so cool. Was a fan from then on. Man am I old.

Sam Kenison at the beginning of the video first hit the mainstream when he appeared as a college professor in the movie "Back to School" starring one of your favorite funnyman Rodney Dangerfield. Hilarious movie to react to. You'll also see Pauly from Rocky fame, Johnny from Cobra Kai fame....lots of recognizable faces.

I was born in 1970 so this was my music. Love it when you do the 80's rock/hairband! Life was so much cooler back then. Around here as long as you had a license you could get into any bar. Every bar from Pittsburgh to Cleveland was packed every Friday n Saturday night with bands playing nothing but this.

saw a ton of these bands throughout the 80s but my coolest experience was seeing Bon Jovi do an unannounced warm up gig at a club in Woodstock, NY in '88 prior to the NJ Tour. Less than 150 people and the "stage" was a 6" riser. Just amazing. Ended the night sitting at the bar with Tico (drummer) and Alec (bassist)

These two are so much fun! There interaction is terrific. Keep it up! He is a child of hip-hop and recent music and is just getting into earlier music and she loves the music of the 80s and other genres even though they were both kids at the time. The shouting man at the beginning was legendary comedian Sam Kinison. He had a HUGE following in the 80s and 90s. (And if you ever react to "Back to School" starring Rodney Dangerfield - which you really should, it's a classic - you'll see more of Sam.) And that double-handed thing? Joe Satriani does that too sometimes.

One of Bon Jovi's best! That's the late Sam Kinison ranting in the beginning of the video. Sam was comedian who was huge at the time (sadly, he died in a car crash at the age of 38). Sam had a great "scene stealing" scene in Rodney Dangerfield's "Back to School." It's a great comedy that you should react to.

I forgot about Sam Kinison being in this video!! He was actually a pretty good musician in his own right but much better known for his comedy. His comedy bit on world hunger will NEVER be bettered by anyone.

Jon Bon Jovi & Richie Sambora... MTV Video Music Awards... Livin' on a Prayer/Wanted Dead or Alive. Basically started the whole "Unplugged" movement that many of the 80s rock bands followed. You will love it, I assure you.

The part Rob talked about when Richie Sambora played the guitar with an unusual way of using the whammy bar, Richie Sambora learned it from his guitar teacher "Joe Satriani". Satriani does it a lot. I remember back in the 90's (I think 1996), Bon Jovi did a FREE gig in the streets of Cardiff in Wales. I was there and I threw my guitar pick onto the stage and Richie used it and threw it into the crowd (I didn't get it back). Lol. I can't find any videos of that day. Only photos. Great reaction, guys.

The lead guitarist is Richie Sambora. When you hear the cords and he's not picking watch his hand on the frets. He hits the strings hard enough to pick with his left hand. It's technic called hammering. Richie has his own album out. My favorite song of his is "When a Blind Man Cries"
