Mini pc seems really interesting as a desktop replacement. You can also just as easily take it with you, together with a drawing tablet. Get nice long slender bag for your keyboard and other things. Put it within a corner of your travel case, and have your system everywhere.

Thank you for covering the small form factor PCs on your channel. I got one and it has been a great complimentary machine for my laptop. I have been using it primarily for 3D rendering. It is also great for traveling. Knowing I could use the monitors and keyboard at my parents house during the holidays, I only had to bring the tiny PC and nothing more. While I still plan to get a proper desktop machine for content creation, I still need to finish taking care of other expenses, so this tiny PC has been great at solving my current needs at an affordable price and low power consumption. I only hope in the near future they start to incorporate mobile discrete GPUs as an option as well.

I think that it's a very interesting device, but, as I'm sure most people watching this channel are aware, it also depends on your use case. Like you mentioned, if you're mostly working in a stationary location then the mini-pc is probably the better choice over a laptop for all of the advantages you mention in the video. However, I know laptops are quite convenient for people who want that portability aspect, and that's usually why people will buy them. Maybe they want to do tasks on the couch while watching TV, or maybe they want to go to a coffee shop or the library. And, laptops are especially valuable to students at the post secondary level who need to move between different classrooms, buildings or campuses. As a personal example, I have a Lenovo Ideapad 5 Slim with an AMD Ryzen 7, 5700U that I bought 2 years ago for when I was doing my GIS Bachelors. If I had bought a Mini PC instead, I would have lost out on the convenience of portability that came with brining my laptop to all my different classes or working in different locations. So again, the video brings up some great points, and if you're just looking for a PC for doing light photo editing and day-to-day tasks with a similar form factor as the Mac Mini, but much more affordable, then the Mini PC pretty much blows the laptops out of the water. But in an environment where portability is more important, the consumer will probably choose the laptop. Anyway, great video! Very interesting to draw attention to the mini PC as an alternative for people looking for a laptop, or laptop equivalent, computer.

I just purchased the Geekom IT13. Two TB4s @40Gbs is simply fantastic for my needs. I like redoing the thermal paste and will get to that today. For more cooling, I've decided to keep the IT13 on it's side (where the heat pipe curves around to the exhaust) with an external fan blowing into the side. I'm considering a 3D printed larger case and add more quiet fans. Nochua's or similar. I just don't want the throttling as I do a lot of e-learning with Camtasia.

Hi there, very insightful video. Would you use this Geekom it13 over the A7 Ryzen 7940HS for H264 video edditing? Cheers 👍

Mini-PC are really affordable and portable than building desktop PC, i currently used BeeLink Ser5 Max 5800H with 1 TB SSD and 32GB RAM - i can't even maximize its full power given my use case ^_^

Is a very interesting segment, there is ETA Prime channel dedicated to that kind of very small PCs yes it could be considered as laptop replacement given wherever you plan to go there are screens and the input devices handy, I think they are very close to have enough charm in the performance to be viable 1080p gaming devices themselves when the soon I hope APUs allows for that.

I have a somewhat niche use case where a mini pc fits the bill perfectly. They can also make inexpensive, low power routers and servers for home labbers. I own 2 right now (one to run opnsense on, one for windows) and am pretty happy with my setup. Some mini's are starting to come with oculink which makes an external GPU fairly painless or you can use a second m.2 for an external GPU but that will generally take a bit of hackery to get working. Love these little boxes, it's almost a shame Intel sold off their Nuc unit and I actually wouldn't mind seeing slightly larger units with better cooling.

Built a tiny shoebox to replace my laptop for mobile music production. I did it after I built a full sized desktop to replace my at home laptop for the same reason. Both desktops destroy any laptops that’s on the market now and I can upgrade it. For example a major digital pcie card came out that’s my audio interface dream. I wouldn’t have been able to use it in a laptop. It’s still portable. I found a small 12 inch screen, foldable keyboard, etc. The only advantage the laptop had was to be able to use it without a power chord.

My main PC is a mini PC, I bought it for 554€... It has the Ryzen 7 7840HS 8C/16T 5.1GHz, 64GB of DDR5 RAM and 1TB SSD... My previous laptop costed me 1340€ with a i7-13620H and 64GB of RAM.

I think there is a solution to run the external dedicated GPU via m.2 nvme slot. It might be costly and purely depends on the requirement.

The MX Keys keyboard you recommended is great if you don’t want to use it with the backlight. If you want a backlight, seek something else. The MX Keys have faulty proximity sensors built in, affecting the timing when the backlight comes on or off. It’s very distracting when you work with this keyboard for longer sessions or when you need to focus. After more than 2 years Logitech never addressed the issue and left customers who bought it with no solution other than completely switching it off using Options+ software.

I think this mini PC is nice, but it's not a replacement for a laptop whatsoever. It's more a replacement for a desktop, since you still need a monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

100%, but my argument was for people who buy a laptop even though they don't need the portability... :)

I use a wonderful portable monitor and keyboard, and travel with mini-PCs all of the time. I bring it into the office and connect up to Ethernet or WiFi and it performs very well.

I like mini pcs. They'll actually impress real human beings rather than a 4090 haha. But make sure it has the highest RDNA as there is suffering graphics. Also don't over buy a Monitor as even my RDNA 3 GTR only does 60 hz on 1440.
