Being a recent convert in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (otherwise known as the Mormon Church) isn't easy. Many people struggling with fitting in, feeling comfortable, and even question why they joined in the first place.
Well friends, we're here to chat about your conversion. Kwaku first mentions that it's likely especially difficult for people who have never been religious in their life and then join Mormonism since they're suddenly expected to attend regularly, participate in different function, contribute time and talents, etc. It's a big change from being non-religious to joining a religion with so many expectations.
But in the end, Kwaku and David talk about the importance of joining for the right reasons and then remembering why you joined in the first place. Don't think so much about the culture of the Church, the incorrect doctrines some people might say, etc. Think about the spirit you felt when you joined. Keep reading the Book of Mormon and saying your prayers. It'll work out.

I struggle a lot sometimes as a relatively new member (11 months) ESPECIALLY moving wards but as I get my endowments soon I’ve come to realize the church isn’t about the people and it’s about being there to learn about Jesus Christ and the atonement that he gave us

I've been a member all my life, but I think the comment about the social is right on. It goes for either new converts or lifelong members, the social and the cultural aspects of the Church really can drive a wedge between members and the gospel. I don't know how many times I have had to go back Alma 4:10 when the members of the church were "a stumbling block to those who did not belong to the church" (we could insert new members here) making the church "fail in its progress". Focusing on the gospel is the key, though it can be hard to get past the power dynamics in the social interactions at church.

Exactly!!! That is exactly how Jesus explained himself. It's not the missionary's who brought you to the church, it was god. Jesus is not god, but he described himself as god sometimes because he gives god all the glory. Because it's because of god that Jesus Christ did what he did. Not some confusing Trinity complex thing. Jesus Christ tried to explain this to us in John. And this is how I know the church of jesus christ to be true as well. They are seperate beings. But are united in the same goals.

I've been a life long member of the church, but I've had many friends who've converted, and I've seen all ends of the spectrum when it comes to levels of activity in the church, from a guy who got baptized because his favorite football player was in town, to a return missionary, currently at BYU, who came to Boy scouts as a catholic to our church building every week. (Talk about a setup for success.)

I worked very hard to pay for my mission and I just wanted to go out and help others and to let them know how much God loves them. I'm trying to figure out the basic jargon that Mormons use. I've been in a Pentecostal church for years, and when I listen to Mormons, sometimes it seems like a foreign vernacular. I hear a lot about atonement but don't really grasp the Mormon idea behind it, I don't hear much about salvation in the Mormon church... But a lot about sacrament, and the only sacraments I know that are practiced are communion and recognizing Passover, but Mormons seem to have a lot more than that. I feel like I need a Mormon dictionary. The way Mormons talk about their testimony suggests that is a different construct than how I understand it. I went to a Christian university and got a bible minor, but there still a lot of concepts, theologies, and verbiage that I have never heard in the Mormon world.
@xepherofdawnfall8003
@xepherofdawnfall8003 6 лет назад
That's true, looking into the church can be dizzying, especially if you try to look into our slang without assistance. But the atonement and salvation are the same. We are save through The Atonement Of Jesus Christ. I find it odd that many churches say "oh? You believe in Jesus? You're saved!" Without any reason as to how or why. Faith in Christ is always good, but knowing is different.

Candis I will go over anything you want. LDS gospel is not the Christians version first off. LDS believe God was once like us and progressed to be the almighty and yet there was a god before him and yes God is married with LDS version to Heavenly Mother figure. Jesus is brothers with satan in LDS and also a person separate from God meaning not one and the same! Our brother well all brothers lol. It was taught by Brigham that only way to one of the three heavens Celestial being the top is by being married to at least 4 wives.

@davidsnell2605
@davidsnell2605 6 лет назад
I think sometimes people join the Church thinking that because it's God's restored church (which it is), it's going to lead to a fairy tale sort of life. I think the Bible portrays a much more realistic picture of the "true church." Peter tried to kill a government employee (thankfully only cut his ear off), essentially disavowed Christ 3 times, Judas flat-out betrayed the son of God even though he was an apostle, etc. etc. etc. ... Even when Christ himself walked the earth and established His church, it was MESSY. People made mistakes and did some horribly offensive things. But while many people surely left the early church because of those mistakes, the reality is that those mistakes didn't change the fact that the gospel was true. The same is true today. Good for you for forgiving, though! It's a tough thing to do.

@davidsnell2605
@davidsnell2605 6 лет назад
yoyogogo, I think that'd be a great episode! Daniel, I don't think the purpose of wearing one pair of earrings and dressing modestly is about discouraging people from lusting after one another. Men and women are responsible for their own thoughts and actions no matter what people are dressed in around them. I think modesty principle just goes back to having/showing respect for our God-given bodies.
@yoyogogo9787
@yoyogogo9787 6 лет назад
thank you for your replies. I've just always wondered why the church has such an ultra-specific stance on piercings. What I mean by this is that we are advised by the Prophet not to intentionally mark our body in any way unless it is for medical reasons. If this is correct why has the prophet said it is ok for women to have their earlobes pierced but no other parts of their body? It just seems contradictory to be told not to mark your body but at the same time be told its okay for women to pierce their ears. Also, why can't guys pierce their ears, I really don't understand why there is so much instruction on piercings but not a lot of explanation behind why the church discourages piercing. (btw I'm LDS). So yeah I'm just curious to see your opinions on this, as well as 3 mormons if they decide to do a vid on it, which would be pretty amazing if they did! 😁
@davidsnell2605
@davidsnell2605 6 лет назад
I agree that Adam and Eve were ashamed to be naked. And I suppose the reason I get dressed in the morning is because it'd be awfully embarrassing (shame) to be walking around naked in modern culture, however when it comes to modesty specifically (not just nakedness), I agree with lds.org: "Prophets have always counseled us to dress modestly. This counsel is founded on the truth that the human body is God’s sacred creation. We must respect our bodies as a gift from God. Through our dress and appearance, we can show the Lord that we know how precious our bodies are." Of course, there are other reasons for dressing modestly, but I think this is the crux of it. I would hope that men/women don't choose to dress *modestly* because they're ashamed of their bodies. It should be the opposite, imo.

I am curious about the comment you made about the promise we make when we are baptized. Why do you say that we make a promise during baptism? I was taught that baptism is an outward reflection of what is happening inside because of the promises that Jesus made, not anything we do.
@davidsnell2605
@davidsnell2605 6 лет назад
Great question, Joshua. The baptismal covenant (or promise) is a two-way street. Baptism is indeed an outward reflection of an inward change, but there are also very real promises involved. Each Sunday during the sacrament we renew the covenants we made at baptism. That which we promise, and what God promises us in return, are listed in the sacrament prayers. Check 'em out in Moroni chapters 4 & 5: www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/moro/4 Does that answer your question? If not, let me know.
@joshuabenton3785
@joshuabenton3785 6 лет назад
That is very interesting. It is not too different from the baptism that was taught by the Apostles, but it loses its meaning. Baptism is a declaration, a statement saying we take on the life and death of Christ, and believe we will participate in his resurrection one day. It is an act and statement of faith. It all relies on Jesus. I will not be coy: The more I look into Mormonism, the more I am saddened. You paint Joseph Smith as a martyr for your faith, but he was jailed not because people simply discriminated against him and his followers. He tried to take control of a city, stop the press from releasing stories he did not like and declared martial law so that he could maintain control. Let alone this man had 40 wives. How do you reconcile this?
@davidsnell2605
@davidsnell2605 6 лет назад
Your statements about baptism are correct, it is a declaration and symbolic of our death and spiritual rebirth in Jesus Christ, as well as symbolic of our resurrection. I don't believe baptism as covenant takes away from that meaning. In fact I think it's implied in the declarational aspect of baptism. Declaring that I believe in Christ (through baptism) implies a promise to keep His commandments. Regarding Joseph Smith: I believe The Book of Mormon, the book he claimed to have translated through the gift and power of God, is true. I've read every word of it and prayed directly to God about it, and have felt the Holy Ghost answer those prayers. That confirmation, for me, is more powerful than the more controversial historical events you cite. Though, I totally understand why those things would be disappointing to some people, especially those who don't know the whole story or haven't sincerely read The Book of Mormon. Whether or not Joseph Smith is definitionally a martyr or not is of little importance to me. The decision to destroy the printing press you referenced was voted on by the City Council, but admittedly an order put into effect by the Mayor, Joseph Smith. Probably not the best decision, but again, not damnable by any means when compared to some of the decisions of ancient prophets (i.e. Peter tried to murder a government employee ... luckily he only got the ear). The topic of polygamy goes much deeper than the basic, "this guy had multiple wives, must be a sicko," argument, but I don't pretend to have a justification for it, just as I can't justify its place in ancient times among the prophets. I don't deny it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth as well. I'd suggest this website for more in-depth information on the topic: josephsmithspolygamy.org/ Anyway, I appreciate your frankness. I'm not trying to convert you to my belief system or anything like that, these are just my feelings about the issues. If interested I'd invite you to give The Book of Mormon an honest shot. Or don't. Up to you.

Oh my gosh, did you hear the prophet just give you guys your new name? So obvious. Three Disciples. Or, Three Disciples Formerly Known as Three Mormons. That rolls off the tongue, too.

There is only one thing I can say: You. Can. Do. This. Ingvlid, i have seen so much growth in your testimony by reading your comments ( as much as someone can learn in a non stalker way in a RU-vid channels comment section), and I can see you are willing and wanting to learn and accept the gospel. "All those who desire to serve God are called to the work." D&C 5 I believe.

1. Moses was a fictional character in a work of fiction. 2. No Jews were freed from Egypt, because no Jews were in Egypt. 3. The bible misrepresents how Egyptians treated their workers. So even if Jews were there at the time, they would have been treated with respect. And as a bonus, most of the events in Exodus, even if it had happened, can be explained scientifically *without* divine intervention.
@davidsnell2605

I like your bonus point. I think all divine intervention is based on science and principles we just don't understand yet. But if it's God that applies that science in certain places at certain times, I still think it counts as divine intervention.

Dude, I love your icon. Secondly it is true that almost everything that happened in the bible can be scientifically explained, save for a fireball or two. But who says God needs to use unexplainable spirit magic? If He uses His power in a way we can understand, well good on us. Doesn't mean He does not exist.
