I once sent a note to her written on a napkin at the now defunct Hamburger Hamlet on Sunset near Doheny and she invited me over to her table to hang out for a little while. She was a magnificent lady and funny as all hell. She had a disarmingly sober view of the industry. In-person, that voice was as infectious as it was on television and in film. She didn't have to give me the time of day but she did and then some. I was lucky to have met her.

I just deleted my comment about the Hedda Hopper anecdote, because I didn't realize Suzanne relates the story of this episode. I guess I'll add back the part that friends of the family, who would visit us in the 1960s, grew up next-door to Suzanne in New York and she was like a sister to the two brothers. They said she was very scatological, and smoked heavily.

Smoked for many years at the time when it seemed harmless at first. That was always a big mistake that claimed a lot of Hollywood legends like her, Dean Jones, Yul Brynner, and many others. "If I could change one thing about myself, it would be the smoking. I always wanted to do a commercial that says now that I'm gone my advice to you is don't smoke. Whatever you do don't ever smoke." - Yul Brynner final interview before passing away.

EL GRECO 777 Can you please explain your comment? On the surface it seems like an insipid and very stupid response to anti smoking comments. A.What is the single most preventable cause of death in the US? Tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of disease, disability, and death in the United States, yet more deaths are caused each year by tobacco use than by all deaths from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders combined. answersdrive.com/is-smoking-the-most-preventable-cause-of-death-19500461
