Suzuki V-Strom DL 1000 and Suzuki V-Strom DL 650 performance comparison.
Note that both of the V-Stroms present significant speedometer error so the actual speeds would in fact be lower than shown and the acceleration times would be a bit longer.
Still, it gives an adequate view on the real-life performance of the two, which has been a hot topic in the V-Strom owners society since Suzuki had launched the 650.
DL 1000 is equipped with K&N air filter and Two Brothers exhaust so it produces around 102 HP while the 650 - being stock - 67 HP.
Also, the head-to-head race and the accelerations have been performed in different places so the times are correct - the terrain was completely flat there.

I would take my 1000 over the 650 all day every day, having ridden both. Unless I was hitting trails, in which case, yeah, 650 for sure. What did you not like as much about the 1000? Mine feels light and nimble, is very smooth and comfortable and completely composed at 85mph (we have high speed limits) even with big bags and a windshield.

I had both a 2007 Strom 650 and a 2004 Strom 1000. We moved and space for vehicles was a challenge, forcing me to choose one so, sadly, I parted with my beloved 650 and kept the 1000. It's a beast, for sure, but the power difference was just too great to give up. BTW, every time I think I should upgrade my 14 year old beast, I try out new bikes and they just don't give me the same joy. Crazy, I know, and I've tried the Africa Twin, Super Duke, R 1200 GS, and the Tenere. No thanks - give me my old-school Strom every time! In fact, I think I'm going to give her a PCV and slip ons as a present for being such a nice gal all these years. ;-)

The DL 650 stands no chance up against the DL1000... 35 % more Torqe 30 % more horsepower.... It is way faster, if someone thinks differently they have not ridden dhe DL 1000.... But, the DL650 is one fast 650 that's for shure !

Yep agreed on both counts - The 650DL only claimed 64hp, but I reckon it is faster than the early GS700, which boasted 75hp and more torque than the Suzuki. The GS punched well up to about 135kph and then just gave up.

@VToldsMotoShow
@VToldsMotoShow 10 лет назад
Yes, I would choose the 1000. It just has more power, sounds better, has better seat (higher and softer - which I prefer). In the city, if you're not a fan of racing with Porsches and Ferraris, DL 650 will be ok. They often have ABS which may be an important factor. In terms of reliability, I believe they're equal. There are two well-known problems that often occur in DL 1000 (noisy clutch gasket - many people have it modified with solves the problem; and leaking part of the clutch where you have to replace the seal or the whole part. Unfortunately I don't know the english name of the part) and probably a few minor issues with DL 650 that can happen. Nothing serious in both cases so both are a safe choice.

@VToldsMotoShow
@VToldsMotoShow 6 лет назад
The 650 is definitely not for high speeds that you refer to. The 1000 can handle 160 easily and that's a comfortable speed for it. I wouldn't go much faster. It's a tall bike with a large face, you sit high and in an upright position - this is not meant for 200 km/h speeds. It won't go much faster anyway.

Something is wrong with the 650. My 650 was going up to 200 km/h on worn engine and then up to 210 km/h on a new healthy engine. But the acceleration here is the same as mine was.
@NLBUURMAN
@NLBUURMAN 4 года назад
Both are faster than my Guardian angel, I'm looking for something comfortable on the highway over my 1100 Virago. That's not made for driving long pieces on 130-140kph without a 6th gear. The 650 has power enough for me, but what is it like to drive at those speeds enginewise?
@VToldsMotoShow
@VToldsMotoShow 4 года назад
It definitely is easier for the DL 1000 to keep that speed and accelerate at those speeds. I haven't spent that much time with the 650 but the differences are noticeable of course. The 1000 has 50% more power that makes a difference. The question is whether you care about that difference or not. The 650 is a bit lighter and the engine is much smoother at lower speeds. That actually feels nicer in the 650 if you're just cruising. If you like more adrenaline, then there's no question and 1000 is the choice.

@actstuntcam
@actstuntcam 3 года назад
There is about 15kg total overall weight difference. The DL650 is a smaller motor and has a shorter stroke than the 1000. This means it carries its weight much lower. Ultimately it feels around 30kg lighter because of where it carries the weight. I had a 1000 and it was one of the best road bikes I ever owned. If you were going to go off-road, the 650 would be wayyyyyy better.

I've owned both: a '06 1000 and a 2012 650A. IMHO, the DL650A is superior in most respects: ABS, better economy, smoother, quieter engine, better overdrive gear, nicer styling, less expensive, and a bit lighter. The only advantage to the 1000: POWER! Specifically, 30+ HP advantage over the 650. That translates to more excitement when you twist the throttle. Something's gotta give.....

Speedo read 9% fast. The 650 is great on lanes, B roads and A Roads even two up. Solo I gave a 701 sm a run for its money on a fast twisty road, its a genuine 110 motorcycle. Only on the motorway two up you miss some grunt, it feels like it needs another gear but then it probably wouldnt pull it. I normally cruise at 6-6.5k in top about 75-80. If your prepared to hold it around 7k rpm it will hold 85 with some left for overtaking but Its probably not so frugal then. Ive never ridden the 1000 but I imagine it must feel like my 1100 Guzzi, not really faster but more grunt.?? That said its alot lighter and Im gonna fit some 50/50s and take it on some easy offroad tracks. If it had 10 more bhp it would be perfect as is its 8/10

There is a difference but I believe real world experience for the average vstrom buyer is not so much better on vstrom 1000. Power is not everything. Sv650 owner after years on a bandit 1200. No doubt bandit was faster on straight line but sv650 is so much better on my daily commute and twisties. Also, doing motorways at 130kmh is effortless. It doesn't have the b1200 ability to do 120-160kmh in a blink but it is not necessarily a bad thing since those are illegal speeds and can avoid tickets.
@VToldsMotoShow
@VToldsMotoShow 3 года назад
Yeah, between the V-Stroms there's an easier comparison as they both have V2 engines with similar characteristics. I imagine the Bandit having weaker low end due to its inline engine comparing to a V2, so this kid of makes the SV650 (or a V-Strom 650) score in some areas like city riding.

the 1000 has been modified though, so bit unrealistic.... try it standard. it 'll be closer run.

There's just a slip-on exhaust on the 1000. 3-4 HP more than standard so not really anything noticeable I'd say.

Closer by about 6 feet. A slip on makes very little difference. A slip on and fuel tuner makes MAYBE 5 or 6hp tops. That isn't even close to the difference between those 2.

+Chris Bagley Yes, there's really no comparison. It may not look like that in the video but you sure feel that really well.

Chris Bagley Good choice because it's a very reliable bike.

Yes, I have an 06 DL 1000. It really has good power but it is also heavy. I take it on dirt roads and gravel. Not really an off road bike.
