If the starter switch isn't engaging your starter to turn over the engine, you have checked your battery to make sure it is good, and if you may have a headlight issue, hope this helps
My bike just had the same issue. I fixed it without having to buy anything. If you pause the video at 1:53, you see the starter button removed from the bike. The problem is there is a spring (hidden) underneath the metal contact piece. To be clear, the spring you see in the video at the 1:53 mark is not the spring that is the problem. The spring underneath the metal contacts pushes the metal contacts up to make contact with the contact pads on the bike. Over time the spring and or plastic pieces sliding on each other get dust/dirt build up and can start sticking in the down position or not sliding as well as it does when it is clean, which causes it to not make contact with the copper pads to complete the circuit. I repeatedly sprayed it completely in WD40 and repeatedly pushed on the contact piece a number of times until it would repeatedly return to its raised position. Hope this helps.
I know this is a older post. But have to say thank you for making this post. My bike was doing the exact same thing. I also found out just cleaning these contacts is just a bandaid fix. But it did get me back riding and ordered new off Ebay for $24.... Thanks Bro..
thanks for the quick reply! i managed to get the housing around the ignition button off last night, but i had to unatatch the throttle cables. Hope to get this thing fixed asap.
Was going to do a light errand few miles away. Not only has my gixxer suffered from "no start" in situations, but also dies while im riding. Did this today. I thought it was my battery, got home. Plugged in my battery charger, charged for about 1 hrs until full. Same issue, she will start, but no with confidence to start EVERY time. I especially don't want it dying while im on the freeway. So, i gotta do some more research. I also tested the relay with MM and got a 10ohm feedback on the main power sources to relay. Relay is good, i also replaced the relay about a yr ago, battery is also new, so is the ignition. Infact i had to cut off my old ignition (lost key). Put new ignition on, wired it in since the new one didn't have complete wiring harness. It was missing the ground. So i dismantled the old ignition, took the harnesss and put it on the new ignition, viola, she started. Now, i gotta figure out this "no start/die" situation. Your videos helpful, i think i'll do that next, since there's not much more i can do. Most all other components besides my rectifier is all new. New battery, relay, ignition..ect. I enjoy the problem solving, just not the times when you need to get somewhere and you vehicle isn't functional. Thank for the video bro, keep it up. Hope your bike stays strong for you! Thanks for the analysis.
Hello there Sthephen. Did you ever fix the problem? I'm having the same issue right now. Please let me know what you did and if you solved the problem. I lost the little round metal ball that is on top of the spring.
Getting mine replaced right now. I wish I had the space and tools so I could just do this myself. But instead I gotta pay my mechanic to do it for me. At least now I know what I gotta do.
that sucks. I'm sorry. My shop i "used to use", had my bike for like 4 months. I don't even recall anymore what the issue was. It was electrical as far as i remember. Went from no headlight, to dead battery in 4min. Insanely fast. I've replaced most of the bikes electrical on my own. Didn't want to pay out my arse for simple shit.
this helps big time. pretty much the exact same problem. only one time my right rear blinker wasn't working too. figured out that if I actually push the button kinda towards the ground when I push it in, it hits the contacts and starts... thanks for showing the that, helps me out for sure...
Evan Carlson your right rear blinker didn't work? I have an 06 gsxr and I'm having a similar problem. The bike doesn't start and all the lights work except for the rear right blinker. So is the ignition switch the problem?
Jonathan Realyvasquez my blinkers worked fine when this was an issue for me. It might be a fuse or something with the wiring. Check blinker switch contacts?
Thanks for the video, My bike went through a lot, stolen, wrecked then recovered, so when I put it back together after spending good money on it it didn't start, but I was able to run it power start.. the old fashion way!! I gave up on it and took it to the dealer, they told me it's the starter switch (button) but they are asking a lot for simple replacement and they want to replace the whole switch housing, now my question is can I replace the button itself?
adigamzm I had the same issue. Unless you find a similar year bike at a scrap yard or part out, u could prob find one cheaper. But you can't just buy the button from the dealer. You buy the whole housing for a Benjamin
Hey I’m having this problem but my headlight does turn off when i click on it and comes back off when I let go of the switch so you think it might be the same problem?
Must try this. all Im getting on my K2 1000 is a click. I changed the solenoid and still the same. The headlight is dimmer than it usually is . Hmmmm. I presume the contact part you showed just slips out of the switch ?
I'm having a similar issue. Sometimes my bike wouldn't start right when I pressed the starter button. I would have to shake / tap on the handlebars.. After 2 months of doing this it just quit all together. I think it's a bad starter switch. How did you remove it?? I don't see a screw holding it together? THANKS FOR THE HELP!
Joel Almeida there are two screws holding the plastic starter switch housing together (they clamp around the handlebar).. Once you open the housing, another two (very small screws) hold the internal switch to the housing... Once you have the switch separate from the housing, up must pry the switch open to reveal those contacts
Thanks for that tip!! I got that far and didn't get the bike started... So, I followed the speedo cable/ stator cable and "wiggled" them. Bike starts every time now. Must have been a loose connection. THANK GOD I didn't have the bike towed to a shop!! I saved so much $$$. Thank Adam Silva
i am facing a similar problem.. when i turn my engine off with the ignition key and turn it on and start the engine.. i goes well.. but when i turn it off with the kill switch and turn the kill switch back to on and hit the starter button a click sound happens and all the electronics system goes off.. like the dispaly, headlight, horn etc... please help me out with this problem
cool, I'm trying to figure out why my k6 1000 which cranks and runs fine has speedo tach and headlight issues. the neutral light lights up but everything else is gone. I have checked fuses, bulbs and wires, but not rectifier. I'm interested in the starter switch because when I press it while the bike is running, the tach and speedo will come on but I can't just hold it in that position. also when I press it while the bike is running the top headlight tries to light up but its dim as hell.
Wow mine doin the exact same thing. Head light goes out, bike wont start. The only difference is my speedometer not working either. Do u think that will fix that too
Same scenario happened to me a couple weeks ago, I swear this guy jinxed me lol I just finished filling up as this guy tells me I have a nice bike. Then I turn the key on and no start.🤔 it's a k6 750 it's weird it makes the same sound when you hit the start button as it does when your first turn your key on, like the fuel pump noise? So confused!
Adam Silva thanks Adam. Well turns out that it must be something else cause i tried it and theres just no contact on the sarter, there is in the headlight one but not the starter... I have to think something else. Any suggestions?
@@SuperbikeDiscovery if you're sure you've removed the whole housing encompassing the ignition button and taking all those little screws out that require you to expose the contacts shown here, then it could be another issue you are having somewhere else. Note that my bike was a 2005. Other years may vary on the ignition parts used
Adam Silva yea man i did the whole thing. Head light will go off when its not touching it but when i touch the one above (that starts the bike) nothing. It just doesnt make any noise or anything. I had to put some metals is the starter relay(under the seat) in the negative and positive and was able to turn on the bike. But yea... Starter switch wont work. Maybe i need to replace the starter relay?
screws hold the plastic switch housing to the handle bar...undo the two screws and the housing should split open exposing the interanl switch...a few more small screws to expose the contact points
@@adamsilva280 I hope this is all my problem is people said they think it is like the whole assembly I hope it is just this one part thoughthanks so much for posting I think you have the only video talking about this you should have way more subs
Thanks for the info. I have a hayabusa that would start but wouldn't allow the headlight to come on. The starter button would stick after being pressed. The bike would start but the headlights would stay off since the button wouldn't return back to the original position.
