I own a 2012 v strom. Most right ups don’t do it justice. 60 mpg average. I’m 50 50. Street dirt . 100 percent stock . I’ve owned 18 motorcycles in my life . Many different brands . I’m 58 and I see me riding my v strom when I’m 90 .. just a wonderful all round ride .

Been on v stroms for 16 years now. Two in the shed. Got a 2014 dl1000 with 92,000km on it. I love how the GS riders look down their nose at it. And KTM owners think the same. Well, I live on a dirt road inbetween a national park and national highway one. Perfect adventure bike territory. If you think you need a 184hp multistrada to ride on the back tracks, you probably pay more attention to what other people think about your bike, than what you actually need. The reality is, over 100hp and 100nm, is way more than you'll ever need in most situations to kill yourself or lose your license. I love mine. Not because I can't afford the "snob" brands, but because it's all the bike I'll ever need. Fuel economy is directly related to the throttle input. Sometimes mine isn't so great when I am feeling frisky. In Australia the distances are huge, and it's easy to "crib" a bit on the open road, and range suffers as a result. Not a complaint or a deal breaker. The biggest selling point for me is the bombproof reliability and ease of maintenance. Huge range of aftermarket farkles to suit every taste. I don't mind that everyone thinks Ewan Magregor and Charlie Boorman are expert adventure riders, (when they are actually BMW employees) and they copy them into a GS. I hardly ever see any of them on my road, coz it's actually dirt haha. Happy trails

Most of the Moto mags have given it lukewarm reviews. Comparing it to the BMW GS series and finding it lacking. Not mentioning the fact that you can buy a Suzuki 1050, load it up with all of the bells and whistles you really need and still have money in your pocket, as compared to a GS.

I’ve got one. F&*king great bike. Here in Australia the difference was $16k. I’ve put $1K of accessories, and will get the Suzuki Voyager luggage pack, $3K. I’m not even looking at a GS anymore… lol. Suzukis superpowers are a) build quality b) value and c) best gearboxes in the world. Had a Tenere, and the gearbox was pants.

So, the main reason why is because it is down on power compared to other bikes of its same cc in the sector. Want a fast V twin, super adventure 1290 or GT. Beside it being the least powerful 1000cc plus ADV, its perfect. We live in a world where 100 Horsepwoer is considered middleweight. Thus, ego takes over. I think comparing it to a tiger 900 and tenure 700 properly reveals its value. It's the top tier "middle weight" adv. I'd rather ride a 1290 though. Going from a ZX 14, it's hard moving to a much slower motorcycle.

Sold my 2018 vstrom about a year ago and now regret it, because only now I realise how good it really was. I’ve since had a KTM 790 adventure, a 1050 adventure, and I’m now driving a BMW 1200 GS. Although I like the other bikes, my plan is to go back to a V Strom for my long-term Bike because they are super for touring bulletproof handle great and our super comfortable. The engine is super smooth, which is one of the things I like best in a bike.

I love my 2020 1050XT. It's built well, has great performance and I never worry about it breaking down, because it's a Suzuki with a motor they've perfected over two decades. Only thing I changed was the muffler to give it more of a bark, and a taller Puig windscreen because if you're a little taller like me, the stock windscreen beats your head pretty badly at highway speed.

I did order the regular 1050 for 2023 and it should come in few weeks. With quickshifter and TFT I see it as a pretty perfect bike since I love Suzuki Vtwin. My last one was 2018 1000 XT. Last year it was the new KTM 1290 SAS for 6 months before it got stolen. I dont mind less power with Suzuki, the engine has great sound character with Akrapovic.

The Stroms are great bikes, Vee and Wee. Personally the 650 suits me better, it has enough power for me riding solo and i prefer its lighter weight and better mpg. But if i rode two up the 1050 would probably interest me more.

So, I embarked on phase two of my midlife crisis in September last year. Wanted a bike but was unsure about gears, so putting the horse before the cart I bought a Honda Forza 350 and booked my direct access. I was not interested in mega speed and it seemed to fit the bill. My instructor made me have a good look at myself 😁 and I did it on an SV650 and somehow passed with no faults (oh yea of little faith). I must say the Forza is great fun and to my great surprise my wife wanted to get on the back for rides out. This prompted a search around weight bearing capacity, luggage options etc etc. With that info in hand, and with some trepidation I purchased a 2nd hand 2021 1050XT - a month after passing my test. Only 2.5k miles on it and extras including bash plate, GIVI panniers, spots, heated grips, radiator grill and engine guards etc. A leap I know and a steep learning curve, however I have to say I am extremely happy with the decision. Using the rider modes has allowed me to get used to its power in a phased way, the cruise control is awesome, gear changes are smooth. The Hill hold function has helped me whilst getting used to clutch control and the pillion space is comfortable and generous. I've added a Shad box with back rest for the wife to feel more secure. It's made no difference to the handling. As my confidence and skill grows the bike has more to offer and I find myself wanting to ride it everyday. Yes it's heavy and the weight is up top - I've dropped it once whilst stationary (adverse camber) but we picked ourselves up, put our backs in to it and lifted it up and carried on. A minor scrape on the engine guard and that was it. I know there could be a million comments on here about A) buying such a big capacity bike with my level of experience/riding etc and B) The fact I have nothing really to compare it to - but as a new (and mature) rider I love it. It's not a hooligan but it's more than quick enough for any safe and legal ride. It shuttles me and the Mrs around with no trouble whatsoever and is very comfortable. Yes I love the look of BMW Gs's but I don't love the price and servicing - yes I can afford it but there are other things I want to spend my money on, particularly maybe a different sort of bike like a Bonneville or similar. The Vstrom is a good workhorse, it handles well enough for me and I have never felt scared on it - ok, a bit apprehensive when I first rode it but within a few miles I was totally at home. Maybe affordable, reliable and just good at keeping going (whilst keeping you safe with the IMU etc) might not be sexy or ultra marketable but it works for me and at just over £8k a year old with low mileage is very good value for money. My pal has just bought a Harley Davidson Pan America and funnily enough we get to the same places at the same time........

Congratulations you made wisest decision of your motorcycle riding career. I used to own 2018 VStrom 1000XT w/5axis IMU and now 2022 Versys 1000 SE w/6axis IMU that most certainly saved my wife and I from serious injury or death due to stupid, elderly motorist. Riding any lower priced budget motorcycle is far more hazardous than one with IMU. The liter plus bikes have much higher quality brakes and suspension that work better in emergency situation. Riding a motorcycle without 6 axis IMU is analogous to driving car without seat belt, air bags, or anti-lock brakes. The purists or those with thin wallets and less to live for may say otherwise because they are convinced they have superhuman sensory skills. As a well-seasoned rider getting up in age I know much better and survived a potential tragedy to talk about it.
@balladofbalfe8914
@balladofbalfe8914 Месяц назад
@@kannermwNot convinced you need all the tech. ABS of course. I use traction control but tbh I hardly ever see either engaging. I'm not an aggressive rider (know your limits), but I wonder if all the tech is making people sloppier riders?, if someone's tech is blipping at them most rides then maybe they're not doing it right.🤷‍♂️
@balladofbalfe8914
@balladofbalfe8914 Месяц назад
I have the cash in the bank but I couldn't justify a GS because A) it's a waste of money/bad value and B) it is sooo cliché. Who wants to be yet another 'cookie cutter' I had to have the ultimate machine because...... I'm the alpha male, but I don't take it off road because I'm not interested in that but I absolutely could take it the ends of the earth.....🤔 You sure about that?
@kannermw
@kannermw Месяц назад
@@balladofbalfe8914 Your argument lacks credibility. There will ALWAYS be riders and drivers with average and below average skills. Cars have traction and stability control and it makes them safer for average or poorer drivers. More skilled drivers or riders still benefit in unexpected conditions. A high percentage of motorcycle accidents are inexperienced riders and experienced riders who make mistakes. Who wouldn't want that extra measure of safety vs. potenial death, serious injury, or disability? It seems foolish to suggest that be your punishment for making a mistake. The intrusion this new tech provides in normal riding is negligible. I've hit a patch of unseen sand or oil when attempting to accelerate out of roundabouts and felt a momentary interuption of power as a friendly reminder. On an older bike without such tech I had one of those oh shit moments on wet striping while turning left at an intersection. I reacted properly but thought of what could've happened had I not? Living to ride another day is way better than the alternatives.
@kannermw
@kannermw Месяц назад
@@balladofbalfe8914 I would purchase GS tomorrow because they are the best if it werent for BMW's history of poorer reliabilty and high cost of repairs. Essentially 10-15% better performance to me is not enough incentive to offset more unpredictable higher cost of ownership of at least 20% and the greater likelihood of unexpected failure in the middle of nowhere.

I love my 2022 1050XT and deliberately bought this model instead of the 2023 DE. My previous bike had a TFT and it was a pain to use with setting very deep in the menus. Also, the 2023 has a tubed front and tubeless rear which was not what I wanted. I reckon the 2020 - 2022 model is the sweetspot for this bike.

I also thought that the DE was really weird with different type of tyres front and back. I was looking at upgrading to a 2020 1050 xt from my 650, but got warned that the clutch basket has issues, so I didn't switch. Think it's a bit sad Suzuki hasn't fixed this in 20 years, really has me looking at other options when it's time to upgrade. Wonder if they did anything with the issue in the DE model.

Also, Suzuki needs to teach Yamaha how to build a first rate gearbox. I test rode a Multistrada V2S, and I’m glad I didn’t spend the extra. Suzuki needs to teach Ducati how to build a smooth tractable engine, and gearbox lol.

Nice vid & all good points but the problem is that the Suzuki isn't very cool or desirable. It's for those on a budget & that's just not sexy. Suzuki give you what you need but not always want you want & there are often compromises. Nonetheless they make great bikes & are still my favourite manufacturer as I think they're generally the best value for money, especially secondhand.

TBH, while I like the styling of this type of bikes, I find them all kinda ugly. I'd put the KTM SA1290 and...mine which the exact same one as in this video as my favs in this category. The GS or Multistrada are not even close (lookwise) and the Triumph is just meh..

Basing your primary buying decisions on coolness/looks is a path to disappointment or disillusionment. Performance , comfort, reliabilty, value, and cost of ownership should be primary goals. Lots of former Euro bike riders who have learned the hard way having part of their wallet stolen.

I put 30K miles on the XT: If you take the time to setup the suspension you can surprise quite a few sports bikes. I now have 1290S and the electronic suspension is only on par with the manual v-strom suspension. In summary: I never had the XT wallow, wobble or bounce out of shape, even cranked over and hitting a Welsh pothole- damn fine tourer.

It's taken them 20 years to finally offer looks handling reliability and decent spec. But it was never a bad bike. Just ugly. It looks much better than a gs and it will last longer

I think it's because the original V Twin was such a great engine and made such a great bike that people were like " if it isn't broken don't fix it " , all they had to do was build a bigger V Twin . You can't call the bike a " V-Strom " if it hasn't got a V Twin Engine ....................

How would you get to the screen adjuster lock on the inside?? It'd be too dangerous and you'd end up knocking your phone off or worse.You only need to adjust it once for you and leave it alone..no big deal and really not worth mentioning, honestly the things that folk complain about these days is quite staggering. as for TFT screens...??
@Englishbikerdan
@Englishbikerdan Год назад
Many other manufacturers manage it with no problems. It's good to be able to adjust on the go, as wind buffeting can differ at different speeds. You are complaining about complaining, which is amusing. 😂
@stephenauty2402
@stephenauty2402 Год назад
So you're going to be constantly changing the height of the screen as you accelerate and decelerate? That means removing your phone from it's holder , removing the phone holder , all with your left hand wearing a glove most likely , adjusting your screen so you don't get buffeting and then reach into your pocket with gloved hand on to remove the phone holder , drop your phone on the road and watch it smash into pieces...etc etc... or you have the lock infront and you'll be moaning that there's nowhere to put your phone.
@Englishbikerdan
