One of the toughest centers and best rebounders of the 70s - Swen Nater. The 1973-74 ABA Rookie of the Year, has had a season in the ABA averaging 15.1 points and 16.4 rebounds (lead the league), best NBA season could be 15.5pts/13.2 rebs or 13.4pts/15rebs (lead the league). Probably best known for his bench player role with the 1983/84 Lakers, otherwise Swen hasn't played for particularly good professional teams. Despite this, people around the leagues knew that the big Dutchman could play and bang people around - I've read that he once got in a scramble with Marvin Barnes under the basket and simply flung Marvin to the end of the court as if he were a doll. Was a back-up center for Bill Walton in UCLA and since his life had been a tough one (got orphaned in Netherlands, cut during tryouts for his high school basketball team) he never pouted and never got outworked, even by Bill Walton. He still holds the NBA record for most defensive rebounds in a half - 18. April 9, 1978.

Swen had a sweet hook shot. A lost art.

Big guy, very strong and tough as nails. Seemed skilled on the low-block too, with a decent jumper, could score up to 15 per game and was one of the best rebounders in the league. Not known for defense but I heard it wasn't bad either. Thanks for the upload.

Nater was a great Rebounder. He played Jabbar tough as well. Put him in a time machine and he might be the best center in the NBA in 2017

The late 80’s and 90’s would have been his decade.

Has nice touch. Very strong rebounder. Strange to see Dave Bing leading the Celts, and Hondo's retiring. Tough season for both franchises.

This was the very last game for John Havlicek, Dave Bing, Ernie DiGregorio, Bird Averitt, and the Buffalo Braves

What happens when you play behind Walton. Like Manning or Brady's backup.

I could be wrong but The UCLA teams back then had Nater serve as Waltons backup

This was 77-78 season. Cedric Maxwell's rookie season and Hondo's last season. I hope Havlicek extended his career till the 80s and won more chips with Bird, McHale and Parish.

2:30 Lamar! You saw this coming: I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American. A stiff, who didn't have cable TV until I was 18. Therefore, limited on what I watched NBA wise, outside of the Sonics and nationally televised games. I did NOT know, that Sven Nectar could dunk!!

Swen Nater's biggest problem, he was too unselfish!

Yep. Very unselfish and underutilized. Rarely took more than 15 shots in a game.

Wow...checked the ticker during this broadcast. Eddy Curry (43/13) played easily the best game of his career the night this was aired. Do you have that one?

I played one on one with Swen a few times (I never won). Nicest guy Ever! With a physique like a 6'11" white Lebron James. gotta Echo that Injurys put a huge damper on his career. Didn't he star in the Olympics one year?

Lack of good centers now, Nater would have done well in the current NBA

Sorry Rik (Smits), but Swen's still the best Dutch big man of all-time!!!
@Amick44

Yes he is. Swen rebounded for one. Smits scored (some) and blocked shots. He (Rik) rebounded like he was 6'6
