North Carolina State Senior Owen Lloyd posted the fastest time in the Men's 1650-yard Freestyle, earning him the ACC Title, an automatic entry to the National Championships, and a new best time. Moments later, an announcement was made that Lloyd had been disqualified for "interference with another swimmer."
The rule(s) at play from the NCAA rulebook:
- Rule 2, Section 5, Article 1a: "Any competitor who interferes with another swimmer during a race shall be disqualified from that race, subject to the discretion of the referee..."
- Rule 2, Section 5, Article 1b: "A swimmer who changes lanes during a heat shall be disqualified."

It was the right thing to do : when he lets himself fall in the other lane, he makes waves that can affect the chrono of others swimmers. Imagine the first F1 pilot who finishes the race starts to make a burnout and makes smoke al overt the finish line. That's the same thing, and that was the right decison to disqualify him.

We were instructed not to talk, and I had forgotten that and commented to my neighbor “that wasn’t so bad.” The teacher gave us both 0s. I had to plead with the teacher to at least excuse my neighbor as it wasn’t her fault that I had leaned over to make the comment. It worked, but I still got the 0.

Answering the comment: yes, if you are doing an important test and not only you're not allowed to talk after finishing the test (not at least until everybody else has finished aswell, or the time limit has runed out) but it's explicitly in the rules that you will be disqualified as punishment if that happens, in that case if you break the rules the only one you can blame is yourself.

@@mrdoodlesvlogs Firstly, this rule wasn't made by me but by actual experienced swimmers and experts. Compare this to a field running event. In swimming, there's no finish line that you cross and come out. When a swimmer finishes, he's still in the 'field'. So crossing over into another lane (doesn't matter if the swimmer of that lane has finished or not) is like a person finishing a 100m running race and then moving into other athlete's lane within crossing line. That would certainly distract other athletes. In sports, a single second of distraction could be the difference between win and loss. Hence this rule. If a professional swimmer didn't know the rule beforehand, may be he needs to relearn the sport.
