Hi Guys
Today I'm looking at my #Swiss Volcano Stove these are widely available online or in many #army #surplus stores for around £15
The kit comprises a cup that locks to the stove with a water bottle nested inside
I've added additional air vents and enlarged the feeding opening slightly on the stove and with the addition of a sink drainer this let's much more air in so it burns hotter and faster
This cup is fine for boiling water but to speed it up I've made a lid by cutting the top of of a can and fixing a bolt as a handle
It's a great kit for hiking or camping for practicing bushcraft as you don't need to carry or buy fuel just use twigs, leaves and pine cones etc
Thanks for watching I look forward to seeing your comments and hopefully you'll consider subscribing
Take care
Roo

That makes sense for a kit designed for the Swiss Alps thanks for that 👍 Not usually a factor for me in the middle of England though! Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment really appreciate it buddy Take care Roo

Thanks for the video. Worth noting that the old style 'SIGG' shaped bottles (intended to carry fuel) had no inner lining and so would be fine for boiling. The newer consumer SIGG (or SIGG style) drinking bottles may have a thin plastic/rubber coating which would get damaged through boiling. Greetings from Switzerland.

Nice with some interesting and useful mods 👍. Strictly speaking, the stove is not designed to be top-loaded and stacked up with twigs in order to create a bed or coals. Depending on the type used, wood can burn pretty hot .. especially the hardwoods .. enough to possibly damage the aluminium body. Twigs loaded in at the bottom keep the Fire relatively 'cool'. Yes, more effort but that's how it is. It works very well with Alcohol Gel Fuel or even Esbit Tabs. Attaching the Cork to the Bottle Neck with a length of Sink Plug Chain will ensure that the Cork does not go 'walkabout'. Take care ..

I've never had any of the M71 gel stoves the Swiss also issued that I think might fit in these like a trangia alcohol stove would. Great little kit for hot drinks or a mug of noodles on a cold day, thanks for watching and taking the time to leave your well reasoned comment much appreciated 👍 All the best Roo

@@PreparedCamping 👍 .. I buy the Gel ('Sicherheitbrennpaste' / Safety Burn Paste) at my local Supermarket in 850 g plastic bottles and decant it into smaller ones for use outdoors. Stove .. any suitably-sized metal container will do. Cut the bottom off an Aluminium Air Freshener Can .. whatever.

Yep, I was also gonna comment on the nice mods and warn against firing it up to hot... What was it again? About 660 degrees Celsius would make it collaps into a puddle of goo, depending on the grade of aluminium... And a lot of Sigg like bottles are made of copper, that has the added benefit of being antibacterial and help with having safer water and storage..

@@PreparedCamping I have had one of these kits for years with the intention of putting together a traditional bush kit like from my youth but I had previously purchased the Russian VDV canteen kit and like it so much I haven't ever gotten around to actually using the Swiss kit.

@@turtlewolfpack6061 I collect militaria and the VDV kit is on my wishlist VDV is better for cooking with than this swiss set I imagine but this kit is excellent for a quick hot drink

@@PreparedCamping the VDV kit has been with me for a LOT of miles and many different adventures in the woods and I always find myself going back to it even as other bits of kit change. Another mess kit that I own and love is the Czech three piece one and I haven't packed it in a few years either. If someone were to make a modern VDV kit out of stainless for a good price I would likely buy a couple.

Had one for about 5 or 6 years. I got it and an LK35 from Military Mart, a tenner for the stove, the LK was £17 I think. Haven't modded the stove itself, as it works well. Not sure about drilling more holes in it as the top ones are going to let heat out before it gets to the top of the cup sides to vent, and more lower holes will make it more susceptible to wind. I did use a kitchen sink hole drain strainer the same as you, but the other way up. A bolt and wing nut through the centre with a cut off domed base from an aerosol hole through that so it was a stand for the strainer. I used that to hold solid fuel tablets (cut down fire lighter blocks from the CoOp). Worked well. I wanted an alcohol stove for it, my Trangia was too fierce, flames coming out of the top holes, so I made a smaller one out of the base of a beer can and a strip from the can to form the inner reservoir with a string wick surround, pin prick holes around the top (which was the base), then the base cut of a small can of vegetables slotted in as the base for the burner. The same design as the Trangia, fuel heats up, travels up the wick, vapourises and flames out of the pin holes. Works a treat, and what's more I cut the cork down and the stove's top hole slots upside down over it and the bottle neck, the cup fits over that for packed assembly, water, stove and burner, one unit. I don't have a problem with corks, they've been used as bottle stoppers for centuries. I take them out of wine bottles fairly regularly. Never had it leak. The other advantage of it is you can use it to speed up boil time of the bottle. Not too tight, otherwise it will launch itself at a great rate of knots when the pressure builds up. In with just enough to hold it there, and it makes a pop and sits there or falls out when the water boils. I have an 40 year old one litre Swiss SIGG screw top aluminium bottle which I used for rock climbing weekends, they may be the manufacturers of the stove, it fits it like it was made for it, so I could use it instead. The other thing that fits the cup like it was made for it is another 40 year old item, the lid off the smallest Trangia kettle. I modded that by drilling 3 small holes, for draining water off from pasta, just in from the edge and 1 directly opposite to let air in so the water can drain easily, again works a treat. 🙂
@PreparedCamping
@PreparedCamping 3 года назад
I've never used an alcohol stove with it although I have made those beer can ones that would fit I've always just used twigs. The Swiss M71 gel stove worked well with it apparently. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment hope you have a great day. All the best, Roo

It played!!! No idea what the problem was but after trying about 20 times (I'm waiting in my Swiss Army Volcano Stove delivery and have been watching review vids since placing the order). Good idea with the top. Looks like some kind of ikea fixing for the handle. I'll deffo do something similar. The sink drainer things good too. don't you just love it when you find a little bit of tat like that and find a use for it in your bush craft kit

@@rtronorba7309 indeed, the little handle is a 19mm hex head through bolt I had spare But in hindsight would probably look better with a little wooden knob screwed on I'm sure you'll be very happy once you get your set it's a nice lightweight kit Take care mate Roo

@@thomasmusso1147 if I had a tin foil hat I'd start thinking RU-vid doesn't like me but I'm an unknown minnow so it's more likely that it's just a glitch 😉 Sorry, hopefully it will resolve itself somehow but thanks for stopping by and trying I really appreciate it 👍 Take care Roo
