Back when I used to live in broken hill as a small child, I used to go to the train station every Tuesday (I think) and watch the indian pacific and other xplorers come to the station

I think it is the only loco shunting left at Central - a far cry from pre XPT, Explorer, etc. days. The IP carriages were built at ComEng at Clyde back in the early 70s(?) under license from the US - they have been extensively refurbished. It is a pity that it is now only a luxury train - I was also able to catch it overnight to Broken Hill in a seater carriage (it use to run 3 days a week to Perth back then) the seating carriages were very popular with backpackers, students & those who couldn't afford a sleeper berth. It is a very long train & a great way to experience the 'outback', just a shame that it is too expensive for most Australian to try.

Is it just me, or did they make that a LOT more difficult than it needed to be? So many forward/reverse movements that didn't seem to achieve anything in the early part of the video.
@aussiejohn5835
@aussiejohn5835 2 года назад
The first movement was to pull the carriages on platform 3 far enough back to allow the locomotive in front enough room to move onto the run around track. This section was then pushed back onto platform 3. The locomotive then shunted from platform 3 to collect the locomotive and move it into position to attach to the section on platform 1. The section on platform 1 was then shunted onto the section on platform 3 to form the entire consist.

It wouldn't hurt to wash the loco's, surely for the vast amount the grossly overpriced fares are, you can get a clean loco!
@phillipg1588
@phillipg1588 3 месяца назад
Back in the day when two 46 class electric loco's used to haul the Indian Pacific to Lithgow then swapping over to diesels beyond there, as a young engine cleaner it was our job to ensure those two 46 class loco's were cleaned and waxed prior to departure to Sydney Yard. It now seems that Pacific National are not fussed at all on the state of their loco's hauling Australia's number one passenger train. You would even think that at the very least they could place two NR class loco's and not the miss match of loco's as in this video.

Thanks for the great memory. In 1984 I went on the Alice from Sydney to Broken Hill, spent the day in Broken Hill and later that night got the Indian Pacific back to Sydney, actually on my birthday. I was on a Nurail Pass which gave a fortnight's First Class Travel anywhere in NSW. I paid the extra for Sleeping where relevant. Then, in 2000, married. my wife and I came back from Perth on the Indian Pacific to Sydney, with our car we had driven across the country, on back. Are they still taking cars on the train?
@aussiejohn5835

And how many people knew that the NR class has a shunting bell, just like US locos. You can hear it briefly near the start of the video. You can see it on NR110 just ahead of the trailing bogie.

I was at Central on Wednesday 6th April 2022 when this was filmed. Saw NR 26. It was on Platform 3, when I saw it, at about 2pm. Heaps of passengers where queued up to get on. From my observations it seems that there is an age limit for passengers on the Indian Pacific. If you are under 65yo they don't let you on 😀

At 7:00 did it reverse back into platform 3 to let the V-set to platform 2, or another reason? Seems weird that it started to pull out, then reversed

Don't they back it down that siding to the right of the refern end of platform one to pick up the car carrier, or did it not ferry any cars on this trip? I have been on it and walked the length of the train when it stopped in cook, from the locomotives to the car carrier and back to my carriage just as the train was getting ready to continue to Kalgoolie and then Perth.

this is departing. I want to know when it arrives how would the 2 locomotive in the front escape the end of platform and getting out end of the line?
@aussiejohn5835
@aussiejohn5835 2 года назад
The train is split into 2 sections between Redfern and Central. The front locomotive is detached and moved aside while the second locomotive takes the first half of the train into platform 3. The other locomotive is then attached to the remaining half of the train and takes it into platform 1. This locomotive stops the carriages short to allow it to run around the section and then attaches to the end of the section and pushes the carriages to the front of platform 1.
@Woodland26
@Woodland26 2 года назад
@@aussiejohn5835 is that tracks in between platform 1 & 2 that allows the locomotive detach, then back out from the other platform?
@aussiejohn5835
@aussiejohn5835 2 года назад
@@Woodland26 yes, that is correct and there is a similar track between most platforms but not all are used anymore because locomotive hauled passenger trains are non existent except for the IP and heritage trains. The end of this video as the train is leaving you will notice a short loop line where the locomotive for the return journey will sometimes wait and will attach to the train and do the shunting.

Platform 1 needs an extension so this is no longer necessary.
@raph6931
@raph6931 2 года назад
Theyre not going to extend Platform 1 halfway to Redfern just to service an extremely infrequent private train. There's only one platform in the entirety of Australia that is long enough for the whole train
@netking66
@netking66 2 года назад
@@raph6931 Perhaps they could stop it at Redfern with the rear carriages on the platform and the front half olny carries on to Central. Would give a new meaning to 'Getting off at Redfern'.
