Rodney is such a kind, gracious man. He just has a glow about him that’s obvious as he talks. Considering his story, I’m not surprised. Thank you Bobby, for sharing this great story and allowing us to meet this man and see this beautiful aircraft. I’ve fueled a lot of these years ago, but had no idea they had that performance ! Excellent video ! 🇺🇸

I've got about 15 hours of Navy training in the T-28. I lost my medical about 15 years ago due to a coronary bypass. My ECG was fine after, but all I got from the FAA was robot-produced letters asking for info I'd send them again each time. I'd sure like to make contact with someone at the FAA who cares at all. I never was able to get a real human being to respond. I have a commercial-instrument license, both helicopter & fixed wing, plus ground instructor and airline dispatch certs.

I hope you get it back soon so you can start flying again . Did you have any seizures the day you had the stroke ? This happened to my dad in the emergency room the day he had a stroke . Question for anyone who flies and wants to give a detailed answer. Are landings altitude and speed designed so if you lose power, you can make it to the airport?
@ToyManFlyer1100
@ToyManFlyer1100 5 лет назад
Umm..Noo.....Also depends on the plane.....If you lose that big "fan" up front, if it aint a glider, chances are, you need to unstrap it, bend over and kiss it.....At least you wont see the impact.....Even a Cessna 150 dont have that much of a "Glide path"..Best you can do is try to "land" uprite and not inverted...Thats why while you are flying, in addition to enjoying the fab scenery, you are constantly watching for an emergency landing spot .....
@sanfranciscobay
@sanfranciscobay 5 лет назад
@@ToyManFlyer1100 So you will not make it back on the Glide slope. What is your typical 1 to 2 mi out altitude and what would it have to be in order for you to make it? Why is that not considered in your Landing?
@ToyManFlyer1100
@ToyManFlyer1100 5 лет назад
@@sanfranciscobay ....The maximum L/D ratio (L/Dmax) of a Cessna 172 is about 9, so its glide ratio is about 9:1 - for every 9 units traveled forward it will lose 1 unit of altitude. So, it will glide about 9,000 feet for every 1,000 feet of altitude available.....This is for a Cessna 172....... Soo, I would estimate, based on this....I would be on final at say 1000 ft..Otherwise, you gonna have a "hard landing"........Also, since you dont have engine power...you have no forced air going over the wings, and you have to take into account your "head wind speed"....Once again, most GA planes have a "glide ratio" of poo poo.....They dont glide.....If that was so, why do ev'ry Cessna you see on the news is to' all the hell.....Its a trainer, shouldve been able to set it down in a pasture , no probs... As you well know, this is why you do "stall checks".....in the air...Soo you know what kinda speed and time you have if your "big fan" up front quits working..... I pretty sure some mathematical genious could come on here and give you a formula....But based on the students I see....Their finals in C-150's are at about 1000...and thats w/ full flaps....

Another great video Bobby! Here's a "think big" kinda thought... --> WHEN you get your medical back, you should get ahold of a Grumman Albatross and combine the experiences of Sailing and Flying Doodles by traveling the world "Jimmy Buffett Style" in a campered out Alby with a jet ski slung under the wing. You would have a bird's eye view of all the best anchorages and be able to reach really remote places in just a couple of hours. Including remote lakes in Canada or basically any place on earth that has water or a runway. You would be the first guy on RU-vid to have such a channel and I guarantee your viewership would be in the millions. I'm pretty sure Laura would be stoked on it as well. How fun would that be? I'll bet Jimmy Buffett will let you interview him about his Albatross experiences once he sees you are a fellow Alby owner (his was named Hemisphere Dancer - perhaps the best airplane name ever). Anyway, my lifelong dream is to travel the world by big seaplane, and since it is unlikely that I will actually get to do it, I figured talking you into doing it and filming it for the rest of us is the next best thing ;) Hopefully all of your other viewers will read this comment and click "like" if they agree with me on this. Looking forward to part 2 of this one. Peace and fair winds.... ~Matt

They actually burn 35 gal/hr, if you run 24”/1850 rpm, which is a good setting for local flying. It gives about 150 kts. Also, you are supposed to close the cowl flaps to 1/4” open before takeoff. I see his cowl flaps were almost wide open the entire flight. Unless it was a very warm day, I assume the cyl head temps were below the normal operating range. One last thing, they will not do 320kts, in level flight. 270 knots, wide open is more like it. Vne is 340 knots, however, with a ceiling of 39,000ft. Great video, thank you!

I’m a type 1 diabetic in relatively good health. I’m afraid to go for my class 3 medical because the requirements to get a special issuance is very invasive and they may still deny. Once denied for a medical you can’t use your drivers license to fly sport pilot. Only problem is, I want to fly at night and IFR and I want to fly bigger planes and carry more than 1 passenger. -- :(

Jeremiah Hughes I known and have known to many diabetics including my self that have had their blood sugars drop dangerously low with out indication. I had a situation one day where I was helped by a stranger who recognized I was having (because of his brother was a diabetic) severe low. I was saved by his actions to get sugar in to me, the last thing I remember was sitting on a bench before I came around in back of a store him getting me to finish a coke. I guess since the pump is bing used it has greatly reduced the chance of bottoming out. Best wishes, stay healthy and I hope you get your wings someday.
