T M Krishna in Concert

Thodur Madabusi Krishna’s three-initialled renown as ‘TMK’ comes from his widely acknowledged stature as a vocalist in the Carnatic tradition. His musicality eludes standard analyses. Uncommon in his rendition of music and original in his interpretation of it, Krishna is at once strong and subtle, manifestly traditional and stunningly innovative.
T M Krishna regaled the audience at the Biennale Pavilion with his evocative rendition of the ragas and his own genre-defying, multi-dimensional compositions such as the Poramboke Padal supported by Vittal Ramamoorthy on Violin, N Guruprasad on Ghatam and B S Purushotham on Kanjira

Looking at the way he sings, it seems that there's some great search going on inside him... his search will be fulfilled only when he start believing God..because God is the ultimate result of naadopasana and without realising if he keeps searching he has to keep looking forever... A greatest musician of our time.. esp. his rendition in brindavan saranga is out of the world

TMK is an outstanding artiste in technical as well in aesthetic aspects. He is taking music to another dimension beyond the boundaries without any doubt. I have been viewing comments with double standards from same people since 2000 on TMK. People blamed him for being too sampradaya till 2011 & the same people blame him now for going out of the box, when he started showing his Innovativeness. From technical point of view, No one is 100% accurate in performing & currently there are bunch of experienced reputed performers inthe field rendering with 80% unrecognizable & inaudible sahityas. One error of inaudible sahitya in the stage performance is technically negligible because we cant comment on the artiste without knowing the complete set up of sound system. Smt.Sudha Ragunathan sated once that...performer renders whats expected in regular manner is called artiste & who renders an unexpected miracle is called Maestro. TMK is undoubtedly the second variety.

How can I ever comment on such a rendition of Brindaavana Saaranga ? Such peacefulness, such calmness, such flow... Just out of the domain of words. The only question that remains in my mind is, How do you sing like that T M Krishna? How do you sing like that?
@yeshprab
@yeshprab 7 лет назад
Hi Aditya Jois, The same question arose in my mind several times as I listened to his singing: How does he sing like that? The only way one can sing like that is when the singing comes from the heart, not just from the throat. And when one forgets the audience and stops trying to elicit applause and, instead, sings immersed in raaga bhaava, and sings with sowkhya bhaava. Singing pleasantly with sowkhya bhaava is very important, otherwise why bother to sing at all? I think TMK knows this, that's why he sings like that. The way he sings can not be taught by a teacher. Just as a spider weaves its web using matter within its own body, TMK sings using the divinity in his heart. Heart is the place where the anaahatha chakra is. Every one has divinity in his heart; one must find it, and feel it, and only learn to access it, with relentless sadhana. Yesh Prabhu, Bushkill, Pennsylvania

SUPERB,AND I APPRECIATE HIM FOR SHOWING THE COURAGE TO AVOID MRIDANGAM. MANY TALENTED MRIDANGAVIDWANS ARE IN KERALA BUT MANY OF THEM ARE TRYING THEIR LEVEL BEST TO OUTBEAT THE MAIN VOCALIST.AND THE VOCAL CONCERT HAS BECOMING MRIDANGA CONCERT.A TRUE ARTIST WILL NOT DO LIKE THAT. THE GREATNESS OF THE MRIDANGA ARTIST WILL COME OUT WHEN HE IS ACCOMPANYING THE MAIN ARTIST. A CONCERT IS A GROUP WORK . EVERY ARTIST SHOULD CO OPERATE WITH THE OTHER ONE.MANY SPACES ARE THERE TO SHOW THE TALENT OF A MRIDANGA ARTIST.TMK WELL DONE

Although I do not see eye to eye with many eccenntricities of Mr. T.M.Krishna in spite of his great vidwat, I fully appreciate his boycotting Mridangam. Thyagaraja has said 'sogasuga mridangatALamu jathagUrci'. But nowadays most of the mridangam players ( I have purposely not called them vidwAns) insist on keeping the speakers at maximun volume thereby drowning the vocal or violin volume). They do this even in so called chamber music halls. How pleasing this concert is !! Every word and swaram can be heard and enjoyed. All senior musicians should boycott mridangam till the players discipline themselves.

True. It's all a noise fest with mridangam...for years now, only a very handful of people could really handle mridangam properly..all the others are just beating on it with such vengeance I can't even fathom what the instrument had done to them...

I consider Porambokku his masterpiece! Of course there are no words to appreciate the musical excellence. That can only be felt and enjoyed. But his innovative deviations constitute a welcome change in many respects. The language is not exactly Madras Tamil. It is contemporary and perhaps a little colloquial. But the song consists of words widely used everywhere.

Soundara Rajam was rendered in a way that simply defies description. Majestically haunting is the closest I can come to characterising it! The Vilamba Kaala truly brought the character of the Brindavana Saranga to stark clarity.

In the rendition of Soundara Rajam I definitely hear suddha gandharam being used. For example around 1:12:24 it is very clearly audible in the kalpana swaram. Is this a usage of an Anya swara or is it a special version of vrindavana sarang

All art is about social change and creating a field for change and reaction in an audience. Am so happy, great musicians like Krishna are here to take Carnatic further sans caste and privilege. One doesnt need to be a believer to understand or expolate on bhakti. SOme of your comments reek of caste privilege.

A quick doubt. Brindavana Saranga didn't sound like one. Though beautiful beyond anything, I didn't hear Kakali nishadam in it. He even happened to sing sadharana Gandharam, G2 in the swarakalpana. Sounds like Sree. Can anyone clarify?

Dhikshitar's magic... His ragas are totally different from the ragas nowadays which are a mixup of both thyagaraja and dhikshitar. Ragas such as Sahana, in this case brindavana saranga (as also seen in rangapura vihara) Kannada, are very different, to such an extent that dhikshitar's Sahana in termed as a janya of karahapriya or Sri ragam. These are a few examples of the differences of thyagaraja and dhikshitar's schools (bani)...

very strange that when he sings the Poramboke song, the singer Sri T M Krishna is able to empathise with the words but at another moment he proudly states that he never looks at the meaning of a song when it comes to Thyagaraja krithis. Quite Strange...

I think you've misinterpreted his view. His point is that the Poramboke song will be enjoyable to listen to even for a non-Tamil listener. Just like the Telugu krithis are enjoyed by Tamil listeners without understanding much of the lyrics.

Wow! What a terrible thing to say, Sangameswar Iyer! Did you not feel the presence of the trio: Goddess Saraswathi, Narada, and Anjaneya himself, sitting by Sri TMK's side, on the stage, to listen to his singing? This is not "Aahatha" music one hears at almost all the sabhas; this is that rarest of the rare, "Anaahatha" music only Gandharvas and Kinneras are supposed to hear in swarga loka only. Through his devotion to music and saadhana, and Sangeetha upaasana, he has somehow managed to bring the anaahatha, celestial music, down to the aahatha level so that we mortals, not just the devas, devathas, and Kinneras, can hear it. At the level TMK is singing, there is no discrimination between "O Rangasayee and Porombokku"; even if he sang lines from the yellow pages of a telephone directory, Goddess Saraswathi would be pleased immensely. I am telling this as a rasika who has been attending concerts for more than sixty five years, in pursuit of "Ananda", and finally, after a long barren period, I finally experienced it. Yesh Prabhu, Mylapore, Chennai

Hi Raghu Nath, No, TMK is not allergic to the tone of mridangam. When his usual accompanist Sri Arun Prakash is available, he seeks him out, as you can see him at so many of his concerts. I think both Sri Sriramkumar and Arun Prakash were away in USA for the Cleveland Aradhana. There are very few mridangists who can play with sensitivity, and play mridangam gently. Mridangam generates sunaadam only when played gently; when one beats the hell out of mridangam, it generates only noise, and not musical sunaadam. I think the ghatam player here, Sri N Guruprasad, did a fantastic job. When Sri Arun Prakash returns from the USA, you will see him again by TMK's side. Yesh Prabhu, Bushkill, Pennsylvania
